Since 2011, the Shanghai Peking Opera Company has held two seasons of “Youth Runway”, a long-term opera development project, hoping to find young opera talents. 118 young performers have successfully showed 200 plays and classical pieces. Most of them were born between 1995 and 2000, making them the company’s newest power. They will show both classical and new plays in many different styles.
① “The Butterfly Lovers”, one of the plays in this spring, is changed from a sad love story between a young poor man, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, the daughter of a wealthy family. They return as butterflies after their death. Another one, “Twelve Roles”, which will be presented in the summer, largely gets its idea from an American film “12 Angry Men”. The 12 members, all from different backgrounds, must decide a child’s fate in a murder.
Yueju opera, which developed around 1906 in Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province, is one of China’s most famous operas. In the old days, people loved it because of its styles of singing and melodies(旋律). Now, it is getting a new life. ② The performing season for young performers is held in its fifth year and has its own characteristic. Moreover, the project worked with BesTV to create a Yueju opera short video series about the 24 solar terms(节气)of traditional Chinese calendar.
Every year, the China Shanghai International Arts Festival provides chances for traditional opera performers like Yueju talents to perform. ③ Many traditional opera performers have got fans among students and young performers in recent years by showing how they prepare for a concert and behind-the-scenes stories with mobile apps on video websites.
④ They try many ways to make traditional art forms attractive to today’s youth, including the creation of short opera films and the use of popular melodies. “We believe that Xiqu (traditional opera) like Yueju can attract today’s young people because it can be mixed with different art forms,” says Chen Daming, a theater critic.

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony(和谐)in the same home? People who are thinking about keeping a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new success. According to the study, if the cat comes before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly probable that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a good relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn’t all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while fighting was seen in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals(信号)were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it shows aggression(好斗), while a dog doing the same shows submission.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers studied a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other’s language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”, and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.
What’s interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other’s body languages, suggesting that the two may have more in common than was expected. Once familiar with each other’s presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together in the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom(梳理)each other.
The importance of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets-to people who don’t get along, including neighbors, classmates at class, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

The UN Environment Programme says that rising temperatures could mean the end for some migrating (迁徙) animals.
Migrating animals move through several environments as they travel away from the cold areas in winter to warmer ones. Birds may fly from one part of the world to another, perhaps stopping at feeding grounds on the way. Whales and turtles travel through huge areas of ocean. A report says that changes in any one of the places where these animals stay can cause serious problems. “Obviously these animals have developed their travelling ways over thousands of years. But weather change is much greater over the next 25 to 50 years and it is impossible for these animals to change their habits fast enough,” said the report writer Dr. Robert Hepworth.
Turtles are hit hardest by rising temperatures. Scientists have found that at higher temperatures, turtles have far more female eggs than male ones. In parts of Malaysia, turtles are only giving birth to female babies. And some turtles are more probable to develop cancer as the waters get warmer.
With birds, the main problem is the harm to important areas at the end of their travels or at resting places along the way. About one-fifth of migrating birds are now in danger because of these changes including rising sea levels, land loss and more strong storms.
Some other animals are now in great danger. For example, the North Atlantic Right Whale is losing their food because of the changing ocean flows; the White-Nose Dolphin is out-competed (淘汰) by other kinds in warmer waters.
The report is not all bad news. Even with the temperature changing, protecting the environment can still help migrating animals return. “We need governments to start taking action all over the world. The clock is ticking. We should make full use of every minute.” said Dr Hepworth. And now some projects are already working! Whales are changing their feeding habits, finding new feeding grounds and new foods to eat.

What springs to mind when you think of kung fu, also known as wushu? Maybe the image of Shaolin monks fighting with a serious look in their eyes, or popular children’s movies like Kung Fu Panda. But are they really kung fu?
Recently, Laurence J. Brahm, a documentary filmmaker from the United States, explored this question in Searching for Kung Fu. In the movie, Brahm began a journey of a kung fu pilgrimage, traveling to cities in China and the US in search of the origin and value of kung fu.
Brahm himself is a kung fu lover who has been devoted to the practice for more than 40 years. For him, practicing this craft was more than a pastime.
Around a decade ago, Brahm was unable to use one of his legs for about two years and had to walk with a cane. But by practicing martial arts(武术)“very, very slowly”, he was able to recover step by step. Now, kung fu has become a daily routine for him and also the way he greets the day.
“Martial arts can help us connect our body, connect our blood flow, and also help connect us into our environment to increase our awareness.” Brahm said.
Still others find additional meaning in the practice.
“Chinese kung fu is full of Chinese philosophies(哲学)and core values,” Hong Kong actor Bruce Leung told Xinhua.
Non-fight is one of these values, which is shown both in the name and the practice. Wu, is made up of two characters — ge, meaning “dagger-ax”, and zhi, meaning “to stop”. So, the meaning of kung fu in Chinese is the art of stopping fighting. Kung fu artists always end up with “baoquan”. This lets each person know that there is nothing hidden and shows trust.
Brahm’s appreciation of kung fu is clear. He sees it as “a mirror of Chinese culture”.
The traditional values of kung fu, actually, are in the minds of all Chinese people. Why does China want to be in harmony with other nations? “Its part of the psychology(心理)of the Chinese people. It’s also national psychology.” Brahm told Xinhua.
Brahm also believes that today’s world urgently needs to restart equal exchanges between countries, and that culture and sports, such as kung fu, can serve as a great channel and bridge.
