Leaders in the aviation (航空) industry plan to launch a campaign (发起运动) that they hope will work against what they call a “Flight Shaming Movement” (FSM). They say FSM has weakened people’s demand for air travel in Europe. Some travelers there are increasingly concerned about the effects of flying on the environment. Activists have been calling for greater action against climate change. That includes avoiding air travel.
FSM has affected air travel demand in many European countries, including Britain, France and Germany. The campaign will try to explain to the public how the industry is reducing its effect on the environment. Juniac, head of IATA, said FSM gave off “misleading information”.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) is organizing the plan through the Air Transport Action Group, a group of aviation industry organizations and companies. Juniac didn’t say when the campaign would start, but noted that details would be available to airports and airlines.
Commercial flying is estimated to cause about 2.5% of worldwide carbon emissions (释放). However, that number could rise as worldwide air travel increases.
The aviation industry says it has already cut carbon emissions by one-half since 1990. The improvements are mainly the result of aircraft that use fuel more effectively. The industry plans to cut emissions further by 2050. It has a goal of stopping the growth of carbon emissions by 2020.
Airlines also have warned of the harmful effects of FSM. Some have criticized the industry for failing to explain itself. Tim Clark, president of the Airline Emirates, said that improvements in technology have reduced the environmental effects of passenger airplanes.

Automobiles have become increasingly dependent on processors, also known as chips. They are needed for computers to help engines with better fuel economy and assist drivers in emergency braking. Without a good supply of chips, carmakers have centered production on higher-profit models. The higher prices keep their businesses going even though they are selling fewer cars.
Richard Palmer is the chief financial officer of Stellantis. The company sells cars, under 14 brands including Fiat, Chrysler and Peugeot. He said the company did not expect chip supply to improve before the last three months of the year. That would mean a production loss of around 1.4 million vehicles for 2021.
The German carmaker warned that there will be more problems during the second half of this year. "The longer the supply bottlenecks last, the more tense the situation is likely to become," BMW chief financial officer Nicolas Peter said in a statement. “We expect production restrictions to continue in the second half of the year. Those restrictions will cause a lower number of sales,” he added.
German chipmaker Infineon Technologies confirmed the shortage. The company said the latest wave of COVID-19 cases slows the production of materials in Asia. And the amounts of goods available have now hit all-time lows. Reinhard Ploss is the Chief Executive Officer of Infineon. He told economists that a sharp limit of supplies is hurting the recovery of worldwide car markets. He observed that "it will take time to get back" to a balance between supply and demand. "In our view, this will take until well into 2022," he added.
1. How do carmakers deal with reduced sales?A.By improving production technology. | B.By selling cars with lower fuel consumption. |
C.By offering better emergency braking systems. | D.By producing high-priced cars. |

It is reported that the bridge is 4. 13 kilometers long, with 12 lanes in both directions on the main I bridge. It is a long-span suspension bridge with the largest volume in the world, China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group said. The bridge connects the Hanyang and Wuchang and its opening will ameliorate the urban expressway system, relieve traffic pressure across the river, and drive development in the area, according to the company.
On both sides of the upper deck of the bridge, there is a two-meter-wide footpath, with eight rest and sightseeing areas, where people can enjoy the river scenery. The lower level is designed with two non-motorized lanes, each 2. 5 meters wide. A 1. 5-meter wide walkway is also a feature of each side of the floor so pedestrians (行人) can walk on the lower level without getting caught in the rain.
Chief designer of the bridge, Xu Gongyi, said, “Considering navigation and traffic volume, the main span of the bridge is 1, 700 meters, which is the second-largest in the world and also the largest in bridges of double-deck structure.”

The goal of the event was to discover new apps that could help improve the driving experience in new connected cars. And the winning apps were chosen for their ability to ensure the driving experience in a safe manner.
City driving means stopping every quarter of a mile at red lights. People tend to drive faster to “make” the next light, a practice that doesn't always work and which can endanger other drivers and pedestrians. Israeli developers Shlomo Shenzitz and Rafael Vianeti say their Green Wave app will tell drivers the suitable speed they need in order not to stop at a red light again.
To determine the right speed, the app would draw information from both the city and from its database of users, once enough people have started to use it. When a car is moving at a speed that guarantees it won't have to stop at a red light, a green wave will appear. When a red wave is shown, the driver needs to adjust their speed.
The “green” in Green Wave may stand as much for the environment as it does for “go”. Stopping at red lights is annoying for drivers and even worse for the environment. Researchers found that carbon emissions(排放)were four times higher when a car was moving away from a red light, compared to when it drove through the green light.
What it comes down to is the old saying --- slow and steady wins the race. You can either hurry up and wait, or slow down and never stop at another red light. Green Wave might not get you to your destination any faster, but it might increase road safety and reduce stress on drivers and the environment.
1. How can Green Wave help drivers?A.By guiding a clear way. | B.By warning away pedestrians. |
C.By missing the red traffic lights. | D.By improving the driving speed. |
A.He is green with envy. | B.Try to adopt a green lifestyle. |
C.The new workers are still very green. | D.Frightened, many passengers looked green. |
A.To reduce traffic accidents. | B.To guarantee an average speed. |
C.To stop drivers from falling asleep. | D.To remind drivers of road conditions. |
A.Drive at a Faster Speed | B.Improve Your Driving Skills |
C.Never be More Comfortable in a Car | D.Never Get Delayed by Traffic Lights Again |

The animal’s health had been in a bad state for the past month and recently worsened so much that he could no longer stand, so his treatment team decided to euthanize (使安乐死) him.
Born in Shambe, South Sudan, the rhino was captured two years after living in the wild and brought to the Dvur Królovė Zoo in the Czech Republic. He was moved to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy 34 years later.
This very special animal was beloved by many worldwide—and his death is a terrible warning of humanity’s threat to animals. Hunters in the 20th century wiped out most of this white rhino subspecies population, mainly for their horns, which were used in traditional Chinese health treatments. More than 2,000 of the animals lived in the wild in the 1960s, but their numbers had dropped to a couple of dozen by the end of the century. The only remaining northern white rhinos today are two captive (关在笼子里的) females—Sudan’s daughter Najin and granddaughter, Fatu. Neither is able to give birth naturally.
Now researchers are hoping to keep this kind of animal alive by artificially fertilizing Najin and Fatu’s eggs with sperm (精子) frozen from male northern white rhinos and then implanting the fertilized eggs into a female southern white rhino—a subspecies that was also threatened but has since grown quickly because of conservation efforts. Last year, as part of a campaign to raise money for such fertilization attempts, which experts say could cost as much as US $9 million, Sudan acquired a Tinder social medial account where people can donate money by swiping right on their phone screen. As of late Tuesday, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy had yet to update its website, which still read, “Visit the last three northern white rhinos”—a ticking alarm clock to which some humans are desperately trying to add time.

Crowds of Parisians and tourists strolled along the Champs-Elysees avenue on Sunday as a car-free day removed most of the traffic from the French capitals usually busy streets. Pedestrians wandering along the most famous street in Paris could view the Arc de Triomphe in its temporary appearance as an ait installation. The monument has been covered in silvery wrapping, as designed by the late artist Christo.
In 2015, Paris authorities organized its first car-free day in a central zone: Paris without car, expanding the initiative in 2017 to other districts within the city limits. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo has sought to use the annual event to curb vehicle use and reduce air pollution.
This new and 7th edition, renamed “Joumee Paris Respire" or “Paris Breathes Day” , takes place on Sunday September 19, 2021!
For 7 hours, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. cars are banned from Paris ( excluding rings) , letting bicycles, rollerblades, skateboards, and pedestrians along with public transit users enjoy the city. The persons who are against the regulation might be fined €135. But emergency vehicles, ambulances, buses, cabs and private hire are authorized to drive at 30km/h ( 18. 64 mph) in the Paris Respire areas.
With this action, Paris will take the time to live without the unstopping noise of cars and to show the impacts of the traffic. According to AirParif controling the air quality, the rates of nitrogen dioxide are decreasing on these Car-free days, in comparison with the other Sundays over the year. About 7% less pollutant concentration in the air in Paris are noticed.
Rest assured, there are exemptions (豁免)if you need to go to the hospital in Paris or if you are back from a weekend getaway, but you will have to prove your credentials (证明书)and a proof of address, and respect a limit of 30km/h.
Discovering a car-free Paris, enjoying calm streets and walking the usually-car-blocked streets promises some nice moments, right?

Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills or are burned with other waste products.
A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy's, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin is the company's co-founder. He explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women's feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device that makes soft fibers. Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The knitted stuff and the inner part of the shoe are then attached to the shoe's outer part, called the sole. This outer sole is also made from environmentally friendly material: responsibly sourced no-carbon rubber.
Rothy's shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with either a rounded or pointed toe. They come in different colors and designs. They cost either $ 125 or $ 145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We're not going to run out of water bottles any time soon. So we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.
For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international shipping in the near future.

Although we know what they are suffering, being far away makes it harder to help and comfort loved ones. There is no use worrying a lot about them. Instead, keeping a positive attitude of support is more helpful than getting into worrying about the person. I think it is what I can do to help my loved ones.
My daughter has been working full-time during summer about 10 hours a day. She has to study hard for a big entrance exam. At first, like most people, I wanted to try to solve the problems and try to explain the situation. Was there a better way of time management? Was there a better way of studying for this test? However, that was not always helpful. Sometimes, it even gave more pressure to her. Sometimes it might sound like there was something wrong to improve However, it was just tiring at the end of the day. What would be the kind thing to do in this situation? It was hard to read someone’s mind. I decided to just chat with her online and to send a hug emoji (表情符号) this time. It seemed more suitable than talking about solutions. Giving space can also be an act of help, comfort and kindness
It is fun and meaningful experiment to actively think about kind things to do rather than let it happen naturally. I’ve realized it and I’m grateful for this chance to share online. Give it a try too and you’ll enjoy sweetness.

However, by doing our best to avoid being criticized, we allow ourselves to travel on a never-ending highway of mediocrity (平康). Without receiving negative feedback (反馈) and criticisms from others, our growth stopped and our opportunities disappeared. Launched in 210, the Microsoft KIN smartphone only lasted on the market for 48 days despite its $ 1 billion development and marketing costs. It was only after the phone went on sale that it became quite obvious that most 15 to 30-year-olds preferred Androids, BlackBerrys and iphones to the Microsoft KIN. If criticism and feedback had been received by the developing group while the phone was in development, Microsoft could have avoided the huge embarrassment and financial loss that occurred.
Just to be clear, I’m talking about constructive criticism. Feedback that helps to make you stronger. If you always think you’re right but don’t get feedback from anyone else, how do you know for sure that what you’re doing is any good? Listening and acting on honest views will tell you exactly what you’re doing well-and what you can do better. This type of feedback forces you to evaluate your actions and the way you work. If you use constructive criticism wisely, it can guide you away from bad practices and move you towards good ones.
The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism. Fortunately, you now have the keys to help you move away from seeking praise—to instead, seeking constructive criticism. And once you start putting these keys to use, you’ll unlock the doors to a whole new way of learning, developing and succeeding.

This lifestyle results in traffic jams on our roads and does big damage to the environment. As autonomous vehicles(自动驾驶车辆)begin to hit the streets over the next ten years or so, it is believed that all this will change.
This future is not ensured, however. To realize the full possible benefits of driverless cars, we will have to act soon to encourage a culture in which transportation is shared. Consider what would happen if most people own their own driverless car, the same trouble we will suffer if they insist on riding alone.
It is well-known that autonomous vehicles will most likely reduce the number and seriousness of crashes, and reduce traffic jams and increase capacity. Nobody knows whether these positive effects would overcome the negative effects of private ownership, but we wouldn’t bet on it.
Many people think that driverless vehicles will surely be shared, but there is little evidence. Vehicle providers have no reason to encourage shared usage of vehicles. It is suggested that driverless cars will be only a little more expensive than traditional cars, which means they’ll be within reach of many consumers, so users have little reason to ask for services that provide shared rides.
If most people are going to buy-in to a shared-ride culture, they need to get a clear benefit. Saving a few dollars off the fare isn’t likely to encourage the movement. A better benefit would be knowing that you’re going to reach your destination more quickly.
The way to make quick passage possible is to redesign our roads to give priority(优先)to collective transportation modes like building priority lanes(车道)for ride-sharing autonomous vehicle. Autonomous vehicles carrying many people should get higher priority than those carrying one or none at all.
Decision-makers at the local and state levels must encourage the most efficient use of our limited roadway. The autonomous future is rapidly coming; it is critical that we act now, while the impacts of autonomous vehicles are still largely within our control.

Take vertical (垂直的)farms, for example. Farming is moving indoors where the growth of plants can be monitored and controlled. The facilities are built vertically, so growing areas can be put in piles. This greatly reduces the amount of land needed for farming.
From an IOT point of view, vertical farms are connected in two ways. First, small sensors (传 感器)in the soil or connected to plants tell a control system exactly how much light, water, and nutrients are needed to grow the healthiest crops. Sensors will also tell vertical fanners when crops are nearing their peak for harvesting at just the right time to make sure it's still fresh when it reaches its final destination.
Second , vertical farms will be connected to other networks and information systems, including databases that track local demand. For example local restaurants may input when they need fresh food supplies. And vertical farmers could get that information so they know which crops to grow in what quantities. This type of IOT system would have been unimaginable a generation ago.
Today, vertical farms are being experimented. Yet, the numbers point to a bright future for the industry especially as the world's population continues to grow. For example, Green Sense Farms in Chicago is able to harvest crops 26 times a year using 85 percent less energy, one-tenth the water, and no pesticides. A side benefit of lower energy use is lower C02 output of two tons per month, with the added benefit of creating 46 pounds of oxygen every day.

A new study suggests that some homemade soups — made of chicken, beef or vegetables — might help fight malaria.
Jake Baum of the Imperial College London led the research. He asked children at a London school to bring in homemade clear soups that their families would make to treat a fever. The children were from many different cultural backgrounds.
The soups were then exposed to the parasite (寄生虫) that creates 99.7 percent of malaria cases in Africa, the World Health Organization, WHO, explained.
Of the 56 soups tested, five were more than 50 percent effective in containing the growth of the parasite. Two were as effective as one drug now used to treat malaria. And four soups were more than 50 percent effective at preventing parasites from aging to the point that they could infect mosquitoes that spread the disease. Baum also noted that it was unclear which foods made the soups effective against malaria.
The soups came from families from different ethnic histories, including Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They had several main ingredients, including chicken, beef and green vegetables. Baum said the vegetarian soups showed similar results to the soups with meat.
Baum said his aim was in part to show children that scientific research can turn a herbal cure into a man-made medicine. He noted the research of Dr. Tu Youyou of China. In the 1970s, she found that the herb quinhao was an effective antimalarial treatment. The herb has been used in Eastern medicine for two thousand years. Tu’s research led to the man-made drug artemisinin (青蒿素), a drug now widely used to treat malaria. She won the Nobel Prize in 2015.
More and more people are becoming resistant to the drugs that treat the disease, which kills about 400,000 people a year. That means scientists will have to “look beyond chemistry” and find new drugs, Baum adds.

In addition to playing for the public, Maltsby also hosts a radio show on WRXB called “Blind Boy Radio”. While on air, the musician gives away groceries, cash and other goods to grateful callers. To date, Maltsby has donated $2,000, but his funds are running low—even with help from sponsors. That’s why he’s turning to the community for help.
Maltsby has set up a GoFundMe campaign in the hope of collecting $25,000 to aid struggling people in the community.
While Maltsby’s benevolent (慈善的) spirit is inspiring, it’s often the people with little to spare who demonstrate how easy it is to part with money.
