①Many years ago, there lived a very rich man. He wanted to do something for the people in his town. But first he wanted to find out if they were good enough to get his help. So he put a very big stone in the middle of the main road into town. Then he hid(躲藏)behind a tree and waited.

②Soon an old man came along with his cow. “Who put this stone in the middle of the road?” said the old man, but he didn't want to move the stone away. He passed around the stone and went on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing. Then another came,and another. All of them complained(抱怨)about the stone in the middle of the road, but none of them want to move it away.

③Later in the afternoon, a young man came along. He saw the stone and said, “It is very dark at night. Some people come along later in the dark and they may fall because of the stone.”

④Then the young man began to move the stone.He pulled very hard to move it to one side. But to his surprise, when he moved the stone away, he found a bag full of money and this message under the stone. It said, “The money is for the warm-hearted man who can take this stone away from the road. Thank you.”

Everyone knows that Hawaii is a beautiful group of island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. But did you know that “Hawaii” is both the name of the state(洲)and the name of the biggest island in the state? So most people call the island of Hawaii the “Big Island”.

The weather on the Big Island is very interesting. It is different in different parts of the island!

The Kohala area in the north is the driest part of the island with only about 56 cm of rain a year. On the east side, Hilo gets around 320 cm of rain per year. It’s one of the wettest cities in the United States!

All that rain makes for some amazing waterfallse(瀑布)near Hilo.

Water temperatures are coldest in the February and warmest in September and October. There is good snorkeling, great scuba diving, and wonderful fishing year-round. That makes the Big Island popular with people from all over the world any time of the year.

①There is a famous English saying, “You are what you eat”. It means that what you put in your mouth will become part of you. Many experts use it to tell people it’s important to have a good eating habit. For example, too much sweet food makes a person overweight. To avoid(避免) being fat, kids are told to keep away from sweet food. However, a team of American scientists have found something new about eating sweet food. “When we say someone is ‘sweet’, we mean they are kind and friendly. Maybe this can help us learn more about a person’s character(性格),” said Brian Meier, a scientist from the study team. “Taste is something we experience every day. What we have done is to find out if someone’s character has to do with their taste.”

②In one of their experiments(实验), students were asked questions about their character—if, for example, they were warm-hearted or not. Then they were asked to make a list of their favorite food. According to their answers, the scientists found that the students who liked sweet food were nicer.

③In another experiment, the scientists found that people who liked sweet food such as candies and chocolate were more ready to help other people in need, and those who loved non-sweet food such as eggs and chips weren’t. For example, people with a sweet tooth were more prepared to volunteer(志愿者) to clean up their city, visit sick children in the hospital and so on.

④The result of the experiments is that people’s helpfulness or being nice has something to do with their taste for sweet food. So eating sweet food is a useful way to make people nice and helpful. Next time, try some ice cream.
