My sister Alice and I have been trying to get people to stop dropping cigarette butts(烟头) for seven years. One day, we were walking in our hometown and saw hundreds of cigarette butts on the ground. They made the town look so ugly that we decided to start a group to make people stop dropping butts. We called it “No Butts About It”.
At first, we drew pictures with “The Earth is not your ashtray(烟灰缸)” written on them. We put the pictures around our hometown-in parks, on beaches, and along roads. We wanted to make people understand that dropping butts hurts the environment. Most smokers don’t think that dropping butts hurts the Earth. But it does, and all rubbish does!
Later, we wrote to companies and asked them for money to help us. We used the money to buy ashtrays and gave them to smokers. We wanted smokers to carry the ashtrays with them, therefore, they didn’t have to drop butts.
At the moment, we are trying to get cigarette companies to put an ashtray in each pack of cigarettes. Some companies want to do it. Many people have started to join our group since it began. Today there are 45 other “No Butts About It” groups in America.
Now there are even groups in England, Australia, and India! Many newspapers have written about my sister and me over the last seven years. And we have won many prizes for what we do. But we are not interested in prizes. We just want to make the Earth a better and cleaner place for animals, plants and people.
One day, it will be.

When you want to raise money for others, one best way is to try to write a donation letter. A donation letter is what you write to a person you expect, who will donate some of his money to support your good cause(事项). Though the cause may be good, it is usually hard to make a person willing to donate some of his hard-earned money. It takes some really great writing skills to write such a letter.
The donation letter for charity isn’t exactly a formal letter for business communication. You need to take a casual tone(采用一种随意的语气). Make sure that you know the name of the recipient(收信人) to sound more like a friendly gesture(姿态). Also, the language should not be quite serious and should be slightly informal, which can make your recipient willing to believe you.
Make sure that you include all the details about your program, your funds required, and your plan in the letter. The most important thing is to mention how someone gets to benefit(好处) because of the recipient’s contribution. Talk about how many lives your charity fund has been able to change and how many more you wish to change further. This may touch the reader and take him into making a donation towards your cause. Include the amount which you expect the recipient to donate, within your letter.
A typical donation letter is often divided into four paragraphs. The first paragraph will be an introduction to your organization, like what you do, how long you have been running, and your achievements. The second paragraph will give more details about your current(现在的) goals that you’re trying to reach. In the third paragraph you use a more direct method here, asking politely for any help. Keep it short and clear. The final paragraph is your conclusion, where you tell exactly how the help received would be put into good use. Add a “thank you” for any and all help received.
39. The person who writes a donation letter wants to ________.A.raise money for himself |
B.raise money for the recipient |
C.donate his own money to a charity |
D.ask the recipient to donate his money to a charity |
A.Relaxing and persuasive (劝导性的). | B.Happy and friendly. |
C.formal and honest. | D.Short and clear. |
A.Asking about the recipient’s plan. |
B.Including all the details of people in need. |
C.Telling directly the amount of money you expect. |
D.Showing the value and importance of one’s donation. |
A.The skills used for writing business letters. |
B.The general content of a donation letter. |
C.The common problems in a donation. |
D.The tips on making a donation. |
A.The amount of the needing money should be mentioned in a donation letter. |
B.It is usually not easy to make a person willing to donate his hard-earned money. |
C.The donation letter for charity is the same formal as that for business communication. |
D.A donation letter should tell the recipient how he can benefit if he gives a donation. |

There are many old habits, which we have got used to in our daily life. It’s very difficult for us to change them. For example, Chinese people often use their own chopsticks to take food from the dishes and share it with each other. However, it may make the virus spread among people, so local governments are encouraging people to change the habit.
On February 10, Beihai, a city in Guangxi, started an activity to advise people not to use their personal chopsticks or spoons to take food from the plates. In this way, it helped people avoid the spread of disease. Other cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou also took similar action. Taizhou even made standards of the length and colour of serving spoons and chopsticks. Such rules could help customers easily differentiate (区分) them from personal ones. Although it was not easy for people to obey the new rules at first, most people supported them.
Also, people showed good manners in other aspects (方面). In Haikou, when lots of people waited outside a shop in a long queue, they stood at least one metre away from each other. Besides, Beijing added some new rules. Everyone was asked to cover the mouth and nose with a handkerchief when coughing, and to wear a mask when having a cold.
During the special time, nearly all the people do things according to the new rules. As we can see, the outbreak (爆发) of COVID-19 may become a turning point for people to give up their old and bad habits.
回答下面5个问题,每题答案不超过5个单词。
44. What do Chinese people usually use to take food and share it with others?
45. How many other cities mentioned in Paragraph 2 took similar action like Beihai?
46. How do most people deal with the new rules?
47. What should people do when they have a cold?
48. What do people have to give up because of COVID-19?
People, including teenagers, usually use the Internet to get to know the world, but many parents worry that their children may meet with something unhealthy when searching online. In order to solve this problem, a new search engine(搜索引擎) for children called Kiddle has appeared.
Search results are filtered(过滤), so only safe websites are shown. Searches with bad words are all filtered, too. Kiddle has made search results better for children.
Kiddle uses the same colors as Google in its logo and a similar design, on its homepage, too-with an extra robot picture.
The top three Kiddle search results show safe websites and pages written specially for kids, and those websites and pages are well chosen and checked by Kiddle developers(开发者).
The fourth to seventh results will be safe websites that are not written specially for kids, but have content(内容)written simply. These results are also chosen and checked.
Results on the eighth and its following are safe and famous websites that are written for adults. They provide expert content, but are not easy for kids to understand.
Unlike on Google, most results appear along with large thumbnail pictures(缩略图) to make it easier for children to find what they are looking for. For example, when searching for “meow meow”, Google produces pages for information about a drug(毒品) that has “meow meow” as its nickname(绰号), but Kiddle lists safe information only about cats, even with some cat cartoon pictures.
The company explained, “Websites which appear in Kiddle search results satisfy(满足) child-friendly needs, as we filter websites with unhealthy content.”
