When things around the house stop working, what do you usually do with them? If you’re like a lot of people, you probably just throw them away.
This trend (趋势) has caused the throwaway culture. There are many reasons for it. In some areas, it’s difficult to find people who can make repairs, and fixing things can be quite expensive. Also, some small appliances (电器) are so cheap that it’s often easier to just buy a new one.
In 2009, Martine Postma from the Netherlands came up with a better way: Repair Cafes, where people can get broken items (物品) repaired. There they will find tools and volunteer experts who are ready to help with repairs for free. Postma’s first Repair Cafe opened on Oct. 18, 2009 in Amsterdam. It was a huge success.
Today, there are about 2, 000 Repair Cafes around the world. They not only provide help with repairs, but also improve community relationship. Neighbors get to know one another as they work together on projects. Besides, valuable knowledge is preserved and passed along. Items are also kept and reused rather than thrown away, meaning less litter. If a broken item weighs a kilo, it’s been predicted that 2, 000 Repair Cafes prevent 35, 000 kilos of litter every month. That adds up to about 420, 000 kilos per year!
Ginko Lee is the organizer for a repair group in Pasadena, California. In an interview, she told how exciting it was watching people who really wanted to help one another. She often hears visitors say, “This is the kind of world I want to live in!” Ms. Lee describes the mission of Repair Cafes best in the following words, “Everyone is a giver and a receiver.”
29. What is NOT a cause of the throwaway culture?A.The cost of fixing things can be high. |

A.更新 | B.保存 | C.测试 |
A.Because people open their own Repair Cafes. |

Caopu Primary School is in a village in the Qingshuihe area, many of whose students come from migrant workers’(外出务工人员) families. The school recently became popular in Chinese media after it was named one of the 10 model schools in art education in Shenzhen, thanks to its successful teaching of recorder (竖笛) playing. Xu Chunsheng, headmaster of the school, believes that art education can bring warmth to those students because their parents are too busy making a living to take care of them.
The school has chosen to teach the recorder since this instrument is easy to learn and affordable. It has taken the three music teachers Xu Guang, Chen Haiyan and Zhao Yonggang many hours to research teaching methods. To better teach the students, the three teachers also attended training programs during their vacations. All 1,300 students at the school can play the recorder. In order not to influence study, first-and second-graders take a training each week and three-to six-graders play the recorder for 15 minutes of each music class.
Efforts finally paid off. The students have shined at several art festivals citywide. Since the students were taught recorder playing in 2016, the school has won several first prizes in art performance competitions. And what is more important is that music has enriched the lives of students and planted confidence (自信心) in them.
Lu Zitong, a second-grader, brought her recorder with her when forced into a week-long quarantine (隔离) with her family. Her playing cheered everyone up in the quarantined building. Another student, who had been lonely and unhappy, has become more confident since joining the recorder playing club and winning a prize with his classmates.

Want to have a cold drink during summer? “Ouch!” Suddenly your teeth begin to ache. If eating ice-cream or drinking cold drinks makes your teeth hurt, it could be a kind of protein (蛋白质) called TRPC5 at play.
A new study done by an international scientists team came out on March 26, 2021. It answered a long-lasting question about teeth. Why do cold food and drinks make our teeth hurt? Actually, it means that our tooth enamel(牙轴质), where the TRPC5 is, might have been broken. The research team discovered this protein 15 years ago, but they didn’t know which part of the tooth could feel the change of temperature. Now they know it—it’s in the tooth enamel.
David Clapham from the research team explained how the teeth sense cold. When someone is eating ice-cream, for example, cells(细胞) with TRPC5 in teeth feel a change in temperature and then send information to the brain. The team also found that there is more TRPC5 in bad teeth. That is why people with bad teeth are more sensitive(敏感的) to cold food and drinks. So we should protect our teeth.

The study also explained why clove oil, a centuries-old treatment for toothache, may deal with tooth pain—It can prevent the TRPC5 protein from sending information to the brain.
“Toothache has long been a problem,” Clapham said. “But it is important and it influences a lot of people. Toothache is nothing until you get it.” The researchers believed this study could help develop more useful medicines for toothache.
