One day, a young soldier walked up to a much decorated senior officer in the army and asked him: “Sir, what is the secret of your success in the army? I want to be an officer too.”
The officer looked at the young soldier steadily (一动不动地) for about three minutes and gave him a threatening (带有威胁的) order. He gave the young soldier a cup full of water and told him to walk round the training field five times. He clearly told him that his life depended on it, and if a drop of water fell from the cup, another soldier would shoot him on the head. Four soldiers were strategically (战略上的) positioned to shoot him down once a drop of water fell from the cup.
Seeing how serious the whole thing turned out, he took the cup full of water and went out to complete his task. The young soldier carefully walked round the training field five times without letting a drop fall from the cup. On completion of the task, he returned the full cup to the senior officer.
When the officer saw what he did to protect his life by not allowing a drop of water out of the cup, he asked him the following questions:
“Did you see those beautiful girls dancing at the nearby market?"
The young soldier replied, “No.”
“Did you see those soldiers playing football in the field?”
The young soldier replied, “No.”
“What about those people fighting across the other side of the field?”
The young soldier replied, “No.”
Then, the officer looked at him and said, “If you focus on your task, you will succeed and protect your life too.”
At last, the young soldier left happily.

In Nazi (纳粹的) Germany she saw the rise of Adolf Hitler and Anti-Semitism. On one occasion in Vienna she witnessed Jews being whipped by members of the Sturm Abteilung (SA). In 1939 Nancy married the wealthy French industrialist, Henri Fiocca, in Marseilles. Nancy was in France when the German Army invaded in May 1940. After the French government surrendered, Nancy joined the French Resistance. She worked with Ian Garrow’s group helping British airmen shot down over France to escape back to Britain.
In December 1940 the network was betrayed and Nancy was forced to go into hiding. She continued to work for the French Resistance and was eventually arrested while in Toulouse. It was now too dangerous to remain in occupied France and Nancy crossed the Pyrenees into Spain before travelling to Britain. She now joined the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and agreed to become a British special agent (特工).
On 29th April 1944, Nancy was parachuted into the Auvergne region of France. Her main aim was to locate local soldiers and to provide them with some guns that were being dropped by parachute by the Royal Air Force four times a week.
Nancy had the task of helping the resistance to prepare for the armed uprising that was due to coincide with the D-Day landings. She also led an attack against the Gestapo headquarters in Mountucon and a German gun factory. Henri Tardivat, one of her comrades in the resistance later said that: “She is the most feminine woman I know, until the fighting starts. Then she is like five men.”

But athletes aren’t the only ones that tried their best at the Games. All the organizers, volunteers and healthcare workers worked tirelessly during COVID-19-related challenges. Together they helped China to honor its promise to host streamlined, safe and splendid Games.
As athletes of the Chinese Winter Olympics and Paralympics delegations entered the hall on Friday for the gathering to honor those who made outstanding contributions to the Games, representatives of the organizers and volunteers applauded loudly. In fact, they themselves also deserve a round of applause because without their efforts and sacrifices, the smooth running of competitions under such difficult circumstances would have been a mission impossible.
China prepared for the Games for seven years. For China to have hosted the Winter Games on schedule was considered a huge success, but the fact that venue (场馆) conditions met such exacting standards greatly exceeded many people’s expectations.
Some athletes told me that they harbored some reservations about the Winter Games closed-loop management policy before arriving in China because they feared that it might affect their freedom of movement. They then soon found out that such concerns were unnecessary as they could travel anywhere and anytime they wished within the closed loop, which is only meant to keep them safe so they can fully concentrate on competitions. Then they became even more excited to compete after conducting training sessions at venues described as “the best that they have ever been”.
The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympics have left many memories. For many, the beautiful memories of peace, friendship and unity are surely among them, I think it’s the best reward for the organizers and volunteers.

One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a job interview. His appointment was at 10 a.m. and it was already 8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of his car. Obviously there was something wrong with the car.
