How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments - mostly for entertainment purposes is fair and respectful?
Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats. Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes.
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range (分布区). The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs.
The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis(动物精神病). A worldwide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding(圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons why people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

When the message finished, he stood up with his feet against the edge of the low table, reached over with one paw (爪子) and slapped (拍打) the answering machine. The message came on again. He dropped back on the floor and listened happily. I told him “no,” and distracted (使分心) him from the answering machine while I erased (抹去) the message.

A Four-legged Guardian Angel
Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job, and now our financial situation was depressing. Finally, I had put the home on the market. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in discouragement, I sat typing up my application letters. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big, gentle Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn’t help sighing and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

For many of us, meeting new people can be really horrible. How many times have you been invited to an event — a party, dinner with a friend and their friends, lunch with a business associate,a weekend away with a friend or your partner and their family and friends — and turned it down for the comfort and safety of your own home? For the sincere social butterflies in the world, meeting new people can be exciting and fulfilling. However, for those who struggle with social anxiety, the mere thought of meeting new people can cause significant anxiety and even panic symptoms.
Social anxiety as a whole is a complex issue. It appears in numerous forms, and has many possible reasons for finding its way into our lives. As with everything else, there are also varying degrees of anxiety that is experienced from one person to the next. For this reason, there are three parts to discuss: Part 1: What does social anxiety look like? Part 2: Where does social anxiety come from? Part 3: What can be done to get past social anxiety?
There are times in our lives when we get tired, or there is a great movie on TV and we just want to lie lazily on the couch with a meal or dessert — so we choose not to go out. This is not social anxiety. The motivation here isn't to avoid uncomfortable symptoms associated with socializing. This was merely a decision and desire to do something at home.
Although social anxiety appears in different ways, the link among them is the feeling of anxiety or panic that, at its most basic level, is caused by fear of embarrassment, judgement or rejection by others. It mostly appears when the social situation involves meeting new people. However, it can also exist with people we have known for a long time. It is common for people to completely avoid social situations, or still go out and socialize while just trying to “get through it” and go home.
