Anderson says that drawing had been her hobby long before she began playing basketball. She likes to paint on things that aren’t meant to be painted. When she was a little girl, he liked to draw on the walls of her bedroom.
One day, Anderson saw someone covering his tennis shoes in newsprint(报纸图案). She was interested in this creative idea. A friend of hers happened to ask if she could paint on an old pair of shoes. Anderson has now set up her own shoe art company. Over the past year, she has painted and sold more than 200 pairs of sneakers, some of these orders even came from famous basketball layers and sports coaches.

On this year’s International Women’s Day, for example, Anderson created designs to show the power of women. “This is the decade(十年) of women,” she said. “My generation has been quite lucky. We have seen women do many amazing things, from starting companies to wining at sports.”

How far can scientists let their curiosity go? The Ig Noble Prize(搞笑诺贝尔奖), a spoof(模仿)of the prestigious(权威的)Nobel Prize, is to award unusual or unimportant achievements in scientific research.
The awards are given every year to the 10 strangest research projects of the year. It is to “honor achievements that first make people laugh, and then make them think?”
On Septermber 12, the 2019 winners of the Ig Nobel prize were announced. Here are three of them. See how they bring you fun and make you think.
Medicine Prize: Pizza
It’s one of the world’s most popular food, but what if we told you that a pizza can protect you against illness and death? According to the Ig Nobel Medicine Prize winner, eating more pizzas can lower the risk of cancer and heart disease-if your pizza is filled with fruits and veggies. These provide flavonoids to fight against certain disease. So, if you’re a pizza lover, you now have one more reason to love it.
Economies Prize: Dirty Money
As one of the most frequently passed items on the planet, paper money is known to pick up all kinds of bacteria(细菌). Which country’s money is the dirtiest? To find the answer, an international team of scientists compared seven countries’ paper money. They found that the Romanian Leu, carry more drug-resistant pathogens(病原体). Perhaps this will make cashless(无现金的)payments more popular.
Biology Prize: Cockroach(绿耗)
Cockroaches are well known for their survival abilities, but few people know they can sense magnetic(磁性的)fields. More surprisingly, an international team found that dead cockroaches have more magnetic qualities than live ones. That’s because magnetic qualities drop when the temperature gets higher.

How can people in ancient times do calculations(计算)? In the very beginning, the cleverest thought of using stones and seashells. Then, around the 2nd century BC, they invented the abacus. Some researchers consider the invention to be the world’s oldest “calculator”. In China, people used abacuses to do calculations quickly for thousands of years before electronic calculators became popular.
The abacus is usually made of wood. It has many beads(珠子). Each bead above the horizontal divider(横向分隔竿) stands for five, and each bead below the divider stands for one. As for the vertical rods(竖向分隔竿), each one stands for a different digit(数位). The rightmost is ones, the second is tens, the third is hundreds, and so on. Each bead in the central area has a value. Those away from the horizontal divider are ready to use. By moving the beads up or down, one can do all kinds of calculations. Because of this, abacus computations are also called “bead computations”.
It is a joy to watch a skilled hand use an abacus. Fingers move, beads knock and after a few seconds, the result comes out. It requires lots of practice to use the abacus well. In the past, the use of the abacus was taught in all schools. It was considered to be an important skill that everybody needed to pick up.
Today, abacuses are no longer widely used. However, we can still feel the important roles they once played. Abacuses have become a symbol. Because they used to be a must—have for business people, some have come to believe that abacuses can help their owners gather wealth. People often gift a newborn a golden abacus—shaped amulet. Delia was a young pianist. Her husband, Joe, was a young artist.
Each of them was taking lessons: Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. Their teachers were the very best, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford, but … when you love your art, nothing is too much.
But soon the money began to run out, and they couldn’t afford the lessons any more.
Then one day Delia came back home and told Joe that she had met a man whose daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano, and he was going to pay her $ 50 an hour.
“Delia,” Joe said, “I’ll be much happier if you keep up your lessons,” Delia said it didn’t matter. “When I’ve had some money, I’ll continue.” But Joe also decided to stop his lessons, to draw pictures and sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and proudly took $ 200 from his pocket. “I met a man from Vermont,” he said, “who bought one of my pictures. And he wants to buy more!”
_________________. They didn’t have to worry any more about money.
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia’s hand was wrapped in a bandage (绷带). He asked her what had happened. “Oh,” said Delia. “My student, Sally, asked me to make some coffee for her. I dropped the coffee and burned my hand. Sally went straight to the drugstore and got this bandage for me.”
“Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks?” Joe asked. She tried not to tell him, but the tears came. “Oh Joe, I couldn’t get any students, so I worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Today, I burned my hand with hot water. So I can’t work any more. But we’ll still have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we?”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont, ” he said. “I’ve been working in a drugstore, and today someone came in to buy bandages for a woman who’s burned her hand. So when I saw you, well, I guessed.”
They both laughed.
