You must have read or heard of the love story between Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu from the classic Chinese novel A Dream of Red Mansions (《红楼梦》). But can you imagine the singing opera (歌剧) in English?
Recently, the novel has been made into an English-language opera. After being performed in San Francisco, US, the performances came to Beijing, Changsha and Wuhan. It is welcomed both at home and abroad. Many of the opera’s creators have backgrounds in both Chinese and American culture. Their understanding of both cultures helped them to change a Chinese classic into a foreign-language opera. The opera writer David Henry Huang cut down the number of characters to just seven. Huang, a Chinese-American, focused on the love story between Jia and Lin instead of the rise and fall of the Jia family so that everyone would understand. The art director Timmy Yip tried to help foreign people understand the characters using costumes and stage settings (布景). He compared Lin to water and gave her a light green costume. When Lin shows up on stage, there is usually water around her on the stage.
It isn’t the first time that they have made an opera adapted from Chinese literature (文学). The creators consider it to be a meaningful job to introduce a Chinese classic to western audiences, spreading Chinese culture to the world. They are happy to have made a contribution to the land where their parents were born.

Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem trilogy has been popular as a modern science fiction classic since it won the Hugo Award in 2015. Many of the series’ fans have wondered when there would be a film or television adaptation of the series.
Interestingly enough, it turns out that there already is one: a cartoon series called My Three Body. It has been running on Bilibili for the last couple of years. The series uses the computer game, the Minecraft, to bring its story to life.
My Three Body is directed by Li Zhenyi, who first discovered Liu’s work in 2006. As a fan of cartoon and the sci-fi novels, he began adapting his beloved series on his own in 2014.
“At that time, the first book in the series had not won any prizes yet. It was not as popular as it is now in China,” Li said. “Many people didn’t know about the novel or what it is about. So I wanted to make a video to help everyone understand the story better since it’s easier to watch a video than to read a book.”
Bilibili recently released the third season of Li’s cartoon series named My Three Body, Legend of Zhang Beihai. People who have watched it speak highly of its story, pictures and music. The series has even scored 9.7 out of 10 on review platform Douban.
Li said he and his team had never expected it to be such a huge success. Meanwhile, he was glad to see that he has got his final goal: to help The Three-Body Problem series reach more people through his work.

The mother finds great happiness in caring for her little bun boy. But as the bun becomes a teen, he pulls away from his mom. In life, all little “baos” grow up. They make friends and become independent. They can experience this sad time: Parents want to treat you as a little “bao”, even though you are almost an adult.
As the mother tries hard to stop her “bao” from leaving, she puts him into her mouth and swallows him accidentally. She feels regretful and sad. Her wish to keep him close makes her lose him forever.
Are your parents too protective? Do they make you feel like a little “bao”? Do you feel unhappy about this? If so, it will help to understand the love and sadness of the mother in Bao. When you want to roll your eyes(翻白眼) at your parents, remember that parents do that just because of love. The wish to become more independent is normal. However, you are expected to express your feelings without “lashing out” like “bao” does in the film. Ask your parents how you can have some privacy(隐私) and independence in a way that makes them feel comfortable. And tell them that, in some way, you will always be their little “bao”.

The coach, Zhang Zheliang, said that some people didn’t believe the teenage girls could do well in lion dance. They thought girls’ practicing lion dance didn’t follow the tradition. That made Zhang realize the situation for girls was difficult, but he didn’t give up. He set up a women’s team. Then he designed flags with the name “women’s team” on them and made pink lion heads.
The year 2021 saw the changes. The girls’ lion dance team got the first prize in a match in Guangzhou’s Baiyun district (区). The next year, the girls once again clinched the top prize in the junior group in the 16th Guangdong Provincial Games. They proved themselves to be excellent.
Now the team has over 20 girls from several places, from the age of 7 to 19. Li Jiawen, 17, acts as the lion head. When she wears it, she has to go up to heights of at least 1.7 meters. She shares that their success comes from hard work and training day after day.
Lion dance is not easy, especially for girls, because it needs strength (力量) and martial art movements (武术动作). But girls have their own advantages and their characters help them show the lion’s feelings and behaviors better.
Zhang said, “When the team takes the show to primary schools, more young girls become interested in lion dance. This shows ancient traditions should be passed down openly!”

But when you’re spending time online and reading so many opinions, it’s quite possible that you’ll sometimes see someone write something that you strongly disagree with.
In fact, you might feel so strongly that you feel like you should reply to this person at once. You might do some research, find some facts of your own and reply to what they’ve written. You finish writing out your reply, click (点击) “Post” and win the argument!
Except that it’s not really much of a victory. Most people don’t like it when other people disagree with their ideas, especially online strangers. It’s unlikely that they will change their opinion just because you argued with them. In fact, it’s possible that you made them feel more confident that they’re correct.
And the thing is, when you get in these kinds of fights online, it slowly influences you. You might not know it at first, but the argument that you take part in can actually have a bad effect on your mood. If you argue often, you start to enjoy arguing and then end up doing it even more. It’s a dangerous cycle.
I guess the best thing to do is to tell yourself that most arguments aren’t worth it. There are much better and more interesting things to do, whether online or in real life.
1. How does the writer feel about social media?A.People seldom use it to argue. | B.Many people use it to express their opinions. |

Just like a bank account, you can put money in or take it out based on what you think, say, and do. For example, when I keep a promise to myself, I feel in control, like putting money to my account. But when I break a promise to myself, I feel bad, like taking money out.
So let me ask you. How is your PBA? How much trust and confidence do you have in yourself? Are you rich or poor according to your PBA? Check out these signs below to see where you stand.
Possible Signs of a Low PBA:
You give in (让步) easily to what your friends want.
You often feel that you’re not good enough.
You worry too much about what others think of you.
You act like you’re better than others to hide the real weakness.
You envy others easily, especially when someone close to you succeeds.
Possible Signs of a Healthy PBA:
You stand up for yourself and even when others treat you badly.
You don’t care too much about being popular.
You see life as mostly good experiences.
You trust yourself.
You have goals you’re working towards.
You are happy for the successes of others.
If your personal bank account is low, don’t lose heart. It doesn’t have to be forever. Just start putting small amount of “money” in your account today—it may be ¥1, ¥5, or ¥10. You’ll feel your confidence growing. Small amount of “money” over a long period of time is the way to a healthy and rich PBA.
With the help of different teen groups, I’ve made a list of six key parts that can help you build your PBA. And, just like Newton’s Law of Motion (牛顿运动定律), with every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Putting “money” in PBA | Taking “money” out of PBA |
Keep promises to yourself | Break personal promises |
Do small acts of kindness | Keep to yourself |
Be gentle with yourself | Beat yourself up (自责) |
Be honest | Lie |
Renew yourself | Make yourself tired out |
Show your talents | Hide your talents |

If you are looking to get a better understanding of the world around you, chemistry is the perfect subject to study. It’s a study of matter (物质), its properties—ways in which it behaves in special conditions, and how it interacts with everything around it. At the heart of all the discoveries, such as medicine, cooking, and several other areas, is one important table that organizes elements based on their atomic number and chemical properties: the periodic table.
Although the first periodic table was published in 1869, it was a work in progress for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Since ancient times, people have been interested in elements such as gold, tin, iron and copper (which are written as Au, Sn, Fe and Cu in the table) in their natural forms. They were dug up from the ground and used to make jewelry, guns, coins, and many other things. Over time, people became more curious about these metals and how they were made up. In ancient Greece, Aristotle and other philosophers said things were made from the elements of earth, water, fire and air. For years, this idea was accepted. Then people began to consider this idea again during the Age of Enlightenment.
In 1661, Irish scientist Robert Boyle described an element as something that “cannot be broken down into a simpler matter by a chemical reaction”. Over a century later, Antone-Laurent de Lavoisier, Father of Chemistry, would publish the first modern textbook on chemistry. In it, he listed some matter which he believed should be divided as elements into two groups: metals and non-metals. Although his work wasn’t completely correct, it represented a big step forward at that time.
Over the next century, scientists started to divide the elements into different groups depending on their properties and atomic weights. However, it is Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev who is usually believed as the first person to make a periodic table. Although other scientists had handed in tables, they were finally refused by the scientific community because they were short of details. Mendeleev put all of the elements in a proper order according to their atomic mass. He was even smart enough to leave empty spaces for elements which hadn’t been discovered at the time. Although Mendeleev’s periodic table wasn’t perfect, it set the way or order which is similar to the one used today.

D.They thought chemistry are useful for everything. |
A.to advise us to respect the great chemist | B.to remind us to pay attention to his contribution |
C.to require us to care about the history | D.to encourage us to discover and think |
A.The influence of chemistry is the easiest to see in the real world. |
B.Aristotle was spoken highly of during the Age of Enlightenment. |
C.Mendeleev created the table and many other scientists admired it. |
D.Robert Boyle was the one who wrote down every element on Earth. |
A.how the table developed | B.when the table first appeared |
C.what the table is like | D.why the table is popular |
