Doing experiments can be interesting, and you may try the following experiments at home. Make sure that you’ll do them with an adult.

Have you ever been in a conflict (冲突)? Do you know how to solve it? Conflict resolution is a peaceful way of trying to deal with a conflict. Both sides in the conflict explain what they think happened to cause it. The person who listens to both sides is called the mediator (调解人).

After both sides tell what they think happened to cause the conflict, they discuss ways to solve it. They try to come up with a “resolution” that both sides agree to. They cannot be angry during the communication. Everyone should use good listening and attending skills while talking. If voices get too loud or it appears that someone is angry, the mediator will speak up and have them treat each other with respect. After different suggestions are shared in how to mediate the conflict, it is time for discussing the best solution.

Conflict resolution can be used in many environments. It encourages people to tell what really happened, to share their feelings, and to work together peacefully to solve the problem.

Big data (大数据) is a lot of sets (组) of information that are put together, so they can be used by a computer program. The program looks for different kinds of answers in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources (来源), such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies and governments. One set of data can have people’s names and addresses. Another set can have what they like, where they go to school, and how much time they spend on the computer.

Big data can be used in many ways. The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so they can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. It helps them understand who buys their products. For example, one company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice cream.

Big data can be used for good reasons. Some hospitals use big data to predict (预测) if a baby who is born too early will get sick. The hospital can then take extra action to take care of that baby, so the baby does not get sick. Big data can also be used for bad reasons. It can be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.

Mary Lennox was born in India. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair. Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow and always ill in one way or another. Her father worked for the government there. He was always busy and ill himself, and her mother was a great beauty who cared only to go to parties. So Mary spent all her time with the Indian servants. She had an Ayah, a nurse, who looked after her. The Ayah’s job was to keep the little girl away from her parents as much as possible. The Ayah had to give Mary whatever she wanted and the little girl became very selfish. She loved no one, and not anyone cared for her at all. Mary wasn’t pretty like her mother. She was often ill. She never smiled and she was always cross with the servants.

One day, one of the servants died of cholera, a terrible disease. The next day three more servants died. After that the others ran away. Mary went to bed and slept for a long, long time. When she woke up the house was quiet. She called her Ayah but no one came. She got up and looked around. She was alone. The only other living thing in the house was a little snake that looked at her with eyes like jewels. She wasn’t afraid because she knew that the snake wasn’t dangerous.

Then Mary heard footsteps. She was in her room when a soldier in uniform opened the door. The man was surprised to see a little girl there. He called to another soldier outside. “Poor little girl!” said the officer. “There is no one in the house. Everyone else, including your parents, had died or fled. It was true that there was no one in the house but herself and the little rustling snake.”

After her parents’ death, Mary, the newly-orphaned child, travelled to England on a ship with a soldier’s wife. “You are going to be sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live with your uncle,” she told Mary.

I gave the young man I had rescued（救）bread and water. He was tired out and fell quickly asleep.

I guessed his age at around twenty-six. He was tall and strong and looked kind, especially when he smiled. He slept only about a half. Again he made gestures（手势）to show that he was grateful to me.

We communicated by gestures at first. Soon he showed himself much better at learning my language than I was at learning his. I told him I’m Robinson. I called him Friday, for it was on a Friday that I rescued him. He quickly learned “yes” and “no” and the names of many things.

At first, I didn’t completely trust Friday and he was separated from me in another room. But soon I found it unnecessary. Nobody would be more loyal than Friday. He seemed almost to consider me like a father. Friday was also willing to help in any way.

For the next three years, I taught Friday to use all my tools. I took him to see everything I had made. Friday was quick to help with the work on the island. One day, I showed Friday the ruin of the wreck（沉船）. I explained that I had come upon the island the same way. That was when Friday told me the most amazing thing. He saw such a wreck before, not far from his home.

“We rescue the white men from drown.” he said.

I asked him how many men they had rescued, and he showed me on his fingers—seventeen. I was surprised at the idea of a group of Europeans so close. I took Friday to the highest point of the island where other lands could be seen. He began jumping and dancing.
