Should we be afraid of sharks? Maybe not. Some scientists do some research about the causes of shark attacks(袭击)and say that sharks don’t like the taste of humans! In fact, most people who were attacked didn’t die. They usually received only one bite(咬伤). Why is this?
There are many explanations(解释)of why sharks sometimes attack people. One is that sharks are just curious.
We know that sharks are the strongest animals in their environment, so they are not afraid of anything. It means they are curious when they see something unusual. Because they don’t have hands or feet, the only way they can learn about an object is to bite it. It is thought that sharks sometimes bite humans for this reason, and then swim away.
Scientists also say that sharks don’t want to waste energy trying to eat a human, because we have a lot of bones(骨头). It is hard for a shark to eat us because sharks don’t have hands, and they can’t pull the meat off our bones. Maybe that’s why they only bite us once.
Another guess is that sharks attack humans by mistake. Some sharks, such as the great white sharks, may sometimes mistake humans for a seal(海豹). People lying on the sea looks like seals when seen from below. Sharks like seals because they are fat and delicious.
No matter why shark attacks on humans, sharks should be afraid of us. Sadly, we kill almost 40 million of them each year.
45. The underlined word “curious” means “______” in Chinese.A.好奇的 | B.恐惧的 | C.激动的 | D.烦躁的 |
A.Friendly. | B.Strong. | C.Not delicious. | D.Convenient to eat. |
A.Because humans have hands and feet. |
B.Because many sharks are killed by humans. |
C.Because their living environment is polluted by humans. |
D.Because there are more humans than sharks in the world. |
A.To tell surfers to stay away from sharks. |
B.To ask people to stop killing sharks. |
C.To let us know the reasons for shark attacks on people. |
D.To show that humans are much stronger than sharks. |
“I spent my whole life doing one thing,” Gu Fangzhou once said. Known as “the father of sugar pills (糖丸)”, Gu died at age 92 on January 2, 2019. He was also “the People’s Scientist” for his polio (脊髓灰质炎) research.
Gu Fangzhou, a famous medical scientist, was born in June, 1926. Gu’s family faced a difficult time with the sudden death of his father. He studied hard and finally entered Peking University as a medical student in 1944. After graduating from university, Gu made the decision to work to help improve public health.
In 1955, polio broke out in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. It made 1,680 people disable, mostly children aged below seven. It spread to neighboring areas and made 466 people die. Gu was asked to lead polio research in 1957. “At that time the only way to prevent polio was to invent a vaccine (疫苗),” said Gu.
In 1959 Gu succeeded in developing the first polio live vaccine. Later, he developed the “sugar pill” vaccine in the early 1960s. It not only tasted better but was more affordable (买得起的) and easier to keep. In order to test the vaccine, Gu himself tried the vaccine and later his one-month-old son was vaccinated (接种疫苗). This encouraged his team to try the vaccine on their kids. They became the first group of people in China to try a polio vaccine. “If we don’t believe in what we produce, how can others believe in it?” said Gu.
Gradually, the sugar polio vaccine was made available in China. It saved millions of people, especially kids, from being disabled. In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that China was already a polio-free (无脊髓灰质炎) country. “We feel satisfied. I can tell people that I tried my best, and your kids will no longer get polio,” said Gu. “That’s all we hoped for.”

The first Chinese actor captured (征服) the hearts of many Chinese in the USA. He read a letter by Zhu Geliang (181~ 234) to the emperor of Shuhan during the Three Kingdoms (220~280) period in the new season of Growling Tiger and Roaring Dragon (《虎啸龙吟》).
The letter has been read by so many students. We would never have thought that the text written in old Chinese could be so beautifully read in another language. As a result, foreigners begin to show interest in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, translated by C. H. Brewitt-Tailor and Robert E. Hegel.
Earlier in November, 1979, pupils in England were able to watch a new TV program called Monkey. Most of them were hearing the story for the first time. However, the story of the Monkey King isn’t new to Chinese children in the traditional Chinese book Journey to the West.
As soon as the TV programme came out more than 30 years ago, western children became interested in reading this story because the clever Monkey King keeps fighting to help the weak and never gives up.
Chinese scholars (学者) should do a better job of introducing Chinese literature (文学) to the rest of the world. At the same time, we could encourage western schools to try something different.
Reading international literature is an effective way of understanding other people in the world. And the more we understand each other, the more beautiful the world will be.

I usually go away with my parents on the camping trip twice a year, and I
think I should take a computer course in this summer. It’s a skill I really need.
These days, every time you look for a job, they expect you be good at it. My
sister Janet is three years youngest than me. She has been thinking about taking
an Italian course for a long time. She thinks it’s very useful, especially if you’re
traveling in Central or South America. Her friend speaks it very good and often
