In Factfulness, Professor Hans Roslingasks raises questions like ‘How many girls finish school?’ and ‘What percentage of the world’s population is poor?’ It turns out that the majority of us get the answers to these questions completely wrong. Why does this happen? Factfulness sets out to explain why, showing that there are several human instincts that distort(扭曲)our perspective. This book focuses on our instinctive biases(偏见), offering practical advice to help us see the good as well as the bad in the world.
Are things getting worse every day? Is progress an impossible goal? In Enlightenment Now, Steven Pinker looks at the big picture of human progress and finds good news. We are living longer, healthier, freer and happier lives. Pinker asks us to stop paying so much attention to negative headlines and news that declares the end of the world. Instead, he shows us some carefully selected data. In 75 surprising graphs, we see that safety, peace, knowledge and health are getting better all over the world. Economic inequality, he claims, is not really a problem, because it is not actually that important for human well-being.
For more than two hundred years those who hold negative thoughts have been winning the public debate. They tell us that things are getting worse. But as a matter of fact, life is getting better. Income, food availability and lifespan are rising; disease, violence and child mortality are falling. Best-selling author Matt Ridley doesn’t only explain how things are getting better; he gives us reasons why as well. He shows us how human culture evolves in a positive direction thanks to the exchange of ideas and specialization. This bold book looks at the entirety of human history-from the Stone Age to the 21st century—and changes the concept that it’s all going downhill.

【推荐1】An argument is an exchange of views between people who do not agree. Some arguments turn into angry quarrels. Suppose, a friend borrowed your car and left it full of fast-food rubbish. What if you dealt with the situation this way:
YOU: Why did you leave all that trash in my car? It's an absolute mess, and I'm tired of you always being so inconsiderate.
FRIEND: Look who's talking. You're such a slob(邋遢鬼), I didn't think you'd notice. How did a minor incident turn into such an unpleasant exchange? You were angry and feeling as though your kindness was being abused. So instead of talking with your friend, you yelled at him. "Why did you" was a challenge. That's why your friend immediately went on the defensive and yelled back.
Now the argument is over. In fact, you don't feel satisfied that you've told him off! During the heat of the moment, he said something that hurt your feelings. And perhaps you didn't really mean what you said.
How can you avoid such situations? Learn to argue in a better way. Try something like this:
YOU: I don't like it when you leave trash in my car. It makes me feel like you don't respect me.
FRIEND: You're right. It was very inconsiderate. I won't do it again.
Before speaking, take a deep breath and get control of your anger. The words you use will let your friend know specifically what is bothering you and most importantly, treat him with respect. So he will respond in the same way.
Also notice that begin the argument with the pronoun "I". An argument beginning with “You did..." is generally a challenge. What usually follows is criticism or an insult. And it goes downhill fast from there.
Using “I” in arguments won't eliminate all disagreements. But it can certainly cut down on the yelling.
1. How may you feel after an unpleasant argument with your friend?A.Angry and hurt. | B.Still wanting to argue. |
C.Satisfied with the yell. | D.Challenged by the argument. |
A.When the weather is hot outside. |
B.When the talk becomes exciting. |
C.When the argument gets emotional. |
D.When your friend is warmer than ever. |
A.You are making me feel bad. |
B.What's the matter with you? |
C.What on earth are you telling me? |
D.It makes me feel bad when hearing that. |
A.Winning arguments with other people. |
B.Making sure that people do what you want |
C.Using the “I” method to communicate better. |
D.Avoiding having disagreement with ftiends. |
This tension between what we feel we can have and "what were seemingly able to have is the niggling suffering, the anxiety we feel. This is where we usually think it's easier to just give up. But we're never meant to let go of the part of us that knows we can have more. The intelligence behind that knowing is us—the real us. It's the part that believes in life and its possibilities. If you drop that, you begin to feel a little "dead" inside because you're dropping "you".
So, if we have this capability but somehow life seems to keep us stuck, how do we break these patterns?
Decide on a new course and make one decision at a time. This is good advice for a new adventure or just getting through today's challenges.
While, deep down, we know we can do it, our mind—or the minds of those close to us—usually says we can't.
That isn't a reason to stop, it's just the mind, that little man or woman on your shoulder, trying to talk you out of something again. It has done it many times before. It's all about starting simple and doing it now.
Decide and act before overthinking. When you do this you may feel a little, or large, release from the jail of your mind and you'll be on your way.
1. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that we should .
A.slow down and live a simple life |
B.be careful when we choose to change |
C.stick to our dreams under any circumstances |
D.be content with what we already have |
A.To focus on every detail. |
B.To decide and take immediate action. |
C.To listen to those close to us. |
D.To think twice before we act. |
A.Escape from your punishment |
B.Realization of your dreams. |
C.Freedom from your tension. |
D.Reduction of your expectations. |
A.It's easier than we think to get what we want. |
B.It's important to learn to accept sufferings in life. |
C.It's impractical to change our way of thinking. |
D.It's harder than we expect to follow a new course. |

Now, 6,000 years on, wild bison are coming back to our soil as part of a major conservation project.
In an effort to protect the European bison, a small group of the endangered animals are to be reintroduced into Kent in the spring of 2022. Conservationists hope the bison will also help decimate spare pine trees to create sunny new open space in the forest and improve insect, bird and plant diversity in the area.
To start with, one male and three females will be introduced, with each female expected to produce one baby per year through natural breeding. The bison to be released in the UK will likely come from the Netherlands or Poland, where similar reintroduction programs have been achieved.
These animals have a huge size, weighing up to a ton each. They are expected to kill off trees in former pine plantations by eating or rubbing against bark(树皮). The dead wood should provide food for insects, which will in turn provide food for birds including nightingales and turtle doves. Scientists who are part of this project believe that the reintroduction of bison will pose no threats to people living nearby since these bison have a peaceful nature and will not harm others.
Paul Hadaway, from Kent wildlife Trust, said, “Using missing keystone species like bison to restore natural processes to the home of animals and plants is the key to creating bio-abundance on our land.” Once the bison are settled in their 500-hectare land, the public will be able to pay a visit and observe the animals from viewing platforms. And as they grow year by year, some may be moved to similar locations across the UK.

The portable washing machine was invented by Ash Newland in 2010, while planning to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Struck by the limited packing space, he got inspiration from traditional washboards to create a bag that could be used to clean clothes. Then he gave up his career as a lawyer and focused on perfecting the bag’s design. By 2012, the bag was ready for the public. It weighed only 180 grams and required very little storage space, making it perfect for anyone wishing to travel light.
Not surprisingly, the bag worth 55 dollars was an instant hit with travelers, university students and even passengers. However, Newland was not satisfied. He still saw a disadvantage with his invention – dirty clothes had to be carried around in a separate bag! The recently introduced Scrubba Wash Pack solves that problem.
In order to make the pack active, dirty clothes are placed inside the bag along with two to three liters of water. The bag is then shut tightly to ensure all air is squeezed out and the clothes are massaged (揉搓) for a few minutes. After a quick wash, they are clean and ready to be dried. According to Newland, the pack can clean anything from jeans to smelly socks! What’s even
more amazing is that with a capacity to hold 13 liters of water, it can be used to wash more clothes at a time.
The best part is that the 99-dollar pack that will be available for sale later this year, only weighs 300 grams and is completely foldable, making it easy to store when it’s not in use. With the Scrubba Wash Pack, wandering through foreign cities searching for a washing shop, or paying for washing machines may soon be a thing of the past!
1. What aroused Ash Newland’s desire to create the Scrubba Wash Bag?A.Travelers’ requirements. | B.His own experience. |
C.His dream of invention. | D.A traditional washboard. |
A.The bag was not convenient enough. |
B.The bag was not popular with travelers. |
C.The bag couldn’t wash more clothes at a time. |

C.Figured. | D.Run. |

My co-worker and I asked what the problem was and if we could help, but he said he wouldn’t want to tell any details. He just felt like going into bed, pulling the sheet up over his head, and staying there for a few years, and I knew exactly how he felt.
Before he left, I handed him a bag along with his iced coffee. He looked at me questioningly because he hadn't ordered anything but the coffee. He opened the bag and saw that I had given him his favorite type of doughnut (油炸圈饼).
“It's on me,”I told him.”Have a nice day.”
He smiled and thanked me before turning around and heading back out into the rain.
The next evening, when I was in the middle of making coffee, Hank drove up to the window. But instead of ordering anything, he handed me a single pink rose and a little note. I waited until I saw his Jeep leave the parking lot, then I ran to the back of the shop and read the note. It read:
