Georgia Roy is a paramedic (急救员). She spoke to Craig Jackson from Out and About magazine.
Craig: What’s it like to work as a paramedic, Georgia?
Georgia: Every day is different, because we get so many different calls for help. We might go to a car accident or to a house where someone is sick. Some days are very busy and some days are quiet. Sometimes we work during the day and sometimes we work at night. I always work with a partner—another paramedic. When we get a call from someone, we get into the ambulance (救护车) and drive to them as quickly as we can. We use the siren to tell other drivers to move out of our way.
Craig: What makes a good paramedic?
Georgia: You have to be good at talking to people. You have to stay calm and quickly find out what their problem is. Sometimes we can help them, but usually we have to take them to the hospital.
Craig: What do you do in between the calls?
Georgia: When we’re not out on the road, my partner and I check the ambulance and the equipment.
Craig: What’s the best thing about your job?
Georgia: I just like giving help to people when they need it most. Once a woman had a baby in the ambulance. That was amazing!

Chinese fans have got a taste of his live show, as he performed in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Beijing early April, 2018.
But many people don't know much about Blunt besides his music. Before taking up music as a career, Blunt served in the British Army, reaching the rank of captain(上尉军衔). That's why his nickname is the "captain poet".
He served in a unit(部队)known as the Life Guards. His duty was to guard the royal family on important occasions(场合). He once joked that the most famous person he knew was Queen Elizabeth. He said, “I don't have her private phone number or anything, but I was in her company a lot.”
Before becoming a captain, he was also sent to join the activities of keeping the peace by armies in Kosovo. He took his guitar with him.
"Whenever you are in the army, you take something to keep yourself amused(愉悦的). Some bring a pack of cards, some a football, I took a guitar," Blunt told the Herald-Times.
His wartime experience inspired him to write. When he was in Kosovo, he wrote the anti-war(反战)song No Bravery. Even to this day, Blunt remains an outspoken(直言不讳)supporter for army veterans(老兵), particularly those who return home wounded.
Blunt’s music career took off after he returned from war. From the war-torn streets of Kosovo to the biggest live music halls in the world, Blunt has come a long way.

If you see someone feint(晕倒), perhaps as a result of a heart attack, what can you do while you wait for the doctors?
Chen Wenchu set a good example when he was 14. He performed CPR on a cleaner at his school, saving the man’s life in 2018. Chen showed that knowing how to perform CPR can be very important. According to medical experts, there is a “golden period”, the first four minutes of a heart attack, when CPR is most effective in saving the person’s life.
In 2020, the Ministry of Education(教育部)asked all public schools to provide the first-aid(急救)courses including CPR as part of health education. CPR is not hard to learn. However, only less than 1% of Chinese adults have mastered it, while many have never heard of it.
A 2019 survey noted that although 64.6% of schools have opened health education courses, the teaching results are not satisfactory.
Zhao Sheng, a graduate from a Shandong high school, talked about her first CPR training in class. “No model, video or practice was included. I realized the acts I had been taught had lots of errors after I was trained another time in a medical school,” she said.
Ding Han, a doctor from Guangdong, is a strong supporter for bringing first-aid knowledge into the classroom, “The first-aid course in schools is key for its popularization(普及)”, said Ding.
Many countries have worked hard for the popularization of first-aid training, including CPR. In the USA, policemen, firefighters and school teachers must receive CPR training. And a 2017 survey showed that 65 percent of Americans had received CPR training. In Switzerland, all citizens are asked to be trained in first aid, including CPR. In Germany, every citizen must be trained before getting their driver’s license, which means about 80 percent of the country has received first-aid training. Forty percent of people in France are also trained in first aid.
Just as an old Chinese saying goes, “Stones from other hills may serve to polish the jade of this one(它山之石可以攻玉).” ▲

The first thing to do is to do some research. Try to learn what kind of disasters once hit your city. Find out how people saved themselves after those disasters.
