Winter swimming has many benefits:
• Helps blood move around your body faster.
• Helps keep you fit.
• Improves your immune system.
• Helps your body better deal with low temperatures.
TIPS Start with just one minute twice a week, and then build up. You can also prepare your body with very cold and short showers. |
Take more breath in.
Experienced winter swimmers take two breaths in instead of one. Try to get more oxygen(氧气) into the blood.
Recovery(恢复) is the key.
After the swim, drink something warm and eat something sugary. Do not have a hot shower—your body will send blood away from your vital organs (重要器官).

The best-loved pig in Hong Kong is called McDull. His mom makes a wish that he will look like Chow Yun-fat or Tony Leung, but he is distinguished (区分) only by a birthmark around his right eye.
The cartoon piglet is not smart, either. Everything he tries, he fails. He wants to be an Olympic champion of qiangbaoshan, but the sport doesn’t really exist, of course. He dreams of going to the Maldives, but ending up on a one-day tour of a Hong Kong landmark instead.
However, the slow, dumb pig has won over Hong Kong people, often stereotyped (塑造) as eager to quick success. So far, there are five McDull movies shown in both the mainland and Hong Kong.
The popularity of McDull sometimes makes his creator Alice Mak confused (困惑的). “Maybe people see themselves and their friends in McDull,” she says. Like McDull, Mak moves and speaks slowly. She describes herself as a simple person, who does not try to draw too much meaning from the McDull stories.
“McDull reminds people they used to be as simple and happy as him,” Mak says. “If there is a theme in all the McDull movies, it is about how a simple person keeps his or her simplicity in a complicated (复杂) world.”
In one of the McDull movies, he talks to the audience: “I suddenly realize that there is something you just cannot have. No noodles, no Maldives, no golden medal, no treasure...it turns out that being stupid is not funny, it could mean failure. Disappointment is not funny, fat is not funny, fat does not even mean you have more strength. When I grow up, when I face the tough world that is not funny, what should I do?”
“What he has been doing in the movies is to find new dreams. Most of them keep failing him, but he always starts again with a new one,” Mak says. “Maybe that’s why both children and adults find him cute.”

Li Meixi, 12, feels anxious(焦虑的)about her looks—not her face, but her outfit(穿搭). When she sees stylish people on the street, she tries not to run into them. “I am afraid that they think I am out of style. Ashamed(羞愧的)of my ordinary outfit, I feel like I don’t even deserve to walk on the same street with them,” said Li, from Chengdu, Sichuan.
What Li is experiencing is fashion anxiety. It worries many people today. They are anxious about their outfits, afraid of being seen out of style. A vlogger shared a video about her fashion anxiety on Sina Weibo and it quickly became a hot topic.
A big reason for fashion anxiety is fashion bullying(欺凌), experts said. As fashion magazines, advertisements and icons sport the “latest and greatest” fashion, there’s a lot of pressure on people, especially teenagers, to follow them, no matter how expensive it might be. “The need to belong in groups is very important to young learners and exclusion is something they see as the end of the world.” said Andy Cranham, a teacher at City of Bristol College, UK.
Another reason some people might have fashion anxiety is that they don’t have a sense of self—identity, said The Paper. It looks like we feel anxious about our outfits, but actually we are not confident enough. So we care about how fashionable people look at us. We easily doubt ourselves. The reality is that those people usually don’t notice us at all.
Fashion trends come and go, always changing. Instead of rushing to follow a trend, the key is to find your own style. If you’re able to wear something with confidence, you will be the one starting a trend. More importantly, an outfit is just a part of your image. It can’t tell the true you. What also matters is your personality and abilities.

According to a recent report, about 18% of China’s Internet users are under 19 years old. And nearly 1/4 of them are students. While benefiting a lot from the Internet, such as education and communication, teenagers often face dangers and risks. To better protect them, the Chinese government last year set up a special system which has come to be known as the “Teenager Mode.” Many live online video platforms (平台) are now using it, but how effective is it?
“Teenager Mode” seems to be a firewall to protect teenage Internet users from overuse. Platforms have their own ways to do that, such as time limits and passwords. They can also stop rewarding, recharging (续费) and so on.
Although there are some advantages, “Teenager Mode” still has its problems. For example, many parents complain that their children can still see something unsuitable on some platforms although they use “Teenager Mode”. And if teenagers get hold of the full password, they can enter and exit whenever they like.
Experts say the system is still very new and it takes time and energy to improve it. “‘Teenager Mode’ doesn’t have the same standard yet. For platforms, they should make every effort to truly meet the requirements of the regulatory authorities (管理当局),” said Wang Sixin, the president of Beijing Net Law Society.
Others say “Teenager Mode” doesn’t really limit the time teenagers spend online. They can simply go from one app or platform to another till they use up the time limit on each. To improve it, first of all, the time spent on each app or platform needs to be shared. Second, in order to help parents control their children’s time spent online, the app or platform can trigger(触发) an alarm to warn the parents.
In all, the system is an important first step to protect young people from the dangers and risks of the Internet, but more needs to be done.
32. The writer starts the passage by ________.A.comparing facts | B.providing an example | C.telling a story | D.listing numbers |

B.”Teenager Mode” only sets time limits and passwords for teenager users |
C.the app or platform can trigger an alarm to warn the parents |

Since the year 2022 is the Year of the Tiger, do you know anyone born in the Year of the Tiger? What’s their personality like? Are they brave, strong, tenacious(顽强的)and sympathetic? If so, then they are a typical “tiger”.
In Chinese culture, tigers are considered the king of all beasts.
They symbolize power, energy, protection, generosity and unpredictability. Tigers are regarded as fearless creatures, so that’s why in China you can see images of tigers on the walls of temples and houses to ward off disasters and danger.
Tigers have an important cultural significance not just in China, but across Asia.
▲ . For example, strong economies in the East — Singapore, South Korea, China’s Hong Kong and Taiwan—were called “The Four Asian Tigers”. In the book Life of Pie, Canadian writer Yann Martel chose a Bengal tiger as the partner for Indian boy Pie on his survival adventure in the Pacific Ocean. French fashion brand KENZO takes the tiger as its main theme when it tries to show Eastern elements with European design.
Instead of tigers, lions are considered as the king of all beasts in the West. Brave warriors(勇士)were given the name “the lion”. In Europe, the animal is a national sign for England as well as for Norway, Spain, Belgium and 13 other countries.
But in the West, tigers are also seen as a very powerful animal. In English, if you want someone to calm down, you can say to them, “easy tiger”. Another famous phrase is: “Eye of the Tiger”, which means fierceness and strength.
Tigers are also one of my favorite animals. I first learned about the beauty of tigers as a child, while watching animal documentaries. If you ask my mom, she’ll tell you that my most precious toy while growing up was my toy tiger, which I still treasure dearly to this day. As a young animal lover, I felt so sad that they were an endangered species and I wanted to help protect them.
Just like tigers serve as a symbol of protection in Chinese culture, we can only hope that in the upcoming Year of the Tiger more people can learn about tigers and help protect them and their habitats from further destruction.

C.As they mostly live in Asia, for many people in the West, they have become a cultural symbol of Eastern countries. |
