Writer Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter discovers the identity of her father and brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.

It was a dark and windy night. The wind blew hard and the rain beat down.

Harry and his wife were in bed. Although Harry slept through the storm, his wife woke up. She lay in bed, unable to sleep, listening to the noise of the storm.

Suddenly she heard a different noise. It sounded like someone hitting on the window.

She was very frightened. She woke her husband up.

“Harry,” she whispered, “there’s someone outside. Listen.”

“It’s nothing,” he said, “just a branch of a tree hitting against the window in the wind. Go back to sleep.”

He turned over and went back to sleep.

The hitting continued. It got louder and louder, then the window began to rattle (嘎嘎作响).

Harry’s wife woke him up again.

“Harry, it isn’t just the wind. There’s somebody there. I know there is. Get up and look.”

Harry got out of bed and walked across the room to the window. He pulled the curtain a little and looked out. He saw a man standing on the top of a wall outside the window. He smiled at the man and then went back to bed.

“Well?” his wife asked. “Was there anyone there?”

“Yes,” Harry said. “There’s a man trying to get in.”

“Then do something!” his wife cried. “Phone the police.”

“Not yet,” Harry said. “Wait until he opens the window. I’ve been trying to get it open since we had the house painted last year.”

Death is a scary thing and even a taboo (禁忌) topic in many cultures.     16    

    17     It is a time of remembrance of loved ones who have passed away.

There’s a story that after death, souls (灵魂) can only communicate with their still-living families in the first days of November.     18    

To honor the dead, people throughout the country build altars (祭台) at home during this holiday. They decorate them with candles, flowers, skulls (骷髅头) and gifts.     19    

Sometimes, in some public areas, there are parties, where people wear their own elaborate skeleton (精致的骷髅) costurnes.

In Mexico, The Day of the Dead is truly a celebration of life. People learn to respect that life is short.     20     They are then free to enjoy and appreciate every moment.
