As the old saying goes, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” And neither should we judge movie stars by their ages. At just 21, Elle Fanning made history by becoming the youngest jury (评审团) member at the Cannes Film Festival. This year it lasted from May 14th to May 25th. “I was in complete shock when I got that phone call and that question if I wanted to be a member of the Cannes Jury,” Fanning said during a press conference.

As it turned out, it not only shocked the US actress, but also brought criticism from those who believed Fanning was too young compared to other veterans in the industry. But Fanning’s acting experience was in fact a good argument for her jury membership. In fact, Fanning has been a Hollywood fixture for longer than you realize.

The 21-year-old has been in many big productions. She began acting in I Am Sam at age 2. With lead roles in movies like Super 8, We Bought a Zoo and Maleficent under her belt (取得成功) , she’s appeared in 60 projects and is one of Hollywood’s hottest young stars. Fanning’s devotion to work numbers her among the few former child stars who continue to act as adults.

In her latest movie Teen Spirit, which hit US cinemas last month, Fanning plays a pop singer. Since she had no singing experience, Fanning had to work with Grammy-winning music producer Marius de Vries for three months before the filming started. “I would go to his apartment and sing through all the songs every day,” she said. “He videoed me and recorded me singing everything and made me watch it back again and again to improve my skills.”

With such rich acting experience and devotion to her art, “Fanning certainly was able to represent a new class in film” at the Cannes Film Festival.

文章大意:本文是说明文。文章主要介绍了有机农业的特点和优势。

【推荐1】Organic farming(有机耕作) is a farming method that uses the natural techniques to grow crops and raise farm animals. This approach avoids the use of synthetic(合成的) chemicals, pesticides, and fertilizers, and instead relies on natural methods to promote healthy soil and crop growth.

One of the key benefits of organic farming is its sustainability(可持续性). By avoiding the use of harmful substances, organic farmers are able to reduce their impact on the environment and protect the health of both the soil and local ecosystems. This also means that organic farming has a smaller carbon footprint than traditional farming methods, making it a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly option.

In addition to its environmental benefits, organic farming also has important health benefits. By avoiding the use of pesticides and fertilizers, organic farmers are able to produce crops that are free from harmful chemicals. This can lead to a healthier diet and reduced risk of exposure to harmful substances.

Moreover, organic farming can also have positive economic impacts. By supporting local farmers and promoting sustainable agriculture, organic farming can help to create more jobs and support local communities. Additionally, organic produce (农产品) is often sold at a higher price, which can provide financial benefits for farmers and help to promote sustainable agriculture as a good business model.

However, there are also challenges associated with organic farming. Because organic farming relies on natural methods to control pests and promote growth, it requires more workers and demand more time than traditional farming methods. Additionally, organic farming may not always be as productive or efficient as traditional farming methods, which can make it more difficult for farmers to meet demand.

Despite these challenges, many farmers and consumers are using organic farming as a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly way. As more people become aware of the environmental and health benefits of organic farming, it is likely that demand for organic produce will continue to grow. This, in turn, may help to promote the growth of sustainable agriculture and support the health of both people and the planet.

1. What do we know about organic farming?
A.It makes crops grow better.B.It produce lower quality crops.
C.It uses natural techniques in farming.D.It uses fertilizers to promote healthy soil.
2. How do the farmers reduce footprint through organic farming?
A.By avoiding the use of harmful substances.
B.By using more sustainable synthetic chemicals.
C.By increasing their impact on the environment.
D.By studying both the soil and local ecosystems.
3. Which of the following is the economic benefit brought to farmers by organic farming?
A.Healthier diet to farmers.B.High demand for traditional produce.
C.More job chances in other fields.D.Higher prices for organic produce.
4. What challenge does organic farming face?
A.It is impossible to control pests.
B.It needs more workers and time.
C.The farmland cannot meet farmers’ demand.
D.It has a negative impact on local ecosystems.

2】There’s more evidence that what’s good for your heart is good for your head. A new study shows that people who run, swim or do other moderate intensity (中等强度) exercise have brains that look, on average, 10 years younger than the brains of couch potatoes.

“Our study showed that for older people, getting moderate intensity exercise may be protective, helping them keep their brains work better,” said Dr. Clinton Wright of the University of Miami, who led the study. But it’s not necessarily easy. Walking, golf, bowling and yoga don’t count, and people need to start before they begin showing memory loss, Wright’s team reported in the journal Neurology.

The study of nearly 900 people who exercise regularly showed that 90 percent fell into the low-intensity group. These people are part of a larger group taking part in a bigger study called Northern Manhattan Study. They were asked how long and how often they exercised during the past two weeks. Five years later, they were tested for memory and thinking skills and got a brain MRI (核磁共振). Seven years after that, they took the memory and thinking tests again. The 10 percent who said they took part in moderate intensity exercise scored better on the tests. These included running, climbing, swimming, riding bicycles and so on.

“We found that those with moderate intensity activity had higher scores and slower memory decline (下降) than inactive people when comparing the results,” the study team wrote.

Many studies have shown that exercise may not prevent Alzheimer’s disease but may delay it. The findings fit in with a study that found two years of exercising, eating healthier food and brain training can promote people’s memory function.

A.Moderate intensity exercise keeps your brain younger.
B.Low-intensity group scored higher grades on the tests.
C.Exercise can protect people from getting old and puzzled.
D.Moderate intensity exercise can prevent memory from losing.
3. Which of the following is included in moderate intensity sports?
A.Bowling.B.Reading.C.Walking.D.Swimming.
4. Who might delay memory aging?
A.Those whose family never suffer from any diseases.
B.Those who are good at many higher thinking skills.
C.Those who regular exercise and have a healthy diet.
D.Those who possess a high sense of responsibility.

3】Recently, Australian scientists tried a new tracker on the magpies. They hoped to learn more about how far the birds flew and what they did during a normal day. The scientists are concerned that magpies may have a hard time adjusting as the world warms up because of climate change.

Australian magpies are medium-sized black and white birds. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in. It’s hard to find trackers that work well with small and medium-sized birds. But the newly-produced trackers were light enough and could be recharged without wires while they were still on the birds. To keep the trackers on the birds without causing flying problems, the researchers developed a special harness. It was tough, so it wouldn’t come off by accident. But it had a special release controlled by magnets, which allows the scientists to free the birds from the harnesses at a special magnetic bird feeder, without having to catch the birds again.

The researchers placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. But just ten minutes after setting up the last magpie, they noticed something unusual: An adult female magpie was helping another magpie get free from its harness. In a few hours, most of the other magpies were also freed from their harnesses. By the third day, none of the birds had trackers anymore.

The scientists were disappointed about the trackers, but they realized that the magpies had taught them something else — that magpies are able and willing to help each other out, even if the bird who is helping doesn’t get a reward. This is called “rescue behavior”, and it’s not that common in the animal world, especially among birds. The researchers think this is the first time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies.

The researchers are glad they’ve learned about the rescue behavior of magpies. But now they need to try again to figure out a good way to track these clever birds.

1. Why did researchers attach trackers to magpies?
A.To learn more about magpies’ habits.B.To help them identify magpies clearly.
C.To precisely monitor magpies’flying route.D.To further explain what rescue behavior is.
2. What does the underlined word “harness” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Feather.B.Tracker.C.Belt.D.Recorder.
3. What are Australian magpies like?
A.Friendly but noisy.B.Cute but unhelpful.

4. Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Climate Change Has Affected Magpies Badly
B.Magpies Teach Scientists an Unexpected Lesson
C.Researchers’ Understanding of Rescue Behavior
D.Findings About New Trackers on Australian Magpies
