Wetlands—lakes, rivers, marshes and coasts, can maintain biodiversity(保护生物多样性), control floods and remove pollutants. They are also helpful to rice and fish production, transportation and so on. They are important and necessary feeding and breeding grounds for migratory birds. They are the most threatened ecosystem(受到威胁的生态系统).

World Wetlands Day came from the Convention on Wetlands(湿地公约) signed in Iran, China joined the convention on July 31, 1992. By the end of 2019, our country had 57 wetland nature reserves listed as major wetlands for protection under the convention, covering a total of nearly 7 million hectares. ______________________, as China has wetlands with 65.9 million hectares, 10 percent of the world’s wetland areas, which comes fourth in the world. China also has some of Asia’s most important wetlands, such as Poyang Lake and Asia’s longest river, Yangtze River.

However, a WWF research showed China’s wetlands were seriously threatened by degradation because of pollution, climate change and over-exploitation. So our government has been taking actions to return farmland to wetland and remove some fish farms.

It was reported the 57 key Chinese wetlands increased by 2,479 hectares from 2018 to 2019. Li Yan, an official from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration, said at a news conference, “The area of wetlands in China has become larger over the past five years, growing by 202,600 hectares and making a great contribution to water quality and environmental protection. Between 2016 and 2020, China created 201 national wetland parks. China had 899 national wetland parks by the end of 2020, and nearly half of the country’s wetlands are protected by some level of government.”

China is carrying through on the convention for a continuous development and will make continuing efforts to perfect the laws on wetland protection. Several major projects on wetland protection will be carried out in some major areas, such as Yangtze River and the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei province cluster.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,文章对海洋塑料污染问题进行分析并提出一些解决方案。

【推荐1】A report on hundreds of research studies says plastic pollution at sea is reaching worrying levels. The report warned that pollution will continue to grow even if immediate (立即的) action is taken to stop such waste from reaching the world’s oceans.

The report, by Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute, examined almost 2,600 research studies on plastic pollution.

Some areas, such as the Mediterranean, East China and Yellow Seas, already have dangerous levels of plastic. Other bodies of water will become more polluted in the future, the report found.

The writers reported that almost every kind of ocean animal has been affected by plastic pollution. That pollution is harming important environmental systems.

As plastic breaks down into smaller pieces, it is eaten by many different sea creatures. It is harmful to them and those who eat them.

Melanie Bergmann, one of the report’s writers, said getting that plastic out of the water again is nearly impossible. She added that policymakers (政策制定者) should make an effort to prevent any more pollution from entering the oceans.

Heike Vesper is with the World Wildlife Fund. She said people can help reduce plastic pollution by changing their behavior. But she added that governments must help in dealing with the problem.

The United Nations Environment Assembly is expected to meet and discuss the plastic pollution problem.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了海洋的颜色发生了很大变化,科学家说其中一个原因是人类活动,文章号召人们要保护海洋。

【推荐2】New research studying 20 years of ocean information has found that our oceans have changed the color. This also means a great change in the ecosystems (生态系统) of the oceans that is likely caused by human activities.

For tens of years, satellites (卫星) have been watching the color of Earth’s oceans and collecting information on the color of light reflecting (反射) off the water. Especially one of the satellites, the Aqua satellite has recently completed 20 years of collecting high-quality global ocean-color information. A new study has examined this information and found changes in ocean color over the past 20 years that cannot be explained by natural, year-to-year variability (可变性) alone.

“I’ve been running models to study the ocean color. The models have been telling me for years that these changes in ocean color are going to happen,” said Stephanie Dutkiewicz, one of the study’s writers. “To actually see it happening for real is not surprising. But I am scared that these changes are probably caused by human’s activities.”

The ocean’s color shows the life that lives in the water. Deep blue water usually has very little life. However, greener water means the presence of ecosystems, mainly plankton (浮游生物). Without plankton, many oceanic food webs would break down. This will greatly impact the sea life and humans who depend on fish for food.

“The color of our oceans has changed,” said Dutkiewicz. “And we can’t say how. But we can say that changes in color show changes in plankton communities. Plankton communities are the foundation (基础) of everything that feeds on plankton. So, we hope people take this seriously.”

Next up, Dutkiewicz will try to better understand the color changes in different ocean areas, as well as looking into what might be causing them.

1. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The purpose of the study.B.The writers of the study.
C.The process of the study.D.The advantages of the study.
2. How did Dutkiewicz feel about the changes in the color of oceans?
A.Disappointed.B.Worried.C.Surprised.D.Interested.
3. What does the underlined word “impact” probably mean?
A.Raise.B.Influence.C.Pollute.D.Improve.
4. According to Paragraph 5, what is Dutkiewicz trying to do?
A.To call on people to care about oceans.
B.To point out the importance of oceanic food webs.
C.To tell that plankton is the foundation of everything.
D.To explain how the color of our oceans has changed.
5. What may Dutkiewicz continue to study?
A.The ecosystems in different ocean areas.B.The results of changes in ocean color.
C.The plankton communities of different oceans.D.The reasons for changes in ocean color.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了气候变化是人类面临的一个大问题,减少碳排放这很重要。文中介绍了SpaceX将会把二氧化碳转化成燃料,这将使从火星到地球的旅行更容易,也有利于环保。

【推荐3】Climate change is a big problem humans are facing. How can we deal with it? Reducing carbon emissions (碳排放) is important. But what if we could capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air and use it to do other things?

Recently, SpaceX founder Elon Musk said that his company is working on a new program. It’s going to take CO2 out of the air and turn it into rocket fuel.

It will not only be good for Earth, but “will also be important for Mars,” Musk tweeted. The air on Mars is made up of 95 percent CO2. If we could turn CO2 into fuel, we could travel the long journey from Mars back to Earth in the future.

The idea may sound strange but it’s not totally crazy. There are already some technologies that might help with this. According to Di-Jia Liu, a chemist at the Argonne National Laboratory in the US, the carbon atoms (原子) in CO2 and the hydrogen (氢) atoms in water can be combined to make methane (甲烷) or ethanol (乙醇). They could be used as fuel. If we do this on Mars, energy from the sun might be used as a catalyst (催化剂).

The idea will also make space travel more eco-friendly. “If the CO2-based fuel could be used in a rocket launch, we could prevent 715 tons of CO2 from being emitted into the air,” said Stafford Sheehan from Air Company, a US company that focuses on CO2 capture technologies.

1. What is SpaceX working on?
A.Reducing CO2 emissions.B.Building a new rocket.
C.Turning CO2 into fuel.D.Traveling long distances on Mars.
2. What advantage will the program bring if it succeeds?
A.It will take energy from the sun.
B.It will take 95 percent of CO2 out of the air.
C.It will make it easier to travel from Mars to Earth.
D.It will create free catalysts for chemical experiments.
3. What is Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.How CO2 can be turned into fuel.
B.Where CO2 can be taken.
C.Why the program should be carried on Mars.
D.How the energy from the sun can be used.
4. What can we learn from what Stafford Sheehan said?
A.Scientists use 715 tons of CO2 to launch a rocket.
B.Rocket launching is an environmentally-friendly activity.
C.There will be no CO2 emissions anymore.
D.SpaceX’s idea would be good for the environment.
5. What is the best title of the passage?
A.Visit Space with CO2B.Climate change we face
C.Space travel in the futureD.A new program on Mars
