Building a five-star hotel in the middle of a valuable wilderness(荒野) without damaging(破坏) the environment might not be easy, but it is far from impossible. The King Pacific Lodge in British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest shows that if enough care and attention is taken, the task is possible.

Unlike many other hotel building plans, no trees were cut down and no land was wasted to build it. The Lodge does not have the same location(位置) but sits on a floating boat pulled into the sea bay in May, till September. Those wishing to stay in one of its seventeen rooms must access it by boat or seaplane. Each guest staying at the Lodge is charged 3% tax(税) on the protection of the natural resources, but is given the chance to see whales and bears. And since these are the main attractions of the area and of the Lodge, the management knows well that in order to stay in business they must make the area untouched.

In 2000, the Lodge management signed an agreement with the native(本土的) Gitga'at people. Together they work for the benefit of the area. The Lodge knows that the native tribe (部落)is the owners of the land, so it pays the tribe for the use of their land and even supports the native youth and employs the tribe's people. They, in turn, teach the newcomers about the local culture.

The King Pacific Lodge is one of a growing number of tourism companies that manage to minimize their environmental damage to win the approval(批准)of the local government where they set up their business. These companies pay more attention to environmental protection and are careful to use natural resources and protect endangered animals. Realizing how destructive tourism can be, they want to avoid the love-it-to-death effect of tourism.

1. From the passage, we know that the King Pacific Lodge______________.
A.follows other hotels’ building plans.
B.is less popular among tourists.
C.is far away from an important wilderness.
D.has been created after careful consideration.
2. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.The King Pacific Lodge is in an area without any trees.
B.The King Pacific Lodge can be moved from place to place.
C.Guests in the King Pacific Lodge can take part in programs about the protection of nature.
D.Guests in the King Pacific Lodge have to pay extra money for the boat to get there.
3. According to paragraph 3, we learn that some of the native people ____________.
A.want to learn the newcomers' culture.
B.are not willing to sell their land.
C.are employed by local government to work for the Lodge.
D.may have the chance to work at the Lodge.
4. According to the passage, the tourist industry__________.
A.will always do harm to the environment.
B.cares little about the importance of environmentally friendly tourism.
C.can do less damage to the environment.
D.always has a disagreement with the local government.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了一个名为“Feel the Peel”的机器,不仅可以制作新鲜压榨的橙汁,还可以用剩余的橙子皮3D打印出可回收的生物塑料杯子

【推荐1】There is hope for our planet’s survival. Innovative products are being designed to reduce our dependence on plastic, single-use plastic in particular.

One such innovation comes from international design firm Carlo Ratti Associati with its “Feel the Peel” machine, an experimental rounded juice bar that not only makes freshly squeezed orange juice, but also 3D prints a recyclable bioplastic cup with the leftover orange peels.

Designed with global energy company Eni, the juicer is 10 feet tall and topped with a massive dome (圆顶), feeding the juicer with oranges on demand. The dome is made up of round tracks that hold up to 1, 500 oranges. A 3D printer is set up in the base of the machine.

The machine goes like magic. When an order is placed, the oranges slide down the tracks to a squeezer, and the juice is then deposited into an “orange peel (果皮)” bio-plastic cup, ready to enjoy. Meanwhile, the freshly squeezed peels fall down a tube and gather at the bottom of the machine where they are dried, milled (碾磨) and mixed with Polylactic Acid, creating a bioplastic material. The bioplastic is then heated and melted into a filament (丝状物) and the 3D printer then creates recyclable bioplastic cups, ready to be filled with freshly squeezed juice.

How cool that is! It seems that Carlo Ratti Associati and Eni have plans to take “Feel the Peel’ beyond just orange juice.

“The principle of recycling is a must for today’s objects,” says Carlo Ratti, “Working with Eni, we tried to show recycling in a very tangible (有形的) way, by developing a machine that helps us to understand how oranges can be used well beyond their juice. The next improvement of “Feel the Peel” might include new functions, such as printing fabric for clothing from orange peels.”

1. What is the aim of creating the “Feel the Peel” machine?
A.To make orange juice taste better.B.To produce single use plastic cups.
C.To increase the output of orange juice.D.To take something beyond just orange juice.
2. What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?
A.How the new juicer works.B.What the two companies share.
C.Where the new tool comes from.D.Why the machine is popular.
3. We can infer from what Carlo Ratti said that __________.
A.recycling can be shown in a very popular way
B.their new machine still has some potential
C.his company is very interested in Eni’s design
D.a product can help us understand our world
4. What can be the best title for the text?
A.Orange Peels Are Turned Into Treasure
B.Innovative Products Are Being Designed
C.Orange Juicer 3D Prints Bioplastic Cups
D.Carlo Invents A Recyclable Machine

【推荐2】The Maldives faces the threat of extinction from rising sea levels, but the government said on Thursday it was looking to the future with plans to build homes and a golf course that can float.

An increase in sea levels of just 18 to 59 centimeters would make the Maldives --- a nation of a number of tiny coral islands in the Indian Ocean --- not suitable for humans to live in by 2100, the UN’s climate change experts have warned.

President Mohamed Nasheed has declared a fight for survival, and last month he signed a deal with a Dutch company to study suggestions for a floating structure that could support a conference centre, homes and an 18-hole golf course.

The company, Dutch Docklands, is currently building floating developments in the Netherlands and Dubai. Its website said it undertook projects that make “land from water by providing large-scale floating constructions to create similar conditions as on land”.

The Maldives began to work on an artificial island known as the Hulhumale near the crowded capital island of Male in 1997 and more than 30,000 people have been settled there in order to ease crowdedness. The city, which has a population of 100,000, is already protected from rising sea levels by a 30-million-dollar sea wall, and the government is considering increasingly imaginative ways to fight climate change.

Nasheed, who held the world’s first underwater cabinet (内阁) meeting in October to highlight his people’s serious and difficult situation, has even spoken of buying land elsewhere in the world to enable Maldivians to relocate if their homes are completely covered.

He has also promised to turn his nation into a model for the rest of the world by becoming “carbon neutral (碳中和)” by 2020. His plan involves ending fossil fuel use and powering all vehicles and buildings from “green” sources such as burning coconut husks.

1. According to the passage, the Maldives is a country ________.
A.that is made up of many small islands
B.which has been covered by water now
C.where people live in underwater houses
D.whose people live in their floating homes
2. Mohamed Nasheed chose Dutch Docklands for his plan probably because it ________.
A.has a good fame throughout the world
B.charged much less than other companies
C.has experience in building floating structures
D.supports building floating structures in the world
3. The Hulhumale was built for the purpose of ________.
A.attracting more visitorsB.making it a new capital
C.fighting against climate changeD.making the capital less crowded
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A.To promote the idea of low-carbon living style.
B.To tell people that the Maldives is disappearing soon.
C.To discuss the causes why the Maldives faces extinction.
D.To introduce the efforts taken by Maldivians to fight for life.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。威尔士家具制造商Andy Dix使用英国种植的白蜡树制造自行车,这将减少环境污染,对环境保护有非常重要的意义。

【推荐3】Bicycle riding has taken the world by storm. Bicycles are typically made of steel or aluminum but now there is a unique company that is growing bikes on trees, literally. These bicycles are made of British grown ash trees by Welsh maker Andy Dix. His Hay-on-Wye company, Twmpa Frames, is making bikes that are of high performance and environmentally sustainable.

Going from furniture to bicycles came about after a conversation with author Rob Penn. Penn was looking for craftsmen to make things from an ash tree that fell for his book: The Man Who Made Things Out of Trees.

“We talked about what I might build, and I suggested a bike,” said Dix. “It seemed like a good fit, but actually I had no experience in bike building, and Rob had a publishing deadline. In the end, I built him a writing desk instead.” But the idea interested Dix, who decided that he had to make it happen just to see if he could.

It took two years to build the prototype (雏形) that was made from ash wood. Dix tested the wooden bike on the roughest roads he could find and discovered that it was comfortable, durable, and excellent at absorbing shakes. He put more than 3, 000 miles on the bike. Dix explained, “I was running along battered roads that would have shaken me to bits on a aluminum bike. The penny dropped. Not only could I make a bike out of wood, but it had inherent advantages over other materials.”

Though cutting down trees can add to more carbon in the atmosphere, sustainable tree farming is possible. Dix said that manufacturing a British tonne of aluminum results in carbon emissions of 4, 532 kg while producing a tonne of wood only emits 457 kg. Currently, the cost of a new Twmpa Cycle is out-of-reach for many bicycle riders; but the idea of using sustainable materials like ash trees could start a new cycling revolution that puts the environment first. Helping the environment could be just a pedal away.

1. Why is Rob Penn mentioned?
A.To tell us he was a great author.B.To praise him for his contribution.
C.To explain why Dix made the bikes.D.To promote his new book to readers.
2. What does the underlined part “The penny dropped” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.The truth came out.B.Money was missing.
C.The bike broke down.D.The efforts were in vain.
3. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Logging trees is a wrong practice.
B.Developing sustainable forestry is a must.
C.Carbon emission calls for urgent attention.
D.The wooden bike does more good than harm.
4. Which of the following is a suitable title of the text?
A.Less Carbon, More SustainableB.Amazing? Bikes Grow on Trees
C.No Innovation, No DevelopmentD.Amusing? Bike Riding Is Taking off
