Every morning Hannah Griffiths and her workmates walked into the rainforest in the Maliau Basin in Borneo, where they had set up a set of experiments to look at the ecological effects of small creatures: termites(白蚁).
Termites are notorious. They are thought to make a loss of billions of dollars each year in the US because they bite a lot of things. And they are responsible for something like 2% of global carbon emissions, simply because of their huge populations and their liking for chewing through carbon-rich materials. People hate them and are trying to kill them.
But they play a key role in many natural ecosystems. Scientists have known for years that in tropical forests, termites chew up fallen leaves and dead wood. They help keep the fallen material under control. They let nutrients from the dead material back into the system to be used by other plants, insects, and animals. But scientists didn’t know exactly how important the insects were in keeping the forest healthy and functional, so they removed termites from some areas of the forest and saw what would happen.
Hannah Griffiths and her workmates started their experiments. It chanced that the forest was hit by an extreme drought at that time. During the non-drought years, they saw there was wasn’t much difference between the normal places and the ones where they’d removed the termites, but during the drought, the effects were easy to see. What they found was unexpected: in the termite—rich areas, the soil stayed slightly wet, more trees seedlings sprouted, and the system worked well during the long, dry period.
They could pick out the real importance of termites to the system only because they happened to study the drought, Griffiths pointed out, “And that rings alarm bells in my head,” she said, “because it makes me think: what else don’t we know? If we start damaging biological communities, what will happen? And what if a species dies out?”

A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.
As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it?
·If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying. ·If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday. ·If you have no alternative, you have no other choice. |
Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
23. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?A.The situation. | B.The crime scene. |
C.A new and difficult word. | D.Everything that is known. |
A.They each pay half. | B.Jim pays every time. |
C.They take turns paying. | D.Their parents pay for them. |
A.By giving a fact. | B.By taking an example. |
C.By telling a story. | D.By having a discussion. |
A.My brother is my senior by two years. | B.He was ill so he was absent from school. |
C.A criminal was sentenced to death by law. | D.60 students were present at the sports meeting. |

Many students want to improve their memories and learn better. Today we will introduce some no-cost things you can do.
Exercise

Pre-study test

For example, if you are using an English textbook, you might first look at some important words at the end of the unit. You could ask yourself what they mean or how they are used. While you might not know the answer, you will probably have a goal to learn so that you can remember the answer when studying!
Sleep
A study show that sleep helps you to learn in two ways. An expert explains that "a person with enough sleep can concentrate best." He also says, "Sleep itself plays an important role in making the memory stronger which is necessary for learning new information.”
Wakeful rest
When you finish studying, you often go straight another activity. Perhaps you play a video game or watch TV. In a study, even older adults who rested for 10 minutes after learning new words remember more words better.
