Chen Yongheng has taken about 5,000 photos of Xiang Liping, who he first met when she was 13 in December 2002. She appeared on a hillside as he was coming down the mountain, followed by two other children, carrying large bundles(捆) of straw on their backs. Intrigued by the sight, Chen raised his camera to take a picture of the three — but it was then that he noticed the sleeves of the girl in red blowing in the wind. He approached and touched the girl's sleeves, only to discover there were no arms inside.
After returning home and reviewing his photographs, Chen decided he had to find the girl again. Chen finally found the girl one year later. He learned that she touched an exposed electrical wire when she was only 4 and had to have both her arms amputated. It was then that an idea occurred to him — hand in his pictures of Xiang to the World Press Photo Contest, which offers a 10,000 euro ($11,080) top prize. From 2003 to 2013, Chen visited the family and took photos of Xiang every year. He entered the contest every year, but every time he failed to win the top prize. That was until December last year, when his pictures caught the attention of journalists at a photo exhibition. After the photos were published online in June, 2016, they were viewed more than 100 million times and attracted more than 80,000 comments. With the support of the China Social Assistance Foundation, more than 300,000 yuan was donated to Xiang. "She now has more confidence and told me over phone that she wants to open an online store," Chen said.

7-year-old Kelli is the Long Island granddaughter of a New York (NY) transit worker who inspired her drawing. She wanted to show him appreciation for helping people go to work on the transit system, and her mixed-media“thank you” has gone from hanging on her front door to hanging in Times Square.
While NY has been in the beginning stages of reopening, the people there continue to rely on mass transit during the pandemic. Shutterfly chose two of the city’s busiest commuter centers to show uplifting messages of thanks, to bring a little joy to their commutes. Kelli and her family didn’t expect that her artwork would have shown up by Shutterfly for the first time at 8th Avenue and 42nd Street.
Xavier, aged 5, also from the Long Island, wanted to thank frontline workers for being there for those who are sick and in need, especially his aunt who is a nurse’s assistant at Mount Sinai Hospital. “I made this picture to thank the doctors and nurses for being superheroes,” said Xavier.
A Brooklyn 4-year-old named Amarry wanted to share “a heart and a helping hand” to show her appreciation for healthcare workers everywhere, including his mom, who is a physician assistant.

These are just three of the more than 80,000 Little Free Libraries in more than 90 countries. Unlike traditional libraries, these small structures aren't buildings where people check out books from a librarian.
“A Little Free Library is a box full of books from which, when you find one, you can take a book home with you,” explains Margret Aldrich, Little Free Library spokes-woman. “Or if you have a book to share, you can leave it for someone else to read.”
Little Free Libraries are everywhere: outside homes or beside coffee shops.
The first was set on a post in front of Todd Bol’s home in Hudson, Wisconsin, United States. The little schoolhouse Bol built held free books anyone could enjoy.
It became a local hit.
A year after setting up his library, Bol and Rick Brooks, a friend and business partner, launched Little Free Library as a nonprofit organization in 2012. Their goal was to make books more widely available while building connections within communities.
They inspired a book-sharing revolution.
Little Free Libraries began to spread all over the place-from Salvador, Brazil, to Grand Marais, Minnesota, United States.
Today, those who want to build one can get free instructions from the Little Free Library website.
“There weren't many public places like libraries where I live” says 10-year-old Umayr Ansari, who put a Little Free Library outside his home in Doha, Qatar. “I had a lot of extra books, and I wanted to share them so people who didn't have their own books could have a chance to read.”

Fortunately, a group of engineering students succeeded in developing a massive new vacuum cleaner that can collect microplastics without removing any of the sand from the beach. The 12 Canadian students from the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec built their Hoola One plastic vacuum cleaner as a class project.
"We did some research and we realized there was no machine around the world to do this kind of job," Hoola One co-founder Sam Duval told Hawaii Public Radio. "So we told each other, 'We will invent it,' and we did it."
As a means of testing their machine's efficiency, they recently used it on the sands of Hawaii's Kamilo Beach, which is also notorious for being one of the dirtiest beaches in the world. Though their first prototype(原型)experienced a number of technical issues, the students managed to fix the problems and tidy up the beach.
Using a handheld tube, the machine sucks(吸入)up plastic and sand and dumps them all into a massive tank of water. Since rocks and sand are heavier than plastic, they sink to the bottom of the tank so they can be dumped back onto the beach. The plastic, on the other hand, floats to the top of the tank.
According to Hawaii Public Radio, the team left the Hoola One vacuum on the island as a donation to the state department- They are now researching the ecological effects of the vacuum on the beach while they search for funding and sponsorships(赞助)to produce more Hoola One vacuums.

The piece was bought by their grandfather for £5 from an antique dealer in Edinburgh in 1964. It is estimated that it could now sell for £ 1 million at auction(拍卖). It is one of five missing pieces from the Lewis Chessmen, a set of medieval chess pieces that were found in a sand hill on the Isle of Lewis, off Scotland’s west coast, in 1831.
The piece is 8.8 centimeters tall and made from walrus ivory, a rare material in those days. It is warder, which is a prison guard, with a helmet, shield and sword. This piece would be the same as a rook(车), or castle in a modern chess set.
The family, who don’t want to make their name public, explained how their grandfather was unaware of the piece’s importance when he bought it in 1964. After he died, it was looked after by his daughter, who believed that it had magical qualities. They finally realized how important the piece was when it was examined by Alexander Kader, an expert at Sotheby’s auction house in London.
The Lewis Chessmen are famous all over the world. The set is split between the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, and the British Museum in London, attracting lots of visitors. They are thought to have been made in Trondheim, Norway, between AD 1150 and 1200, and were probably buried on Lewis for safekeeping on their way to being sold in Ireland. Nobody really knows for sure why they were buried there or how they were discovered.
The piece will go on display in Edinburgh and then London before its auction on 2 July. It is expected to either be bought by, or loaned to, a museum. Kader says there are still four missing pieces out there, “However, it might take another 150 years for one to show up.”
