Dear Sigmund Friend, My brother plays the guitar very well, so my parents signed me up(报名) for guitar too. But I’m just not a guitar girl. What should I do? Can’t Hold |
Dear Can’t Hold, Thank you for your letter. While your parents want you to play the guitar, mine hoped I’d play baseball. You would be amazed at how much my parents love baseball. My dad was the star player on his school team, and they first met in line to buy hot dogs at a baseball game! Years ago, my parents thought baseball would just be in my blood and I’d be a talented player. Before I could say “Thanks, but no thanks”, they had signed me up and ordered my uniform! Don’t get me wrong. My training on baseball wasn’t terrible. Our coach was nice and the kids on our team were great. Even though I never became very good at baseball, I did improve by the end of that season. Then something unexpected happened one day. My grandmother took me to the community pool on the way home after the baseball practice. It turned out to be the best time I ever had. I swam happily with a boy called Ben and later we became good friends. Then we decided to join a swimming team. So I talked to my parents about it that night, and they were surprisingly understanding about my wanting to be on a swimming team. But they said I should finish out that year’s baseball season first. So dear Can’t Hold, here’s what I think. Your parents possibly think that because your brother is into guitar, you must be into it too. But they won’t know how you feel if you don’t talk to them about it. Why not let them know that guitar doesn’t seem like the right instrument for you, and give another instrument a try? Maybe you can give violin or piano a shot. Hope my advice is helpful. Sigmund Friend |

Wetlands—lakes, rivers, marshes and coasts, can maintain biodiversity(保护生物多样性), control floods and remove pollutants. They are also helpful to rice and fish production, transportation and so on. They are important and necessary feeding and breeding grounds for migratory birds. They are the most threatened ecosystem(受到威胁的生态系统).
World Wetlands Day came from the Convention on Wetlands(湿地公约) signed in Iran, China joined the convention on July 31, 1992. By the end of 2019, our country had 57 wetland nature reserves listed as major wetlands for protection under the convention, covering a total of nearly 7 million hectares. ______________________, as China has wetlands with 65.9 million hectares, 10 percent of the world’s wetland areas, which comes fourth in the world. China also has some of Asia’s most important wetlands, such as Poyang Lake and Asia’s longest river, Yangtze River.
However, a WWF research showed China’s wetlands were seriously threatened by degradation because of pollution, climate change and over-exploitation. So our government has been taking actions to return farmland to wetland and remove some fish farms.
It was reported the 57 key Chinese wetlands increased by 2,479 hectares from 2018 to 2019. Li Yan, an official from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, said at a news conference, “The area of wetlands in China has become larger over the past five years, growing by 202,600 hectares and making a great contribution to water quality and environmental protection. Between 2016 and 2020, China created 201 national wetland parks. China had 899 national wetland parks by the end of 2020, and nearly half of the country’s wetlands are protected by some level of government.”
China is carrying through on the convention for a continuous development and will make continuing efforts to perfect the laws on wetland protection. Several major projects on wetland protection will be carried out in some major areas, such as Yangtze River and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei province cluster.

While dogs are the most popular household pet, cats run a close second. Cats are not often noticed by people choosing a new four-legged friend. An animal expert explains why they make fantastic pets.
Cats VS Dogs It seems that many people prefer dogs to cats. Often people who grew up with dogs find it difficult to imagine owning and loving cats. But they can be surprised to learn how friendly and responsive cats are.
Good points of keeping cats Cats are always in small size. They can be a great pet choice for people with limited space and busy lifestyles. They don’t have the exercise requirements like dogs. Besides, they are quiet and clean. In a word, cats are low maintenance and happy to be left alone indoors. Cats can be very playful and interactive with children and offer them chances to learn to care for another, living being.
Keeping dogs and cats together Dogs and cats become great companions(伙伴), especially if they are raised at the same time. They can become friends with each other, the younger, the better.
Help to decide If you’ve never actually owned a cat, but are thinking of it, talk to cat owners, or offer to house-sit for a cat owner. You could visit an animal centre and interact with cats. It helps decide whether you might enjoy their companionship. You may be surprised to discover how wonderful cats really are.

Smart phones have become an essential part of our daily lives. This is worrying, as long-time use of smart phones harms children’s eyesight, cervical vertebrae(颈椎) and even the brain. It was reported China had 175 million Internet users under the age of 18, with 74 percent having their own mobile phones.
It’s already common practice in some countries to limit students’ use of mobile phones, France passed a law banning the use of mobile phones on school grounds for children under the age of 15. Other countries, including the United States, Italy and Japan, have also passed laws banning students from bringing phones to schools or classrooms.
The Ministry of Education in China released a notice that restricts primary and middle school students from bringing mobile phones to school. Those who require their phones for some need must get their parents’ and teachers’ approval and must hand their phones over during class time.
An English teacher from Beijing noticed that many students lost themselves in their phones. She said, “Most students are short of self-control. Spending too much time on the phone prevents them from learning.” A parent from Shanghai said, “The rules are good for children and limiting phone use is the right way to put their focus back on studies.”
A 16-year-old student said, “It is unwise to stop all the students taking their phones to school.” He thinks adults can’t simply cut them off from the Internet in the digital era and it’s more important to cultivate students’ ability to manage themselves.
