It was 3:21 a.m. when ten-year-old Glenn Creamer was woken up by the smell of burning. Except for the crack(爆裂声)of flames somewhere below, there was not a sound in the house.
As his father was away on business, Glenn was worried about his mother, his 14-year-old sister Karen and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they woke up. Then he helped them to the garden. There, his sister and brother took short and quick breaths and coughed.
Glenn raced back into his mother’s room. He found it impossible to wake her up and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden. But the boy kept calm.
Luckily the telephone in the bedroom was still working. Glenn called his father. After Glenn made sure his father would telephone the firemen and ambulance service, he went on saving his mother.
First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. In this way, she would be kept away from the fire before the firemen arrived. Then, he went back to the garden.
Later, he heard the fire engine coming up. But how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where fire had almost covered the ground floor?
Fetching a ball of string(绳)from the garage Glenn raced back to his mother’s room. He tied one end of the string to her hand. Then he began to run back. He laid out the string as he went through the hall and back out into the garden.
Minutes later, he told the Fire Chief John Coughlan, “The string will lead you to my mother.” Mrs Creamer was saved finally.

Born in Claremore, Oklahoma, a small town near Tulsa, Page once dreamed of a career is commercial art. Her first job in the art department at a local radio station soon led to her performing 15-minute program on her own.

Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday in October. This holiday is much more important in some regions than in others (Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo being the biggest Sweetest Day cities). It is a holiday that is more and more popular throughout the country. Sweetest Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in October as a day to make someone happy. It is a moment which offers all of us an opportunity to remember not only the sick and the aged, and children without parents, but also friends, relatives and those whose helpfulness and kindness we have enjoyed.
Over 60 years ago, a Cleveland man, Herbert Birch Kingston, believing that the city’s orphans (孤儿) and patients too often felt forgotten and neglected, thought up the idea of showing them that they were remembered. He did this by giving out small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he gave out these small gifts on a Saturday in October. During the years that followed, other Clevelanders began to take part in the celebration, which came to be called “Sweetest Day”. In time, the Sweetest Day idea of spreading cheer to the weak was broadened to include everyone, and became a moment for remembering others with a kind act or small gifts—cards, candy, flowers and so on. And soon the idea spread to other cities all over the country.
Sweetest Day is not based on any single group’s religious feelings or on a family relationship. It is a reminder that a thoughtful word or deed enriches (丰富) life and gives it meaning. Because for many people remembering takes the form of gift-giving, Sweetest Day offers us the opportunity to show others that we care in a practical way.
