Aisha lived far from her school. So she always took a bus to school with her best friend, Allen. Another two of her classmates were on the same bus.
Every day the four children waited for their school bus for fifteen minutes, on the same dirty street. There were many old bottles, parts of old bikes, and empty cans everywhere around the bus stop. The trees on, the street had no leaves and seemed to be dead, and there weren’t any flowers on both sides of the street. The street looked dirty and ugly.
One Friday, Aisha looked at the dirty street and decided to do something about it. The next Monday, she took a bag and collected some of the old bottles for recycling. On Tuesday, it took her another ten minutes to pick up old bottles. Her best friend saw it and collected empty cans and put them in a different bag to recycle. On Wednesday, all the other children joined them in collecting. The street became clean!
Though the street looked cleaner but it still looked gray. So the next day the girls planted some flowers along the road. They watered them, and watered the trees there, too. Even though the children only had ten minutes a day to do so, that was enough.
Half a year later, this street became a beautiful street with many flowers and green trees. Maybe a big difference only needed ten minutes a day. All of us should spend ten minutes a day helping our cities become cleaner and greener.

In many parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join environment clubs. In an environment club, people work together to keep the environment clean.
Here are the things students often do.
Save the water! Do you know that some toilets can waste twenty to forty tons of water an hour? In a year, that would fill a small river. In environment clubs, students repair those broken toilets.
No-car day. On a no-car day, nobody comes to school in a car, neither the students nor the teachers. Cars will cause air pollution. So remember: walk, jump, bike or run. Use your legs! There’s lots of fun!
No-garbage(fit) lunches. How much litter do you throw away after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will choose the classes that make the least garbage to report to the whole school!

In many countries today, people are doing something to protect wild animals so that they can be safe.
In India the need for such protection was understood centuries ago. About 300B. C. an Indian writer told people something about forests. The forests of those days were a bit like national parks today. The sport of killing animals was carefully controlled(控制). That was to say, people couldn’t kill animals freely. Our world is becoming better and better. Though many people waste natural resources(资源), some people still come up with many ways to protect our environment and save energy.
For example, in America, some farmers have a new way of using cow wastes. They use them to produce electricity.
Let me say something about it. A big machine moves back and forth clearing the floor. The machine pushes the manure(粪肥) into a big tank like a small swimming pool. The tank is called a digester(化粪池). Bacteria(细菌) get to work and continue to break up the manure. A “greenhouse” gas keeps heat just like a greenhouse. The gas causes our planet to warm up. But the digester has a good result. People can keep and use the gas to power electric generators(发电机). They can not only help farmers deal with cow wastes but also help farmers earn much money.
