Once there was a rich and clever boy who had everything he wanted, but he was only interested in the rarest things. One day he saw an old ________ , which was said to be very mysterious(神奇的). Have you grown taller and stronger? On Sept 3, the Ministry of Education brought out the results of the eighth national health survey for students from primary school to college and university. The survey comes out every five years. This year’s survey showed Chinese studeents’ overall health and fitness have improved since 2014.

Among all age groups, the rate for middle school students in good health saw the biggest rise, up by 5, 1% from 2014 to 2019. Their height, weight and bust sizes(胸围)have all increased(增长). For example, the height of boys and girls each increased 1. 69 cm and 0. 97 cm in the age group of 13 to 15.

There was also a rise in speed(速度)and lung capacity(肺活量)among teenagers aged 13 to 15. The lung capacity of boys increased 209. 7 ml, and that of girls increased 187. 2 ml. Girls’ running in the 800 m race improved by 4. 49 seconds, while boys’ improved by 6. 50 seconds in the 1, 000 m race.

Wang Dengfeng, one of the policy makers from the Ministry of Education, said that a series of education policies(政策)led to the improvement. These policies have helped students get more physical exercise, he added.

Alexis, 17, sat quietly in her dad’s car. She let her eyes lazily look out. Then a deer came into view about 200 yards in front of them. “Dad, there’s a deer there!” Alexis said. It was a male deer with sharp antlers (角) on each side of its head.

As the car moved closer, Alexis saw that the deer’s head was bent toward the ground. Then she heard a scream and saw an arm fly up near the deer’s head. Alexis realized the deer was attacking a woman. Sue, a 44-year-old mother, had been out for her morning run. The deer followed her and moved closer. “I knew I was in trouble” Sue said. She went to pick up a stick for self-protection, and the deer rushed over. It lifted her with its antlers and threw her into the air. Sue could feel blood flew down her leg. Within seconds, the deer had pushed her off the road.

When Alexis and her father pulled up, the deer was throwing Sue like a doll. The woman looked very frightened. Alexis quickly jumped out of the car and ran toward the deer. She kicked it hard to get its attention. Then her father, who had followed his daughter, pushed the deer away from the woman.

Alexis helped Sue into the car, and then used a piece of cloth to wrap (包扎) Sue’s injured leg. “We’re going to get you to a hospital,” Alexis said. Then she heard her father shout loudly. He had been knocked to the ground. Alexis took hold of a hammer from the car and ran to where her father lay on his back. She closed her eyes and beat the deer’s head and neck with all her strength, over and over. When she opened her eyes, the deer was running away. Alexis got in the driver’s seat and sped toward the nearest hospital.

After Sue was treated, she thanked Alexis with tears in her eyes. “You expect a teenage girl to get on the phone and call for help,” she said, “not to beat up a deer.”
