Orion, a 12-year-old boy, is much the same as other teenagers. But one thing makes him different from others: Orion leads activities that do good things for people. In 2021, Orion entered a speech competition. In his speech, he said, “Kindness is a virtue (美德) we can all have, if we’re willing to. So why not start today?” Orion did what he said. He used his $500 prize money from the competition to buy toys for patients at a children’s hospital in his town. To encourage others to give away toys to local hospitals, he began the first of his “Race to Kindness” activities—the “Race to 500 Toys”. He didn’t stop there. Seeing people suffer from hunger in his community, Orion worked with a charity group and collected more than 100,000 meals for local families. Orion’s passion (热衷的事情) for helping others is more than that. According to a 2022 survey in the US, many teachers and parents said that kids couldn’t get printed books and it was their biggest worry. “Many people living here can’t get any books. It breaks my heart,” Orion said. He held some events to encourage people to give away new or used books. He reached his goal of collecting 500,000 books in just a few months. Orion says his purpose in life is to reduce pain wherever he sees it. “When people come together for a common purpose, great things can happen,” Orion believes. |

Dear Miss Black,
请阅读下面这篇短文,根据所提供的信息,回答下列问题。
How was your sleep last night? World Sleep Day falls on March 21st every year. How can we have healthy sleep? Take a look at these two tips.
◆Waking up naturally
Waking up to a ringing alarm is never fun. Studies showed that when you get “shocked” by the alarm, your breathing will go up from 16 to 24 breaths per minute. Your heart will have 10 more beats every minute. Your blood pressure (血压) will rise.
“This is a very unhappy way to start the day,” sleep scientist Whitney Roman told the online magazine Bustle. You’ll feel worse if you fall back to get a few more minutes of sleep. “This will mess up your body’s natural sleep-wake cycle,” said Roman.
So, what should we do? Try to choose an alarm with softer and lower sounds. Or leave part of the curtains (窗帘) open—the rising sun will wake you up.
◆Sleep early, get up early
Some young people may go to bed late and get up late, such as sleeping from 2 a.m. to 10 a. m. They think as long as they have 8 hours of sleep, everything will be fine.
But in fact, our bodies can tell time. They use light and temperature to do so. If we wake up too late, our bodies might feel stuck (被困的) between sleep and being awake. That’s why sometimes we feel even more tired after oversleeping.
1. When is World Sleep Day every year?2. What will happen to your heart if you are awoken by an alarm?
3. Which alarm should people choose?
4. Why do some young people go to bed late and get up late?
5. How can our bodies tell time?

An Experience of Illness
By Li Ming
As we all know, it is important to pay attention to our health.
Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith got the call every parent fears. Their 20-month-old son, Mike Smith, fell into a swimming pool at the daycare. He was underwater for about 5 minutes. When he was finally pulled out of the water, he had no pulse (脉搏) and was technically dead.
Mike was sent to a small hospital. Dr. Nathan Taylor says that everyone dropped everything and came to help. Mike’s body temperature was very low when he arrived. Everyone from doctors to nurses and other workers took turns doing CPR on the boy for almost three hours. The whole time they had help on the line from the team in London. Dr. Jap, from London Health Sciences Center, was on the phone guiding the team. When the child’s body temperature rose and his heart started beating on its own, he was sent to London Victoria Hospital.
Two weeks later, Mike walked out of the hospital on his own two feet. “We are going home today!” his mother said. “This little boy has surprised so many. They don’t know how he’s become so well and so fast. Mike is a little fighter,” a family friend said.
The family recently paid a visit to the doctors, nurses to express thanks for saving Mike’s life. These great medical workers really helped turn a would-be sad story into a wonderful recovery! Well done, everyone!

An Experience of First Aid
First-aid skills play an important role in our daily life.
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Some parents may have trouble getting their kids away from phones and outside during the holidays. But for one Virginia family, this wasn’t a big deal. Josh and Cassie Sutton finished a full-length hike with their son, Harvey.
The family spent 209 days walking thousands of miles to finish the whole Appalachian Trail, which is simply called the AT. Harvey was just 4 years old when they started, and celebrated his 5th birthday during the long travel.
To build up Harvey’s body and mind, Josh and Cassie Sutton have been hiking with him since he was two. They prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes.
The AT is a 2,180-mile hiking trip that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains. The amount(数量) of up and down on the trip is about the same as climbing up and down Mount Qomolangma (the world’s highest mountain) 16 times. Only one out of every four hikers finishes the trip.
But that didn’t stop Harvey and his family. During his days on the trip, Harvey played games with his parents. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun. They also made friends with other hikers. Harvey enjoyed the hard work of hiking. “My favorite part was rock climbing. It was really hard but fun,” he said.
Hiking the Appalachian Trail taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to go through difficulties together. Because of the experience, they are closer than ever before. Harvey said, “I want to hike it again in the future.”

5. What did Harvey and his parents learn from the hiking?

I have a friend named Rachel. She is a very kind girl. She always helps others. Rachel has a special job—making candles. However, she lives a poor(贫困的)and hard life, because she can’t make much money through this job.
But Rachel never feels sad about it. She thinks that she can use candles to make others happy. When Rachel is free, she often uses old candles to make a new one. Rachel also draws some lovely pictures on the candles. In this way, her candles are different from the candles in the shops. Rachel usually gives others one candle at a time. Though a candle is not expensive, Rachel thinks it is the best way to show her love and care to others.
Every time when someone visits her, Rachel would give him or her a candle. So as a friend of Rachel, I have many wonderful candles at home. When I feel sad, I would light up(点燃)a candle. The yellow candlelight makes me feel much better.

But he never gives up. Now Nick has his own speaking company: Attitude Is Attitude. He shares with people the importance of dreaming big. He says attitude is the most powerful tool in the life and failure is just a learning experience. |
Lin Tao: In my opinion, Mark Zuckerberg, the boss of Facebook, is a hero. He is only 37 this year. In only 14 years, Zuck turned his small website into a world famous network. Zuck once wrote to his workmates, “We don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services.” |
Wang Qiang: Jeremy Lin is my hero. His excellent performance in basketball courts has attracted the eyes of both Americans and Chinese.
