I’m a virus (病毒) for the common cold. It has been a long time since I infected (感染) humans last time. Today I tried to infect a boy in a primary school all day.
His name is Sam. I waited on his desktop, and when he touched the desk I jumped on his finger. Unluckily, Sam didn’t touch his eyes, mouth or nose. Then, right after class, he washed his hands. Now I’m full of soap and sitting in a sink!
Tuesday, January 22nd
This morning I jumped into the nose of Sam’s best friend, Bill. Unluckily, the mucus (粘液) in his nose caught me. I thought it was over for me, when suddenly Bill sneezed while he was talking to Sam. I knew that would send me right into Sam’s face! However, Sam quickly gave Bill a tissue, and Bill sneezed into that instead! Infecting people is harder than I imagined.
Wednesday, January 23rd
I’m feeling very unhappy today. Some scientists caught my friend Harry and put him under a microscope. Harry is a flu virus and he’s a dangerous little guy. Besides, Sam ate all his vegetables today. He’s exercising, and he’s getting eight hours of sleep every night. His body is too strong for me!
Thursday, January 24th
I tried to infect Sam again today, but he washed his hands five times and never touched his face! He also gave tissues to every student in his class who was sneezing. It’s impossible to give him a cold! So I have to give up and I’m moving to another school.

The Nobel Prize in Literature in 2020 was awarded to American poet Louise Glück on October 8 for her “unmistakable poetic voice that with austere (朴素的) beauty makes individual existence universal,” the Nobel Academy said.
Glück, 80, is a professor of English at Yale University. She is considered one of the best poets in American contemporary literature. She is the first woman to win the prize since Poland’s Wislawa Szymborska in 1996, and the first American woman since Bob Dylan in 2016.
“My first thought was ‘I won’t have any friends,’ because most of my friends are writers. But then I thought, ‘No, that won’t happen’,” Glück jokingly said. She added that the award was “a great honor”.
Glück has been publishing poetry since 1962, when she was just 19 years old. Over the years, she has been well-known by a large number of people. Her poetry mainly pays attention to themes of childhood and family life. In 2003, she was named as the Poet Laureate of the United States.
Glück has received several celebrated honors, among them are the Pulitzer Prize in 1993 for her collection, The Wild Iris and the National Book Award in 2014. She was also awarded a National Humanities Medal in 2015 by Barack Obama at the White House.

There is no doubt that technology has had a huge influence on our lives. People from all around the world can now contact each other almost at once with mobile phones and the Internet. With this technology, it seems as if the world is more connected now than ever before.
Even so, there have been worries about technology making people feel lonely and disconnected from others around them. So, does this mean that technology makes us lonely?
I don’t think the answer is as simple as yes or no. I think it is much more complicated than that. It is true that humans need social interaction. If we depend on technology too much to communicate with others, this can negatively influence our mental health.
For me, technology is a tool. And, just like any other kind of tool-like a hammer, pencil, or ruler, for example-there is a right way and a wrong way to use it. You should use the tool in the right way or in the right place.
Take social media as an example. If you only use it to compare yourself to others, you might feel sad and lonely. But, if you use it as a tool to connect with friends and family or to start a new community to talk about your hobbies and interests, that loneliness will turn into love and friendship.
The next time you feel lonely after staring at your computer screen all day, maybe use that technology to reach out to a friend and invite them out for lunch or a coffee.
27. How does the writer lead into the topic of the text?A.By listing an example. | B.By showing his opinions. |
C.By asking a question. | D.By introducing two results. |
A.Difficult. | B.Simple. | C.Social. | D.Necessary. |
A.There is no need for us to use technology to connect with others. |
B.We have to communicate with others with the help of technology. |
C.We should use technology both in a right way and in a wrong way. |
D.Technology won’t solve loneliness unless we use it in the right way. |
A. | B. | C. | D. |
Five rules for a healthy life
Thanks to better health care, most people are living healthier and longer lives. Here are five rules for a healthy life.
Sure, it is comfortable to sit on it, but doctors say you should get off it. To keep fit, you have to walk at least 10,000 steps every day. Think about it: Do you get enough exercise today?
It is important to eat food that is fresh and natural, for example, fruit and vegetables. Fast food is not healthy. You should only have it once in a while. Eating too much of the wrong food will harm your health.
When we were babies, we slept for much of the night. Teenagers do no need as much sleep as babies, but it is important for you to get about eight hours’ sleep a night. At weekends, you have got more time, so use it not just for your friends, but for rest too.
Many people believe that it is important for our general health. Sometimes it is not easy to be a teenager because of the difficulties of school exams or friendships. If you are nervous about something, talk to your parents or your teachers.
Yes, you knew I was going to say this! It is so important. It is not cool but dangerous. It harms nearly every part of your body. Think about how your family and friends will feel and think about what it will do to your health.
A.Rest while you can! |
B.Do not worry. Be happy! |
C.Say no to smoking! |
D.Eat healthy food! |
E.Get off the sofa! |
F.Drink more fresh water! |
