What should we do if one of our classmates suddenly falls ill or gets hurt? Here are some steps for first aid (急救). But remember to look for medical care after first aid if the wound (伤口) is serious.
Broken bones (骨头): Take away clothing from the wound. Use an ice pack (冰袋). Don’t move the hurt body part while waiting for the doctor to arrive.
Animal bites (动物咬伤): Wash the bite area with soap and water. Pack the wound with a clean cloth if it is bleeding. If the bleeding has stopped, cover the area with a bandage and take the person to the hospital. Make sure you remember what kind of animal it is, so the doctor can find the right way to treat him or her at once.
Fainting: Don’t move the body. Make sure he or she can breathe and take in fresh air. Clean the person’s face with a cool cloth.
Nosebleeds: Let the person sit up with his or her head tilted forward a little. Do not let the person tilt his or her head back because this may cause heavy breathing or coughing. Pinch the lower part of the nose for at least 10 minutes.

Garbage sorting (垃圾分类) began on July 1, 2019. However, I live in my building with the other 238 families and we live with a similar system (系统) for years. Here, I’d like to talk about our experiences.
In October 2016, the government (政府) chose our neighborhood to be part of a pilot (试点的) program for garbage sorting. To help the program run successfully, we set up a volunteer team. I am one of the volunteers. However, several of us didn’t know if we could lead people in the building to change their habits.
We began with the usual ways. We handed out notices around the neighborhood. We also went door to door to tell people how to sort garbage. However, they made many mistakes. For example, many didn’t know wet rubbish meant food waste. Instead, they thought it meant rubbish that was wet. Some even refused to sort their garbage.
As a result, we volunteers had to do lots of sorting ourselves. At the same time, we went around explaining the rules. We kept talking to those people who refused to sort their garbage. We let them know we could help to sort garbage for them. It was a matter of time and patience. We believed they would finally change their mind.
Six months later, we were successful in changing people’s mind. People in my building began sorting their garbage. Some even joined us to help us.
I think face-to-face talks played an important role. Sometimes, these talks led to conflicts, but they were much more effective (有效的) than handing out notices. It was interesting to see what happened. I hope everyone knows garbage sorting is good for them.

Chris is not a traditional explorer (探险家)—he usually works in an office for a large organization (组织). However, Chris’ job can be just as exciting and dangerous as being an explorer. Chris works for MSF, an organization also known as Doctors without borders. In 1971, MSF began to send trained doctors all over the world to help people who have suffered from disasters such as wars and illness. Chris is a doctor from France who has traveled to many places to organize programs that help people .
At the moment, over 2,700 trained doctors took part in MSF projects. The organization received the Nobel Peace Prize (诺贝尔和平奖) in 1999. All kinds of doctors can volunteer for MSF. They need to be ready to go to almost anywhere in the world and, of course, they should face difficulties. Most of MSF’s work is in Arica. When MSF choose a doctor for a task (任务), they have to go for at least six months. When doctors finish a few tasks, they might be sent to an emergency (紧急的) task after a disaster, such as an earthquake.
But why would doctors leave a comfortable life and a good pay to join MSF? According to Chris, the experience they have is a great help in their life. What’s more, just like the explorers of the past, they need to keep an open mind learn to get on well with the people they meet. One thing that they can say at the end of any task is that they have made a difference to people’s lives.
