Perhaps you have heard the phrase “Zaun culture” online. Zaun is the name of an online gaming server. Players there often swear at each other. But recently, this “swearing culture” is spreading into other areas online, such as livestreaming.
This kind of environment is not healthy for teenagers. According to a 2019 survey, 175 million Chinese minors are Internet users. To “clean up” the online environment, six ministries, including the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), released a document on Aug 25.
According to this document, China will take strict action against negative online social interactions involving minors, including cyberbullying.
For example, there are many QQ groups for fans of stars. These fans get together to discuss their favorite stars and organize activities. But some of these groups ask their members to attack people who criticize their favorite stars. Some groups also teach fans how to swear the same way that Zaun players do.
These QQ groups will be banned according to the document, as a great number of minors are in these groups.
Many young Internet users have also been bullied online. Chen Qi (not her real name), 15, once wrote a weibo post about an actress. She then received hundreds of messages full of insults and threats from the actress’ fans. It is hoped that this will happen less often in the future.

First aid is a very useful skill to have. By learning it, you could save someone’s life someday. But in China, less than 1 percent of adults have first aid knowledge, according to the China Science Communication website.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) has realized this. On Aug 24, it issued a statement along with the Red Cross Society of China. It has asked all public schools in China to provide first aid courses, including CPR training, as part of their health classes.
A 2019 survey by the State Council showed that 64.6 percent of schools already have these courses. However, the results have not been good. According to the MOE statement, future results are expected to be better.
Other countries have also made efforts to provide first aid training to their citizens. In 1966, the US government said police officers, firefighters, middle school teachers and college instructors must receive CPR training. A 2017 survey showed that 65 percent of Americans have received CPR training.
In Switzerland, all citizens learn first aid skills. In Germany, 80 percent of people have received first aid training, according to CGTN.

A new school year has started. Across China, 280 million students and 20 million teachers are going back to school, Xinhua reported. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new semester has been a concern.
To safeguard the health of students and teachers, the Ministry of Education (MOE) and National Health Commission have put forward a few measures. Let’s take a look at some of them.
1. Should students wear masks at school?
Middle school students in low-risk areas don’t have to wear masks at school. But they still need to carry masks with them just in case. For example, if a student in the class suddenly has a fever, all of the other students should put on their masks at once, CCTV News noted.
2. Will schools be locked down?
Primary and middle schools will be under closed management after reopening. Parents and other visitors won’t be allowed to enter schools. This is to cut down the risk of spreading COVID-19.
However, this doesn’t mean that schools are fully closed. Students or teachers are able to leave if they need to get something done outside. But they have to report where they go.
3. Could students travel around?
The National Day holiday will arrive soon. Many students might want to take a trip with family members. Can they travel to other cities and provinces?
According to the MOE, those who travel to low-risk areas must show a green health code to be able to return to school. Those who come back from medium-risk or high-risk areas need to take a nucleic acid test (核酸检测). Some schools will also ask students to report beforehand if they are going to take a trip.

When you want to go somewhere, you can easily find your way by using a map app on your smartphone. Your smartphone “knows” where you are and can tell you where to go.
This is possible with the help of satellite navigation (satnav)(卫星导航) systems. A satnav system uses groups of satellites to find out where people are. It sends information to a receiver, such as a smartphone. The more satellites a system has, the more accurate it is.
On June 23, the last satellite of China’s Beidou Navigation Satellite System was launched into space. Beidou, China’s own satnav system, was finally completed. It is one of four global navigation systems, along with US’ GPS, Russia’s GLONASS and the European Union’s Galileo.
On July 31, Beidou started providing full-scale (全面的) global services. More than 120 countries and regions are now using Beidou services.
Since 2000, China has launched 59 Beidou satellites. Beidou can be used in areas that include farming, public services and business. It has a positioning (定位) accuracy of under 10 meters. This summer, people along the Yangtze River used Beidou-based device to monitor floodwaters in real-time with an accuracy of just a few centimeters.
Beidou also has a unique messaging ability. It allows people to send text messages up to 1,200 Chinese characters in length when mobile phone services are interrupted (中断) by natural disasters.
38. What does a satnav system do?
A.It helps people plan trips. |
B.It helps people navigate. |
C.It lets people send text messages. |

“Your hair looks nice today.”
This is an example of a compliment. It feels nice when someone notices and praises you for something. But are there cultural differences in making compliments?
Sometimes I receive compliments for things that I don’t think I deserve. For example, when a taxi driver says “Wow, your Chinese is so good!” even though the only thing I said to him was “Hello, please take me to the airport.” It feels insincere to receive a compliment like this for saying just one simple sentence. However, I know he’s just trying to be polite.
It also seems like Chinese people are a bit more humble (谦虚的) than others when they receive a compliment. They often downplay (对……低调处理) the compliments they receive. I appreciate this quality, as people like this tend to be more honest. I’ve noticed that older people are extremely humble.
When and where should you give compliments? I try my best to compliment people in the service industry. People sometimes complain about the bad service in restaurants, stores and other places. But if I get good service, I make sure to compliment whoever served me, such as by saying “the food was delicious” or something like that. This will encourage them to continue to provide good service to others.
42. What does the word “compliment” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.问候 | B.称赞 | C.抱怨 | D.关注 |
A.The writer often praises taxi drivers. |
B.The writer speaks Chinese very well. |
C.Praising others can be a way of being polite. |
D.Most of the compliments we receive are insincere. |
A.Appreciative. | B.Uncomfortable. | C.Relaxed. | D.Upset. |
A.The writer only compliments people in the service industry. |
B.It is not proper to complain about bad service very often. |
C.Everyone who served the writer got a compliment from him. |
D.The writer believes that compliments can be very encouraging. |
