Crossing-the-bridge rice noodles is a very famous dish in Yunnan. When you eat crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, you are served with a big bowl of hot chicken soup, some uncooked meat and vegetables, and of course a bowl of rice noodles.
It is recorded that during the Qing dynasty, a scholar (书生) from Mengzi city, Yunnan province, needed to prepare for imperial exams (科举考试). To study hard for the exams, he decided to go to a small and quiet house on the island on Nanhu Lake. The scholar had a loving wife who brought meals to him every day. Because of a far distance, including crossing a long bridge, the food always got cold when she arrived. One day, the wife brought chicken soup and rice noodles to him. When she got there, she found that the chicken soup was still hot. After putting the rice noodles and other things into the soup, she found it tasted very delicious. So she started bringing separated chicken soup, rice noodles, and other things to the house and mixed them after arriving. Soon this way of cooking became popular around the city. People named the dish “crossing-the-bridge rice noodles” in memory of its inventor.
Now crossing-the-bridge rice noodles is the first choice of many visitors to taste in Yunnan. This special dish not only lets them feel the hospitality (好客) of people in Yunnan, but it also reminds them of the hard-working husband and the wise and loving wife.

You must have read or heard of the love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》). But can you imagine the singing opera (歌剧) in English?
Recently, the novel has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performances came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan. It is welcomed both at home and abroad. Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American culture. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera. The opera writer David Henry Huang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Huang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin instead of the rise and fall of the Jia family so that everyone would understand. The art director Timmy Yip tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings (布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her on the stage.
It isn’t the first time that they have made an opera adapted from Chinese literature (文学). The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to western audiences, spreading Chinese culture to the world. They are happy to have made a contribution to the land where their parents were born.
