A Nobel Prize is considered by most people as one of the highest international honours a person can receive. As you know, the prizes were started by a Swedish called Alfred Nobel. He was born in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. Alfred Nobel was a great scientist. He made two important inventions, and so he became very rich. Although he was rich, Nobel was not happy. He never married or had children. Also, he was a sick man during his large part of life. When he died at the age of 63, he left a fund of $9, 000, 000. The money was to be used in giving prizes to those who made great achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and world peace.
The first Nobel Prize was given on December 10, 1901, five years after Nobel’s death. Since then many famous people from all over the world have been given Nobel Prizes for their achievements.
Each prize has three parts. The first part is a gold medal. Second, a winner of a Nobel Prize is given a certificate, saying that he has been given the prize. The third part of the prize is a large amount of money—about $40, 000.
Often a prize is given to just one person, but not always. Sometimes a prize is shared. It may be given to two or more people who have worked together. It is also sometimes true that a prize is not given at all if there is no great achievement. In 1972, for example, no Nobel Peace Prize was given.

When the idea of having some snack foods comes to mind, there’s a good chance that you will think of a bag of potato chips at once. Yes, potato chips are one of the most common snacks in our daily life. They are very popular among both children and adults. It’s very easy for us to eat a whole bag of chips in a few minutes. But have you ever stopped and thought about what exactly happens to your body when you eat potato chips, especially if you eat a big bag every day?
If you eat potato chips every day, you are likely to put on weight. A study shows that people who have potato chips as a part of their diets gain weight easily. It’s no wonder they are on the list of snacks that cause you to gain weight.
Studies have also shown that a high intake of sodium (钠的大量摄入) is connected with a higher risk of high blood pressure. One of the main components (成分) of potato chips is sodium. If you often eat potato chips, over time, you’re going to end up developing high blood pressure.
Besides, you could increase the risk of getting cancer. This seems a bit extreme (极端的). However, according to the American Cancer Society, potato chips have acrylamide, something that is created in high-starch (高淀粉) foods when they’re cooked in hot oil, over a fire, or in an oven. Studies on mice have shown that it has something to do with cancer.
Thinking about all these, what should you do then? Just take it easy. You needn’t worry too much. If you can limit yourself to a small, snack-size bag of potato chips once in a while, instead of eating a large bag every day, you’ll be fine.
