文章大意:本文讲的是春节就要到了,托马斯很着急,他不知道要去哪里,要去看望谁,要去做什么。他没有很多钱,因此也做不了很多事,于是他坐下来写了他能做的事情。

Thomas was worried. Spring holiday was coming, but he didn’t know what to do. Where would he go? Who would he see? What would he do? He didn’t have much money, so he couldn’t do a lot.

Should he go to an amusement park? Should he try to get a cheap plane ticket to visit his grandma? Should he go out to have fun with friends? It was so hard to decide. He sat down and wrote down the things he could do. Then he thought about the good and bad parts of each idea. After that, he tried to see the price of each choice.

Amusement park:

•GOOD: fun; exciting; good for taking photos; not far away

•BAD: only one day; not cheap; hot outside

•COST: $75-$100

Fly to see Grandma:

•GOOD: grandma’s cooking; fun; stay there for a few days

•BAD: not very exciting; plane ride can be long; expensive

•COST: $200-$300

Go out with friends:

•GOOD: fun to see friends; can be cheap; every day is different

•BAD: can only do that on the weekend; can’t go anywhere special

•COST: $0-$50

When he finished writing, the choice was clear. He would go to the amusement park first, but he shouldn’t spend too much money there. Then, he would call his grandma and see if he could visit her in summer. After that, he would go out with his friends for a few days. He was sure he would have a great spring holiday.

文章大意:本文主要讲述了作者和Ginny去街上找地方吃午饭时,遇到一个年轻的男士Juan Mann,当他父母离婚时,他孤独和难过并决定去街上给需要安慰的人免费的拥抱的故事。

One day, Ginny and I met a young man when we were walking down the street to look for a place to have lunch.

“Do you want a hug?” he asked Ginny.

“Sure!” Ginny smiled and walked up to him. She reached up and hugged him with all the love she had in her heart.

“Oh! This is the best hug I’ve had all day!” he said.

The young man is Juan Mann. After living in Europe for several years, he returned to Sydney. At that time, his parents were getting a divorce (离婚). He shut himself away at home and did nothing for months. Alone and sad, Juan decided to make a difference. He made a sign that read “Free Hugs” and stood at the Pitt Street Mall to provide hugs for anyone who needed comfort.

At first, he was really nervous and expected to be laughed at. But fifteen minutes later, the coming of a woman changed his mind. “My dog died today, ” she said. “It’s also the first anniversary(周年纪念)of my only daughter’s death. Can you give me a hug?” It was more than a hug. It meant something to her, Juan recalled.

After that day, Juan wondered if others were doing the same thing. Soon, he found Amma in India, Jason in Atlanta, and Jayson in New York. When the huggers work, most people just pay no attention to them or shake their heads, but those who open their arms in return always walk away with a smile.

文章大意:本文主要说明了研究人员已经发现证据证明树木实际很聪明,它们通过真菌网络共享我们脚下的资源,母树还利用这个网络来帮助它们的后代,以此来证明树木的重要性。

There’s nothing better than a walk in the countryside for lifting our spirits. Connecting with nature can help our mental health. For many people, it feels great to take a walk through a forest, but as we admire the trees around us, it’s worth knowing these trees are doing more than just being nice things to look at.

We have already noticed that trees play an important role in taking care of our world—they produce oxygen and clean the air we breathe by taking in about a quarter of all human-caused carbon dioxide emissions(二氧化碳排放).

But there’s more to these trees than we might think. Researchers have discovered that they are actually very smart.

It’s thought that trees use a fungal network(真菌网络)to talk and share resources right under our feet. Under the ground are tree roots, bacteria(细菌)and super fine threads of fungi(菌丝). And research has shown that they are all mixed together. They can help each other by sharing “food”, and they can even tell them some coming dangers. Scientists say it’s like the trees are talking to one another.

Ecologist(生态学家)Suzanne Simard has called this network the Wood Wide Web. She discovered that parent trees use this network to help their children. She also found that trees are smart enough to change their behaviour to live in a changing environment.

So it seems trees really are the stars of our natural world, and with around three trillion of them on our planet, it’s time to show them some respect if we want them to grow better.

11. The trees can take in about ________ carbon dioxide emissions caused by human.
A.10%B.25%C.50%D.75%

A.human-caused emissionsB.underground tree roots

C.An ecologist helps people with mental problems.D.An ecologist does some research about plants.
14. We may read this passage in the ________ section of a newspaper.
A.Animal WorldB.Amazing PlantsC.Business InformationD.Sports Stars
15. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?
A.Trees are actually very smart to live on the earth.
B.Trees provide resources for people in the world.
C.Connecting with nature can help our mental health.
D.Trees are in danger because of a changing environment.
