Schools are supposed to be safe places for children. Sadly, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) (国际红十字委员会) has seen accidents happen in schools from time to time. For this reason, the ICRC began its education programme in 2017. First-aid (急救) training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Kate is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor. She lives in New York. She took part in ICRC’s first-aid training in spring of 2021. One important lesson she learned was that in dangerous situations everyone must take care of themselves first before helping others. Since attending the training, Kate has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She was able to stop the bleeding and bandage the wound herself. She even taught some of the other students who could not take part in the training as well as her younger cousins some of the skills she learned. “The training is important, ”Kate said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about first aid. Now we can carry out some of the techniques correctly in different situations.”
Thanks to the ICRC’s first-aid training, many students and teachers, like Kate, have become professional (专业的) first aiders.

Milk. It was Amy’s turn to get it. Amy sighed and shut her first-aid(急救) book.
Amy tied the cow close to a tree. Somewhere down the mountain, some volunteer doctors were teaching medical skills to village nurses. Amy heard Betty drive off hours ago. “She should have taken me with her. She thinks I’m too young,” Amy thought. “But she’s wrong. I am already 15!”
Amy carried the milk back to Mama, and then wandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, was trying to stand on a horse’s back. “No wonder they don’t trust kids with anything important,” Amy thought.
She had just turned away when she heard a heavy fall and a few cries. Roy was on the ground. “Roy!” The kids nearby ran towards him. “Get Betty,” one said. Amy shook her head. “Betty’s gone to the city.”
The kids didn’t know what to do. Amy ran to Roy and saw one of his legs out of shape. A broken leg! She remembered what the first-aid book said about it.
“Victor!” Amy called to one of the boys. “Go get Roy’s mama, and find someone with a truck.” She turned to the others. “Give me your shirts. We need something to tie his leg with.”
Amy then found a strong, straight stick. She carefully wrapped the shirts around Roy’s leg and the stick. Roy cried out in pain. “I know it hurts,” Amy said softly. “But this will hold it still until you get to the hospital.”
When Amy was done, she looked up and saw Roy’s mama and a man watching beside a truck. “Thank you, Amy,” Roy’s mama said. Amy helped them lift Roy into the truck, and then they drove down the hillside towards the hospital.
The next day, Betty came to Amy’s home. “I heard what you did,” Betty said. “You kept your head in an emergency. That’s an important skill.”
Amy’s face turned red. “I was afraid...”
Betty shook her head. “It’s OK for a nurse to be afraid, as long as she has a clear head. The volunteer doctors are coming tomorrow with vaccines(疫苗). We need some more hands. Can you help?”
“I’d love to,” Amy replied at once.
“Come early, then. There is a lot to learn.” Amy smiled. “I’ll bring my first-aid book.”

They also had this false sense of pride that created this feeling of shame in doing small jobs. So by the time I gained conscience, we were shit poor. Getting bread with some vegetables on the plate, twice a day, was a dream. From early age, I used to work on farms with my mother. After 9, I started working at a whole lot of places before I entered high school.
I used to get old books from my cousin, Pappu, who was one class ahead of me in school. I was above average in my class. But all that work for food, bad neighborhood, and lack of resources (time, stationery, school uniform etc.) affected my education badly. By the time I came in 10th Grade, I got 46% marks in the exams. But my failure was actually a gift. My friend-circle was gone and everything was meaningless to me. I had that talk with myself that made me realize that nothing mattered except a good education. One of my uncles guided me in this tough time.
Poverty made me rock solid. When people are usually scared about something, I drink some tea and carry on. While so many people around me feel ashamed to talk to rickshaw pullers (黄包车夫),it gives me much pleasure to talk to them. I speak politely with rickshaw pullers, farmers, waiters and all those people trying to earn a living in tough economy. I think they are hard-working people. Still, I think carefully about buying costly devices, drinking a lot, and doing something useless to impress my "friends".
That doesn't mean I am a miser. For me, only few things are worth my hard-earned money. For example, I am living at a great place for which I pay more than average rent because it's so beautiful and peaceful.

Once upon a time a little leaf was heard to cry, as leaves often did when a gentle wind passed by. The twig (小枝) asked, “what’s the matter, little leaf?” The leaf said, “The wind just told me that one day it will pull me off!” When the tree heard this, it swung all over and promised the leaf, “You will not go till you want to.”
The sunny days of the autumn came. The little leaf saw all the leaves around becoming very beautiful. Some were yellow, some were red, and some were in both colors. The little leaf asked the tree what it meant. The tree said, “All these leaves ________ fly away and they have put on these beautiful colors because of joy.”
The little leaf wanted to go, and grew very beautiful in thinking of it. When it was very bright in color, it saw the branches (树枝) of the tree had no color in them. The leaf asked, “Branches, why are you brown?” “We must keep our working clothes on. Your clothes are for holiday, because your tasks are over,” said a branch.
Just then a little puff of wind came, took the leaf up and turned it over and over. The little leaf was like the fire in the air, and fell down silently among hundreds of other leaves. It began to dream — a dream so beautiful that perhaps it would last forever.

That’s why the global nonprofit(不盈利的) organization, TEACH, which stands for Together Educating All Children in Hospitals, appeared.
Seven years ago, students from 15 universities volunteered in about 30 hospitals around the world to bring an educational program to sick children, which helps develop their interest in science and nature. And most importantly, they cheered up the sick children and made a big different to their lives.
Isaac Snyder, TEACH Executive Director, said that it’s heart-warming to watch the older students help the sick children with some of the more useful activities, such as engineering experiments(实验). Unlike other programs, the program of TEACH makes children experience more than just reading coloring books, watching movies or playing online games. It teaches kids how science can be used for their own health problems. Besides cheering up kids to see science in a new light, it helps kids understand the health problems that are putting them in the hospital. “It can make sick children not be afraid and help them have a positive attitude(积极态度) towards science,” Isaac explained.
Isaac knows TEACH can also cheer up volunteers to start a new life in medicine. Take Isaac as an example. Though Isaac started out as just a volunteer, he finally studied medicine and made a difference to the lives of sick children. When people asked Isaac, “What did he see as those sick children joined in the program of TEACH ?” he shared, “The parents told the volunteers that this was the first time their children had smiled in days, and they were so happy.”

The ICRC also has a branch in China—Red Cross Society of China (RCSC). It started in 1904. Most people in RCSC are either full-time workers or volunteers. Now RCSC has about 26 million members.
