Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly Before Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, NASA had a group of mathematicians(数学家)work as “Human Computers”. They used pencil and paper to do the calculations(计算)that would send rockets and astronauts into space. Hidden Figures tells the story of several great African-American women mathematicians whose work changed the world. |
Amber★☆☆☆ I like non-fiction(非虚构类读物)best and I love the subject. However, this book was just so dry. It didn’t make me feel what the lives of these women were like. |
Lauren★★★★★ The book was as amazing as the movie. I had a chance to meet the writer. It is unbelievable that we did not know about the success of these women until now. Thank Margot Lee Shetterly for introducing these heroes to us! |

One day, Steve noticed a homeless man at the train station. He took pity on him, so he gave him some money. The man thanked Steve. The next day again, Steve noticed the homeless man at the same place. This time Steve decided to get him something to eat, so he went outside the station and brought him a meal. The man thanked Steve for his kindness. But Steve got curious and asked him, “How did you get to this point?”
The homeless man looked up at him with a smile and said, “By showing love.” Steve didn’t understand it. “What do you mean by that?” he asked. The homeless man replied, “I made sure that everyone was happy. Whatever was going right or wrong in my life, I always helped everyone else.”
Steve asked him, “Do you regret it?”
“No, but it just hurts me. Here is an example. I took off my coat and handed it to a man, but he wouldn’t give me a coat when I was cold. So it is better to build your own house and invite someone in for shelter (庇护) than to give them your bricks while you are using them to build yours, because maybe one day you will be the one who is short of (缺少) bricks.”
Steve understood what the homeless man meant and thanked him for the good advice. Helping others is not a bad thing at all. But remember that sometimes sharing is better than donating. You can do more by being in a stronger position. You can’t bring yourself into a weaker situation, instead.

Mr. Utterson was sitting beside the fire one evening after dinner when he received a visit from Poole. He was very surprised to see him. “This is a surprise, Poole!” he exclaimed. Poole looked very worried but did not speak.
“Is the doctor ill?” asked Mr. Utterson.
“Mr. Utterson, there is something wrong,” said Poole.
“Sit down, Poole, and drink some wine. Then tell me what is wrong,” said Mr. Utterson. Poole sat down. “The doctor has shut himself in his workroom, and I don’t like it. I am frightened.”
“What are you afraid of?” asked Mr. Utterson. Poole did not answer the question. “I have been afraid for a week,” he said. He would not look at the lawyer (律师) but kept his eyes on the floor. Mr. Utterson could see that there was something seriously wrong.
“Please try to tell me what it is,” said Mr. Utterson, as kindly as he could.
“I don’t dare (敢) say.” replied Poole, still looking at the floor. “I think somebody has done something very bad. I can’t say any more. Please come and see for yourself.”
Mr. Utterson quickly got his hat and coat. He noticed that Poole looked less worried. It was very cold and windy. There were not many people on the street. When they arrived at the house, Poole knocked at the door. Somebody opened the door, but not very far.
“Is that you, Poole?” asked a servant (仆人).
“Yes,” answered Poole. “It’s all right. Open the door!” The door opened, and the two men went into the house.
“I hope things are not worse,” said Poole.
“I hope so, too,” agreed Mr. Utterson. They came into the hall, and Mr. Utterson was very surprised to find all the servants together around the fire.“ What are you doing here?” he asked them. “Dr. Jekyll will be annoyed. Don’t you have work to do?”
“They are all afraid, sir,” said Poole. One of the maids (女仆) began to cry . “Be quiet!” Poole told her. “Give me a candle,” he said to one of the boys. He took the candle and led Mr. Utterson toward the laboratory and the workroom.
“Please be as quiet as you can, sir,” he said. “I want you to hear what is happening. If he asks you to come in, don’t do it.”
Again, Mr. Utterson was very surprised. Why did Poole say such strange things? They went through the laboratory to the workroom. Poole knocked nervously on the door. “Mr. Utterson is here. He is asking to see you,” he said.
“Tell him that I cannot see anybody,” said a voice.
“Thank you, sir,” said Poole. He led Mr. Utterson away from the door and into the kitchen. He stopped and looked at Mr. Utterson.
“Was that Dr. Jekyll’s voice?” he asked.
“It has changed a lot,” replied Mr. Utterson. Both men were quite frightened.

ChatGPT, a smart AI chatbot (聊天机器人) is back in the headlines (新闻头条)! ______①______ Open AI, the company behind the popular chatbot, has now introduced a powerful new language model: GPT-4.
On March 14, GPT-4 showed the world how smarter it is than the previous (先前的) GPT-3.5. One of its best new features is that it can understand pictures. For example, if you show a picture of a phone using the wrong charger (充电器), GPT-4 can tell why the picture looks strange or funny.
But GPT-4’s developments don’t stop there. The new language model can code (用代码编写) classic games like Tetris (俄罗斯方块) in several minutes, and produce the code and layout (布局) for a website based on a hand-made drawing. It can also change the tone (语气) and style based on what you ask it to do. GPT-4 is much better than the older GPT at passing tests, which may worry teachers. ______②______ According to CNN, GPT-4 did really well in a law school test, with a score in the top 10 percent of test taker (考生). But GPT-3.5 only got a score in the bottom 10 percent.
GPT-4 will see greater use as a tool to power (提供动力) other apps and services. For example, the language learning app Duolingo plans to use GPT-4 in their coming Duolingo Max function (功能). Users can learn language by talking with AI. Another app, Be My Eyes, will have a digital assistant (数字助手) to help blind people better understand the world around them. ______③______
However, there are still problems with the new language model. GPT-4 still tries to get completely correct answers, especially with newer information after September 2021. ______④______ GPT-4 also sometimes “hallucinates (产生幻觉)”, meaning that it will insist that wrong information is true.
38. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.One of GPT-3.5’s best new features is that it can understand pictures. |
B.It’s very easy for GPT-4 to get newer information after September 2021. |
C.Both Duolingo and Be My Eyes use GPT-4 to help blind people. |
D.GPT-4 develops its language model and is good at tests, especially law tests. |

A.A more powerful AI chatbot | B.A new language model |
C.GPT-4’s problems | D.The tool of other apps |
