My wife Julie and I were out on the road that runs around where we live, when we saw an old worn-out dog sturnbling(蹒跚)painfully up the road. We stopped, talked gently to the dog and patted it. I checked and there was a collar with a phone number. I called but no one answered.

The dog was painfully thin. So Julie ran home to get some of our dog’s food while I tried to encourage the dog. After Julie came back, we sat down on the sidewalk while our new friend ate up the food. Eventually we got her home.

After trying for many times we got a response from the number. A lady came around with a bunch of flowers for us. She explained that Tara had been her father’s dog. She was very old and got lost that morning. So, Tara was safely returned home.

Here is another side of the story:

Actually Julie and I were out that morning because I was leaving. She was trying to persuade me to come back, but I wasn’t hearing anything that made that sound likely.

I was about to turn and so when an old black dog walked between us and almost fell down. Suddenly we had something more important than our problem to worry about. There was a creature in need right before us and we had to work together to help it.

We did help it. And here I am writing the story in my own home, in my own family.

In the song “Love Is Not a Fight” Warren Barfield talks about marriage. At one point he sings, “And if we try to leave, may God send angels to guard the door.”

Sometimes angels come disguised(伪装)as dogs.

26. How was the dog when found?
A.Too weak to walk.
B.Thin and worn out.
C.Unable to eat food.
D.Homeless but gentle.
27. We can infer from Paragraph 2 that ________.

C.Julie bought some food for the dog
D.the dog didn’t like the food
28. The underlined part “our problem” in the passage refers to the fact that ________.
A.the writer didn’t want to take Julie’s advice
B.an old black dog appeared in front of them
C.Julie disagreed with the writer’s travel on business

They say that “travel is the best teacher” and there is no better example of this idea than the Ming dynasty travel writer and geographer Xu Xiake (1587 — 1641). His book The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake, not only encouraged a love of travelling among Chinese people but provided important scientific information about the country’s land and geography.

Born into a wealthy Jiangyin family, Xu became interested in books about different places at an early age and wanted to travel. When he was 18, however, Xu’s father died and so, it seemed, did his travelling dreams. He now was responsible for the family farm and taking care of his 60-year-old mother as tradition required.

But his mother had different ideas. Understanding her son’s love of travel and valuing the knowledge he could get from such experiences, this modern-thinking woman refused to keep her son at home. She agreed that Xu could travel for three months every year, when there was less farm work.

So at the age of twenty and with his mother’s support, Xu set off for the first time, leaving behind not only his mother but his new wife as well. He would repeat this goodbye each year for most of the next 30 years. During this time, carefully studying the lands he passed through and recording his experiences and many discoveries in a diary. This diary, which once had over 500, would eventually become The Travel Notes of Xu Xiake.

Although rich, Xu avoided comfortable travel, preferring to go almost everywhere on foot. This way he could research the environment in detail and get a true picture of the natural world. Many of his trips were to hard-to-reach mountain areas, robbed and beaten during his journeys.

Sadly Xu became seriously ill during his last and longest journey, a 4-year trip through the Southwest of China. He died in 1641, soon after returning to his hometown for the last time. When his diary was finally printed years after his death, it still made Xu a travelling legend around the world.

How do money problems influence our social life? Do we simply stop going out and enjoying ourselves? And, if we do stop going out, are there any other ways to party?

Last Christmas, Yorkshire Bank, UK did a survey to see how people were planning to celebrate the festive season when they had not much money to spend. They found that eight out of ten Britons preferred an invitation to a house party to a night out in a bar or club.

So, the question is, how can we throw a party without spending all our money? Easy just read our “hot tips”:

Hot Tip #1 — Careful planning

“It’s all in the planning,” claim party experts. If you plan the number of guests and the menu with prices in mind, it won’t be expensive. Remember, less is more — the fewer guests you invite the lower your costs will be. Equally, if you hold the party in your own home, if you buy a few candles and simple decorations, you’ll be able to create a bar scene in your own front room.

Hot Tip #2 — Shop intelligently

One of the biggest costs is the food and drink. If you shop efficiently, you will spend less money on them. In big supermarkets, you often have “three for the price of two” food offers. You can also pick up alcohol (酒), people won’t require a three course meal — a simple spread of crisps, olives and dips (调味酱).

Hot Tip #3一Caring is sharing

Don’t be scared to ask your guests to bring something. If you invite close friends, they’ll be happy to contribute. For example, you could ask someone to bring some snacks and someone else to bring cups. After all, the idea is to get your nearest and dearest together in honour of friendship and good times.

So what are you waiting for? Find an excuse to celebrate and start sending out those invitations. But remember, save yourself some money, get creative and don’t do everything yourself.

33. The survey was done to find out ________.
A.where people could shop efficiently on Christmas
B.what stopped people going out and having fun
C.how people without much money celebrated Christmas
D.why Britons wanted to have a night out in a bar or club
34. Yorkshire Bank surveyed 1000 people, how many of them preferred a house party?
A.8.B.18.C.80.D.800.
35. According to the hot tips, what should we do for a party with less money?
A.Invite as many friends as you can.
B.Ask a friend to bring some snacks.
C.Prepare a three-course meal.
D.Find an excuse to ask for help.
36. In which part of a newspaper can we probably find this article?
A.Advice page.
B.Shopping tips.
C.Sports and Health.
D.Fashion and Life.

The popular TV program Readers has prompted more people in China to practice reading aloud in booths(亭)set up in big cities across the country.
