【推荐3】During the golden age of detective fiction in the early 20th century, four writers influenced the genre (体裁) most: Margery Allingham, Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers and the “Queen of Crime”, Agatha Christie. Another novelist of this era was Josephine Tey, ranked as “number Five to the Big Four”, whose detective books are all thick with mystery and show a great mind at work.
The Franchise Affair
It was published in 1948 and adapted into a film three years later, which begins with a missing teenager. When she turns up again, distressed (痛苦的) and exhausted, she explains how she got away from a mother and daughter who locked her up and tried to make a servant of her. The girl’s version of events ruins their reputations, which then begins to fall apart.
To Love and Be Wise
It centers around another disappearance. Leslie Searle, a Hollywood photographer, disappears from an English village that is home to many writers and artists. Grant, a detective of Scotland Yard, arrives to determine whether a crime has been committed.
The Daughter of Time
As Tey’s masterpiece, the book was once voted the greatest crime novel ever written by the Crime Writers Association. This time, Grant is out of action, recovering from a broken leg. To relieve his boredom, he turns his attention to a very cold case, concerning Richard III. Did Richard III really murder his two nephews in the Tower of London?
Richard of Bordeaux
MacKintosh also established her literary status by her first play, Richard of Bordeaux, under the name Gordon Daviot. However, it is as Tey, and for her detective novels, that she is remembered today. Her books are still of great value to contemporary literature because of their keen psychological insight into the complexity of human nature.

【推荐1】Plastic, a durable material, is probably the definitive 20th century “mod-con”. It has proved attractive to consumers and manufacturers. But the tide, now packed with an additional 8 million tons of plastic entering the oceans annually, is slowly turning.
The scale of the environmental problem with plastic waste is astonishing More than 6.3 billion tons of plastic waste has been produced since the 1950s, more than half of which was produced in the past 16 years, and plastic production is expected to double again in the next 20 years. Despite higher recycling rates, large amounts of plastic leak into the environment. Estimates suggest there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050 and there is evidence that it is present throughout the human food chain. An ecologically and technologically superior replacement for many uses of plastic is long overdue.
Consumers have become keen recyclers. Yet this is not as good an outcome as it seems. Even when plastics are recyclable and put in a recycling bin, the majority still ends up in landfill, causing huge emission problems, or ends up in the sea.
Recycling is a complex, expensive, low-profit business. It is made harder because, although 95 per cent of people in the US and EU markets recycle, only about 30 per cent recycle carefully enough for it to be usable.
Nevertheless, growing demand for alternatives to plastic is running ahead of the scientific breakthroughs. These are needed to ensure the environmental impact of replacing it is a net positive. One popular proposal—using paper instead of plastic if possible—however could exacerbates global warming, a more pressing problem.
Having turned consumers into keen recyclers, governments must ensure recycling work. This will require an internationally joined-up regulatory, environment that ensures manufacturers bear the cost of using non-recyclable or uneconomical materials.
Equally, consumers should continue to demand a circular plastic economy. This would be a world in which unnecessary and eco-unfriendly plastic is completely removed, all plastic packaging is 100 per cent reusable or recyclable. The waste must end.

The child went missing on January 22 while playing with friends at his grandfather's house in the southern state of North Carolina. When the other children returned to the house and Casey did not, the family searched the area for almost an hour before calling the police.
Police formed a search and rescue team to look for the young boy in the nearby woods. But two days went by and still no Casey.
Then on January 24, someone called the police saying they heard a child crying in the woods. Police followed up on the information and found Casey at about 9:30 that night. They pulled him out of some briar(多刺野灌木). He was in good health.

Doctors at Carolina East Medical Center treated Casey for minor injuries. He was then released to his family on January 25.
His mother Brittany Hathaway talked with reporters from a local news agency and thanked everyone who joined in the search and rescue efforts.

【推荐3】Christmas at my house meant colorful decorations, candles in every window, homemade dinners by Mom and her matching red coat. I always believed that someday my own kids would gather here and enjoy the traditions that had been passed down each December.
Life had other plans. Mom found bet cancer in 2006 and died three years later. Three years after her death, I made my yearly trip to my childhood home for Christmas with my dad and sister. When I hunted for Christmas decorations up in the attic, an unusual yellow envelope caught my eye. Inside was a never published children’s book by Mom, dated February 10, 1993. It was titled The Evil Stepmother (Who Wasn’t). It’s the story of a little girl who loses her mother to cancer. Her father soon remarries, and at Christmas, the girl returns home to find her stepmother crying with a woman’s photograph in her hands. The stepmother says that she lost her mother, too, and always misses her most at Christmas.
I read Mom’s book and wondered why she had been moved to write it. She was years away from her cancer at the time. But there was no stepmother in our lives. So I put the book away, found the decorations I came for, and forgot about Mom’s book quickly.
Without the home that had been full of so many memories, I didn’t celebrate Christmas any more. I began to avoid the holiday music and even, for a while, the color red.
That changed in December 2017. Dad brought a woman to Christmas unexpectedly. When we first met we hugged each other shyly. Soon, she had Dad and me laughing. It was going so well. The three of us went out to pick out gifts. That’s when “While Christmas” began to play over the store’s speakers. I froze. It was the song Mom sang to me as a child to get me to sleep. Tears streamed down my face.
We got home, and I went to my room to calm down. There was a knock on the door. Dad’s girlfriend. She told me that Christmas was hard for her too and that she had lost her mother to Alzheimer’s.
“Do you see my coat?” she asked. “It was my mom’s. Your dad tells me your mother had a red coat too. Maybe we can wear them together sometime.”
I remembered the scene from Mom’s book and hugged this woman who made my dad happy, who was offering us a second chance at Christmas.
A year later, my sister and I attended Dad’s wedding. This past December. I hosted my first Christmas in New York. My stepmother and I decorated the house, candles in every window. We walked arm in arm down Broadway in our mothers’ red coats.

Instead of just becoming talking heads on TV, they decided to use their knowledge to help millions of children with speech disorder to find their own voices. They co-founded Voice Changer, which offers language rehabilitation(复原)for teenagers in China through online and in-person service platforms.
According to Zhang, each child needs to finish at least one three-month course, which consists of three 40-minute sessions a week. The length of the overall training program is dependent on each child's condition upon their evaluation.
“When we are teaching in-person courses, the parents cannot accompany their children. The children may feel a bit nervous in a strange environment, but they soon get used to it and start to enjoy the training,” she says.
They also launched a mini program on WeChat that provides online services for families of children with speech disorders-parents can upload their child's information and recordings to the self-testing tool and get a report. As well as online speech therapy(治疗),there are also online courses for parents, including guidance for speech therapy at home.
“We insist that parents should accompany their children when taking online courses as they need to play the role of both teaching assistant and desk mate,” she says.
There are only 10. 000 speech therapists in China, many of whom are not full-time. Unlike common volunteer work, to be a speech therapist volunteer, complex training is required before services can be offered.
“Speech therapy is a complex subject which requires knowledge, including training in education, psychology, linguistics and so on,” Zhang says, adding that their team has developed a training system for the volunteers to grow into professional speech therapists. 【推荐2】AIDS may be one of the most undesirable diseases in the world. Luckily, there is now hope for AIDS patients.
According to a recent paper published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Chinese scientists have successfully used CRISPR technology - a method of gene editing - to treat a patient with HIV. While it may not have cured the patient fully, it still represents a huge step forward in fighting the disease.
The patient was a 27-year-old Chinese man who was diagnosed with both AIDS and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (急性淋巴细胞白血病), a type of blood cancer. Despite his hopeless situation, doctors offered him a glimmer of hope: a bone marrow (骨髓) transplant to treat his cancer and an experimental treatment for his HIV.
They used this opportunity to edit the DNA in bone marrow stem cells from a donor before transplanting the cells into the patient.
Specifically, the treatment involved using the gene-editing tool CRISPR-Cas9 to delete a gene known as CCR5, which encodes a protein that HIV uses to get inside human cells. Without the gene, HIV is unable to infiltrate cells.
Talking about the gene, lead scientist Deng Hongkui told CNN, “After being edited, the cells - and the blood cells they produce - have the ability to resist HIV infection.”
Nineteen months after the treatment, the patient’s leukemia was in complete remission (缓解) and donor cells without CCR5 remained, according to the research paper.
Though the transplant did not cure the man’s HIV, it still showed the effectiveness of gene-editing technology, as there was no indication of any unintended genetic alterations - a major concern with past gene therapy experiments.
Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Centre for Health Security in the United States, who was not involved in the study, praised the treatment.
“They did a very innovative experiment. It was safe,” he told Live Science. “It should be viewed as a success.”
Deng believes gene-editing technology could “bring a new dawn” to blood-related diseases such as AIDS and sickle cell anemia (镰刀形细胞性贫血).
“Thanks to this new technology, the goal of a functional cure for AIDS is getting closer and closer,” he said.
1. The technology of CRISPR is to ___________.A.transplant cells | B.encode genes |
C.remove proteins | D.produce cells |
A.CCR5 and other genes in the patient’s cells were changed. |
B.The number of cells infected by HIV decreased. |
C.Some of the patient’s blood cells could resist HIV infection. |

A.It provided an innovative way to cure AIDS patients. |
B.It pointed out the problems of gene therapy. |
C.It could offer a safe treatment for blood-related diseases. |
D.It’s the first experiment to use gene-editing technology to treat AIDS. |
