Aunt Polly told Tom to paint the fence(栅栏). Tom felt very sad about it. Then he had an idea!

Reading is a good habit(习惯)，but the problem is, there’s too much to read these days, and too little time to read every word of it. There are hundreds of skills to help you read more in less time. Here are two skills that I think are very good.

Preview —if it’s long and hard. Previewing is very useful for getting a general idea of heavy reading like long magazine articles and science reports.

Here is how to preview.

●Read the first two paragraphs and the last two paragraphs carefully.

●Then read only the first sentence of the other paragraphs.

Previewing doesn’t gave you all the details. It tells you not to spend time on things you don’t really want or need to read.

Skim—if it’s short and simple. Skimming is a good way to get a main idea of light reading, like popular magazines or the sports of your daily newspaper.

Here’s how to skim.

●Get your eyes to move fast. Sweep them across each line.

●Pick up only a few key words in each line.

Everybody skims differently. You and I may not pick up the same words when we skim the same piece, but perhaps we’ll get the same idea of what it’s all about.

A bad start

Jack’s daughter, Emily,knocked over a cup of milk and it fell on his trousers at breakfast yesterday. Jack got annoyed. He shouted at his daughter and she started to cry. “Why did you shout at her?” asked his wife. “Why did you put the cup on the edge(边缘) of the table?” Jack shouted. Then he went to change his trousers.

Because Emily was sad, she didn’t get ready for school in time and she missed her bus. Jack had to drive Emily to school. Because he didn’t have enough time, he didn’t take his bag. He was forty minutes late for work. As soon as he got there, he had to go home again to get his bag.

Did it have to be a bad start?

Again the milk fell on Jack’s trousers, but this time he didn’t shout. He smiled and said, “It’s OK. Don’t worry!” Then he went to change his trousers. When he came back. Emily said, “Bye, Daddy.” And she ran out to catch her bus. Jack went to work early, and he had a great day. So, here’s the 90/10 secret.

Ten percent of life is what happens to us. We can’t control(控制) it. That’s life. Things happen and we have to deal with(应对) them. Ninety percent of life, however, is how we deal with it. Remember that when something bad happens next time.

A few days ago, I ran into(撞上) a stranger as he passed by. I said sorry to him, and he said, “Excuse me too, I wasn’t even watching for you.” We were very polite. Then we went on our way after saying goodbye.

Later in the kitchen at home, as I cooked our meal, my daughter Betty walked up to me. When I turned around, I nearly knocked her down. “Get out of the way!” I shouted angrily. She ran away, crying. That night, when I lay in bed, my husband said to me, “You were so rude to Betty. Go and look around on the kitchen floor, and you’ll find some flowers there. Betty brought those for you. She picked them herself, pink, yellow, and your favorite blue.”

When I heard this, I thought deeply. When meeting with a stranger, I was calm(平静的) and polite, but with my daughter, I was not patient(耐心的), I felt sad and tears began to fall.

I quietly went to Betty’s bed, “Wake up, my dear,” I said, “Are these the flowers you picked for me?” She smiled and said, “I found them by the tree. I knew you’d like them.”

“I am so sorry that I treated you that way today.” I said. And she whispered, “Mommy, that’s okay. I still love you anyway.” I kissed her and said, “I love you too and I do love the flowers.”
