Once, there were two women. They lived in the same village. They grew the same plants(植物) in their own gardens. Lisa was hard-working and looked after her plants well every day. Rebecca didn’t do like her. She just let her plants grow themselves.
One evening, there was a big storm(暴风雨) with heavy rain. It destroyed many of the plants. The next morning, when Lisa woke up, she found that all of her plants fell down to the ground because of the rain. However, when she got to Rebecca’s garden, she saw that all of the plants were still standing in the garden.
How did this happen? The plants of the relaxed woman learned to do things on their own from the very beginning. They grew deeper roots(根) and made places for themselves in the soil(土壤). They could stand up strong on their own, even during a storm. But Lisa did everything for her plants, they never learned to live through any difficulties.
It is the same for us. If you just let others do everything for you you’ll never learn to do things on your own.

People with pets at home often think they know a lot about their pets. But that is not real. Most of them often don’t know when their pets are nervous(紧张).
There is a new study from scientists. It finds that dogs are nervous when they hear home noises from a vacuum(吸尘器). And many pet owners don’t know this.
“Ginny was a very friendly dog. But one day she looked nervous, and even stopped eating for a few days,” says Grigg, one of the scientists. “Later, I found it was because of the noises from a smoke detector(烟雾报警器) in the house. When the noise stopped, Ginny became normal(正常) soon. Then I thought this was interesting and started to study it.”
The scientists asked 368 dog owners about their pets’ reactions(反应) to home noises. They also watched many videos online. They found that high-frequency(频率) noises like the noises from a smoke detector can make dogs nervous more easily than low-frequency noises like the noises from a vacuum. “But the feelings to noises are different, so not every dog is afraid of these noises,” says Grigg.
Are cats also afraid of home noises? Scientists are not sure. That will be another study soon. Now they only hope the study on dogs will help owners know more about what home noises would do to their dogs, so they can do something to help with the problem.
