Winston sat on a chair in the train station as usual, watching the people passing by. Suddenly he noticed something different. Two bare (赤裸的) feet walked past. Winston wondered what kind of a man couldn’t afford to buy himself shoes.
“Sorry, it has been a hard day,” the shoe-less person said sadly, sitting beside Winston. “I had to sell my shoes, had to sell them away, can you believe that?
He pointed to the cake beside him.
While staring at the man, a sense of shame washed over Winston. He had guessed this stranger was a bad person simply for his lack of shoes. In fact this man was a more generous (慷慨的) person than Winston had ever seen.

Old George bought the black gloves for just $35 ten years ago. They were made of leather skin, soft and warm and very strong. Until then, he had worn cheaper manmade material. Those gloves never lasted longer than three years. He first decided to buy the expensive gloves, because they would make him feel nice in front of others.
George never let a drop of water or rain touch his expensive gloves, so they looked new. Losing this favorite thing was almost like losing a child to him. Bad luck! Geogorge lost his expensive gloves on New Year's Day.
Back home, George was at a loss. In deep winter, he could not do without a pair of gloves. If he bought cheap ones again, he would have to replace(更换) them vey soon. If he bought a new leather pair, it would cost $50 now. He was upset that people no longer returned things they found on the road.
After the holiday, poor George decided to buy another leather pair. Before boarding the subway, he went into Value Mart again to see if his gloves had been returned to the Lost and Found Office(失物招领处).

Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad: neither can the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak: the language of computerized communication found on Internet. To newcomers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the “translation” of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York; it’s great.
Schoolteachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).
Everyone should just relax, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing has been picked up again. However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write Standard English. Learning to write proper English is a must for their future.
Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, age 12, says, “I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun.”

Jia and Lin are two characters from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions(《红楼梦》 ), written by Cao Xueqin
Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American cultures, including the director and playwrights( 剧作家 ).Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera.
The book, which covers the rise and fall of the Jia family, has 120 chapters and hundreds of characters. But the opera writer David Henry Hwang reduced the number of characters to just seven. Hwang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin and tried to write a heartbroken tragedy that everyone would understand.
The art director Timmy Yip, from Hong Kong, tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costurnes(服装)and stage settings(布景).He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costurne. When Lin shows up on the stage, there is usually water around her on the stage.
The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to Western audience. Hwang told China Daily he was happy to “have made a contribution to the land where my parents were born”.

Lidong (Nov 7-8) is the start of winter. After lidong, most parts of the country are very cold. On this day, after a year of hard work, people are happy to take a break and spend some time with family. The northern part of China celebrates lidong as the “Small Spring Festival”. People have dumplings and eat mutton (羊肉) soup.
Xiaoxue (Nov 22-23) and daxue (Dec 6-8) come after lidong. During xiaoxue, northern China can snow and temperatures slowly fall below 0℃. Daxue means even more snow and bigger temperature drops.
When dongzhi (Dec 21-23) comes, it brings shortest days of the year and the longest nights. Many places around the country can be cold yet. Ancient (古代的) Chinese would often start counting “nine cold periods” (数九寒天) from dongzhi. Every cold period (一段时间) has nine days. They believed that after 81 cold days, spring would arrive.
Xiaohan (Jan 4-6) usually brings the low temperatures of the year. There may be high winds and snow.
Finally, during dahan (Jan 19-21), the snowy weather fills the fields with snow. All Chinese are ready to welcome the Chinese New Year after dahan. Spring Festival, China’s most important festival, falls at this time. After that, a new round of solar terms will start.
