The device, which is sold on Tesla’s website alongside hats and the company’s existing desktop and portable chargers, is a small, Apple-like device that costs $65. It has an integrated USB-C cable for when you want to plug it directly into your device, and a USB-A port for non-USB-C devices. You can get it in black or white, but it only comes with 6,000mAh of juice and 5W of output charging (The wired charging method gets you 7.5W).
For about half the price, you can get Anker’s 10,000mAh Power Core charger, which has 12W of output charging but no wireless charging capabilities. For $50, you can get an RAV Power 10,400mAh wireless charger with 10W of output.
Of course, nobody is really buying this for the functions. They’re buying it because it has a Tesla logo on it and it looks really nice, which is totally fair for $65 and the ease of use wireless charging allows. It’s not a bad purchase for a big Tesla fan.

The other 3 sports—surfing, skateboarding and sport climbing—all made debuts in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. That is to say, audience watched these three sports as Olympic events for the first time.
The organizers stressed that four sports had been chosen since they would reflect the city’s identity and help take the Olympics to the street. They added that the purposes were to deliver a Games that was able to keep up with the times and encourage new audience and attract young people. Breakdancing is a typical example which can be played without the limitations of time and places in urban and other environments.
As one of the sports at the Young Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018, breakdancing now could see its popularity greatly raised. But the International Olympic Committee (IOC) needs to approve the French suggestion before it can be formally added to the 2024 Paris Olympics sports programme.
With new IOC rules first introduced to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Host cities can select sports and propose them for inclusion in those Games if they are popular in that country and add to the Game’s appeal.
Antonio Espinos Ortueta, the president of the World Karate Federation said, “Our sport has grown rapidly over the last years. We believe that we have met all the requirements and that we have the perfect conditions to be added to the sports programme. The study about the age of our bodies shows that different tissues inside us are effectively different ages. In 2012, Professor Steve Horvath at the University of California, Los Angeles, looked at something new—DNA methylation (甲基化), a naturally occurring process in which DNA is chemically changed over time.
Horvath analyzed the DNA in 8,000 tissue samples from different parts of the body in different people to study these markers. What he found was striking—the amount of methylation in cells from most parts of the body was a good predictor of the person’s age. But there were inconsistencies. Breast tissue, for instance, ages rapidly, whereas muscle ages slowly. The rates of ageing are also different in men and women. “There are many medical implications, from cancer to premature ageing diseases,” says Horvath. It has already been established that tissue that looks significantly older could be cancerous. Horvath’s study found that cancerous tissue has a biological age on average 36 years older than a subject’s actual age.
Could this knowledge help us live longer? “If the markers relate to a process that causes ageing, then it would be theoretically possible to slow down ageing by carefully targeting DNA methylation,” says Horvath. But before scientists got to work on dealing with methylation, they first needed to establish whether these changes were the cause of ageing or just a byproduct of another process. Now, a 2023 study from the University of Michigan has backed up Professor Horvath’s findings, which means they can safely make further studies of methylation.
“Our main aim was to see whether biological age acceleration measured from DNA methylation was predictive of health outcomes and death,” said research associate professor Jessica Faul. “It turned out that it is largely the case. You can use certain DNA methylation markers to predict age and age-related outcomes quite well.”

Their findings provide insights into the effects of lockdown on language learning and screen time in the generation of youngsters growing up during this extraordinary period.
Shortly after lockdown began in early March 2020 across 13 countries, parents were asked to complete an online questionnaire containing questions on the child’s age, exposure to different languages, number of siblings (兄弟姐妹) and vocabulary development. Parents were then contacted again at the end of the lockdown (for that family or in that area, in general). They were asked about the activities they undertook with their child during lockdown, the amount of time their child had access to screens both during lockdown and before, as well as questions on how much screen time they had themselves and their attitudes towards children’s screen time. Parents were also asked to complete a standardized vocabulary checklist indicating the number of words their child understood and/or said at the beginning, and again, at the end of lockdown so that an increase in the number of words gained over lockdown could be calculated.
The studies find that, during lockdown, children who were read to more frequently were reported to have learned more words, relative to their peers who were read to less frequently. However, children with increased exposure to screens learned to say fewer words, relative to their peers with less screen time. Besides, while children were exposed to more screen time during lockdown than before, overall, children were reported to have gained more words than expected during lockdown, relative to pre-pandemic levels. The increase in screen time during lockdown was greater if lockdown was longer, and in families with fewer years of education, and where parents reported using screens for longer themselves.
“While this suggests that the relatively short isolation did not detrimentally impact language in young children, we should be cautious in assuming this would apply during normal times or to longer lockdowns, given the extraordinary circumstances children and their parents faced during this time,” says Associate Professor Natalia Kartushina, University of Oslo.

Actually, no. A banana peel can take up to two years to be naturally processed, and with a third of motorists admitting to littering while driving, that’s a whole lot of discarded banana peels. An orange peel and a cigarette butt has a similar biodegrading (生物降解) term to that of a banana peel, but tin cans last up to 100 years; and plastic bottles last forever, as do glass bottles.
Despite the fact that longer-lasting materials will serve to damage the environment and its animals for longer, we can’t merely measure the severity of a certain type of rubbish by its lifetime. For example, despite having a fairly short length of biodegrading time, more than 120 tons of cigarette-related litter is discarded in the UK every day.
It’s not a cheap habit either: to keep our streets clean annually costs UK taxpayers £500 million, and when you include our green spaces, that goes up to £1 billion. So, it’s not surprising that if caught fly-tipping you could face a £20,000 fine or even jail time and, if you disposed of something dangerous, the court could give you five years to serve. Regardless of how severe these punishments might seem, however, among the reported cases only 2,000 were found guilty out of 825,000, so we still have some way to go in making sure people obey the rules.
1. What does the underlined word “discarded” in para1 mean?A.Harmless. | B.Processed. | C.Thrown. | D.Long-lasting. |
A.Glass bottles. | B.Tin cans. | C.Cigarette butts. | D.Banana peels. |
A.The severity of rubbish can be measured by its lifetime. |
B.Quite a few people were found guilty of illegally littering. |
C.Every year UK taxpayers spend £500 million keeping streets free of dirt. |
D.Cigarette-related litter and peels can be ignored for their fairly short lifetime. |
A.To inform readers of different biodegrading terms. |
B.To call for people not to litter illegally. |
C.To encourage people to use fewer plastic bags. |
D.To stress the importance of good behavior. |
CAN-DO PEOPLE | NO-CAN-DO |
Take initiative to make it happen Think about problems and barriers Act | Wait for something to happen to them Think about solutions and options Are acted upon |
If you think can-do, and you’re creative and persistent, it’s amazing what you can accomplish. During college, I remember being told that to fulfill my language requirement, I would “have to” take a class that I had no interest in and was meaningless to me. Instead of taking this class, however, I decided to create my own. So I put together a list of books I would read and the assignments I would do and found a teacher to sponsor me. I then went to the dean of the school and presented my case. He bought into my idea and I completed my language requirement by taking my self-built course.
American aviator Elinor Smith once said, “It has long since come to my attention that people of accomplishment rarely sat back and let things happen to them. They went out and happened to things.”
It’s so true. To reach your goals in life, you must seize the initiative. If you’re feeling bad about not being asked out on dates, don’t just sit around and sulk, do something about it. Find ways to meet people. Be friendly and try smiling a lot. Ask them out. They may not know how great you are.
Don’t wait for that perfect job to fall in your lap, go after it. Send out your resume, network, volunteer to work for free.
If you’re at a store and need assistance, don’t wait for the salesperson to find you, you find them.
Some people mistake can-do for being pushy, aggressive, or obnoxious. Wrong. Can-do is courageous, persistent, and smart. Others think can-do people stretch the rules and make their own laws. Not so. Can-do thinkers are creative, enterprising, and extremely resourceful.
George Bernard Shaw, the English playwright, knew all about can-do. Listen to how he said it: “People are always blaming their circumstances for what they are. I don’t believe in circumstances. The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.”
1. What are those can-do people more likely to do?A.They await in patience till their boss give the approval. |
B.They remain somewhat reserved in a romantic relationship. |
C.They always challenge people who think differently. |
D.They turn to his friends in We-chat when they need a hand. |
A.It’s circumstances not the people are to blame for what they are |
B.One should get up earlier in order to find a way out |
C.Have the initiative and you are in a better position to win |
D.he is eager to get on in the world |
A.By illustration. | B.By example. |
C.By reason. | D.By story. |

His sons actually began digging for gold in the land. Once they finished one piece they would start another. They began to realize that digging for gold was fun! Seeing that, Joe thought he would plant some crops where the dirt had been turned thoroughly. He planted com, tomatoes, and potatoes. His sons continued to dig through the soil, determined to find gold.
As each different crop became ready to be harvested, Joe started to realize that there was more than he and his family could ever eat. One of Joe 's neighbors suggested that he set up a vegetable stand. Joe and his wife did that very thing. This process went on for three years and Joe and his wife became quite rich from it. They were even able to send their sons off to college.

Beginning as early as 2020, NASA will offer visits to the International Space Station for $35,000 per night, not including transportation, to pretty much anyone who can pass a physical.
The reason this is a mistake, and a big one, is that NASA has worked for generations to create an image of astronauts as extraordinarily skilled, highly trained, courageous heroes. For example, NASA invites grade schools to participate in creating experiments that are carried on the space station. The astronauts talk to kids from space, sending a message that if you study, work hard and learn math and science, you may reach these heights, too.
According to one report, Las Vegas-based Bigelow Aerospace is making plans to haul four tourists at a time to the space station on SpaceX rockets. U.S. taxpayers forked over a hundred billion dollars to build the International Space Station. It would be nice to try to preserve the image of it as an inspirational achievement, instead of turning it into a flying Howard Johnson’s.
NASA’s press release about the space tourism program tries to cast it as a partnership with the private sector to “provide expanded opportunities” at the space station to “manufacture, market and promote commercial products and services.” But it also states that one goal is “quantifying NASA’s long-term demand for activities in low-Earth orbit.”
The space station has been costing U.S. taxpayers between $1.5 billion and $3 billion each year. If it’s perceived as a private Disneyland for the top tax bracket, public support for the entire space program could be at risk.
But worse, we will have degraded what once inspired us. Sometimes a nation needs stars in its eyes.
1. What is NASA’s space tourism program?A.To invite students to attend their experiments. |
B.To send visitors to the space station. |
C.To run a restaurant in the space station. |

Shared bikes seem to have appeared in Beijing overnight. Their bright colour and stylish design make them stand out from other bikes. More importantly, they are "smart". A shared bike can record the route it travels, the calories its rider consumes and the amounts of carbon emissions(排放)the ride saves. The smart lock is powered by solar energy. It is designed to produce power throughout the ride to keep its "smart" system running.
Registration(注册)for a shared bike is easy. As long as you have a smart phone, you're good to go. It takes only several minutes to register after scanning the QR code(二维码)on the bike. You have to provide your personal information such as name, ID card number and smart phone number. We are encouraging people to cycle short distances, rather than driving. We want to bring bikes back to China's cities, "said a founder of a bike-sharing company. "We are using new technology to provide better services."
The free-floating model of shared bikes frees users from the need to find specific drop-off and collection points, and the GPS in the smart lock allows them to locate and book bikes in advance using their smart phone.
The bike-sharing companies intend to develop a green travelling culture. The riders feel rewarded not only by building up their body, but also by helping to control climate change.
Given the huge user base in the"kingdom of bicycles"and the growing demand for a green lifestyle, the future of the business should be optimistic.

Heidi Smith and her husband, Randy, had spent hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars preparing for this. They made it. This year, the Smith family is keeping most of their scary fun a surprise. But one thing is for sure—if you go there, you'll have some scary fun. Just get ready to scream there!
The Smith family has turned their passion for Halloween into a way of giving back. It's free to visit, but they ask people to bring a food donation that goes directly to Gleaners Food Bank. It's because 1 in 7 Hoosiers are going hungry every day. Last year in one night, the Smith family collected enough for 600 meals, more than they had expected. It all went to help the 174,000 hungry people in Marion County. “It was so fun; it made all of the hard work all worth it. We had a lot of people come through many times,” Smith added.
Although their yard may be scary, the Smith family says hunger is much scarier. “We'd love to have twice as many meals as last year for Gleaners. If we hit more than that, we will be very pleased,” said Randy Smith.
The H & R “Haunt the Food Drive” will be open for visitors on Halloween. If you would like to visit, their address is 5338 Mark Lane, Indianapolis, Indiana. Click here to visit their Facebook page.
