Mrs. Jones was over eighty, but she still drove her old car like a woman half her age. She loved driving very fast, and was proud of the fact that she had never, in her thirty-five years of driving, been punished (被惩罚) for a driving offence (犯规,犯法).
Then one day she nearly lost her record. A police car followed her, and the policemen in it saw her pass a red light without stopping. Of course, she was stopped. It seemed certain that she would be punished.
When Mrs. Jones came up to the judge (法官), he looked at her seriously and said that she was so old to drive a car, and that the reason why she had not stopped at the red light was most probably that her eyes had become weak with old age, so that she had simply not seen it.
When the judge had finished what he was saying, Mrs. Jones opened the big handbag she was carrying and took out her sewing (针线). Without saying a word, she chose a needle with a very small eye, and threaded it at once.
When she had successfully done this, she took the thread out of the needle again and handed both the needle and the thread to the judge, saying, “Now it is your turn. I suppose you drive a car, and that you are quite sure about your own eyesight.”
The judge took the needle and tried to thread it. After half a dozen tries, he had still not succeeded. Mrs. Jones’ record was still unbroken.

Summer is coming. When it’s too hot outside, it is true that you want to drink cold water. Cold water can keep you cool, right? Well, that is wrong. A new study showed you’d better have a hot drink like tea and coffee on hot days. Scientists found that a hot drink can cool you down, but only on dry and hot days.
How can a hot drink cool you down in hot weather? Here is how it works. When you have a hot drink you start sweating too much. If the sweat is able to go away, it will take away some heat (热量) from body, and then you will start to feel cooler. Therefore, when you have a hot drink, less heat is stored inside your body. Try to experience like this next time. Just have a hot drink at a park in a T-shirt and shorts, and you are sure to get cooler! This may also explain why people take hot showers in summer and feel cooler after that.
However, hot drinks don’t work all the time. On a very wet and rainy day, if you’re wearing a lot of clothes, it’s best to have cold drinks.
26. According to the new study, you should drink _________ to cool you down on hot days.A.warm milk | B.cold drinks | C.hot tea | D.ice beer |

Eco-friendly lifestyle in Denmark
Everyone can help save natural resources by cycling. Even nature recycles (循环). When plants and animals die, they fertilize (使肥沃) the soil or, after many centuries, become coal and oil. Denmark (丹麦) is one of the greenest countries in the world. It is well-known for recycling waste.
People in Denmark take recycling seriously. Newspapers are printed on recycled paper. Stores collect a deposit every time you buy a bottled drink. When you return the empty bottle, you get your deposit back. The bottle will be cleaned and reused. To reduce (减少) food waste, there is a food waste supermarket where people can buy the nearly-expired (快过期的) food at a low price.
Cycling has always been a Danish tradition. The government encourages the use of bicycles instead of cars. There are good bicycle paths with road signs and traffic lights all over the country. In the capital city Copenhagen, there are over 2,000 bicycles that can be borrowed for free in public squares and train stations. Don’t be surprised if you find fewer cars on road because cars are heavily taxed (对……征税) in Denmark.
Denmark has been a wind energy leader for a long time. Nearly 42 percent of Denmark’s electricity (电) is produced by wind power.
Denmark sets a good example for other countries, one that we should all follow.
