I always thought homelessness was something that happened to other people. I was 24, educated. I earned $50,000 a year as a personal assistant, had a beautiful house offered by the company in California, friends and a dog. And then, one day in December last year, I lost my job because of the financial crisis (金融危机).
I became a homeless woman. A friend told me some jobless people spent nights in trailers (拖车). That seemed to be the only choice I could have, so I moved into a trailer and parked it in a Wal-Mart parking lot without running water, gas or electricity.
About 30 other people were living there in trailers. One “neighbor” used to be a doctor who spoke several languages. Another used to own three houses. We were new faces of homelessness because of the same reason.
The first night in the trailer was so unforgettable. Cold and quiet, every noise made me jump. I didn’t sleep at all and spent all night worrying someone would break in.
I spent days in a coffee shop, surfing the Internet for jobs and sending out resumes (简历). Recently I wrote to a help-website for a chance, because I believed I was “Homeless but Not hopeless”. Then the website published (出版) my letter and offered me an internship (实习期)! I’ve now been busy replying to readers’ problems and I get $ 150 a month. I’ve experienced a lot in my short lifetime, and I take their problems very seriously.
The life seems to turn around, but sometimes I have to ask myself. “Where is my home? And what’s my future?”

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are in the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that your choice of sports might have great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry (资源饥渴). Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses in good condition. This causes major environment effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you can take up today.
You don't need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes and you don't have to worry about resources and your purse. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sports you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be "green gyms". They are better replacement for traditional health clubs and modern sports stadiums. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it's free.
