1 . What should we do if one of our classmates suddenly falls ill or gets hurt? Here are some steps for first aid (急救). But remember to look for medical care after first aid if the wound (伤口) is serious.
Broken bones (骨头): Take away clothing from the wound. Use an ice pack (冰袋). Don’t move the hurt body part while waiting for the doctor to arrive.
Animal bites (动物咬伤): Wash the bite area with soap and water. Pack the wound with a clean cloth if it is bleeding. If the bleeding has stopped, cover the area with a bandage and take the person to the hospital. Make sure you remember what kind of animal it is, so the doctor can find the right way to treat him or her at once.
Fainting: Don’t move the body. Make sure he or she can breathe and take in fresh air. Clean the person’s face with a cool cloth.
Nosebleeds: Let the person sit up with his or her head tilted forward a little. Do not let the person tilt his or her head back because this may cause heavy breathing or coughing. Pinch the lower part of the nose for at least 10 minutes.

2 . April 20, 2024, Saturday
It was a normal morning and my parents went to work as usual, I was left at home with my little brothers Boo and Seven. Suddenly, Boo shouted that Seven was choking (窒息).
I remembered a first-aid video I’d seen, showing what to do if a little one is choking. I decided to have a try accordingly. I leaned (使斜靠) Seven over my arm and started hitting him on the back, between his shoulder blades (肩胛). My heart was in my mouth, but I was trying to keep clam because Boo was watching. I phoned 120. I continued to give Seven back blows while I was speaking to the operator (接线员). The operator told me that I was doing the right thing and to continue doing it. Finally, Seven coughed up a piece of apple and started breathing again.
When the hospital workers arrived, they took Seven to the hospital for a full check by the doctors. After they’d examined him carefully, they said he was fine. They told me if I hadn’t acted quickly and if I hadn’t known what to do, we wouldn’t have taken him home that day.

Since attending the training, Kate has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She was able to stop the bleeding and bandage the wound herself. She even taught some of the other students who could not take part in the training as well as her younger cousins some of the skills she learned. “The training is important, ”Kate said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Georgia Roy is a paramedic (急救员). She spoke to Craig Jackson from Out and About magazine.
Craig: What’s it like to work as a paramedic, Georgia?
Georgia: Every day is different, because we get so many different calls for help. We might go to a car accident or to a house where someone is sick. Some days are very busy and some days are quiet. Sometimes we work during the day and sometimes we work at night. I always work with a partner—another paramedic. When we get a call from someone, we get into the ambulance (救护车) and drive to them as quickly as we can. We use the siren to tell other drivers to move out of our way.
Craig: What makes a good paramedic?
Georgia: You have to be good at talking to people. You have to stay calm and quickly find out what their problem is. Sometimes we can help them, but usually we have to take them to the hospital.
Craig: What do you do in between the calls?
Georgia: When we’re not out on the road, my partner and I check the ambulance and the equipment.

Debbie and her sister Ellen ran to their house to find 6-year-old Dylan bleeding heavily from a large cut in his arm.
Amy was looking after Dylan when their mum Jane went shopping. Dylan fell when running through the house, accidentally cutting his arm through a glass door.
Luckily, Debbie took a first aid (急救) class not long ago and knew what to do. “I knew I needed to do something to stop the bleeding. I got a towel (毛巾) from the shower room and pressed it on the cut,” she said.
