Jo was the first to wake up on Christmas morning. When her sisters were awake(醒的) too, they all went down to the kitchen. They looked around, but to their surprise, mother wasn’t there. Only Hannah, their servant(仆人), was at home.
“Your mother went out early,” she said. “A poor boy came to the door asking for food. She was sorry for him and went to see his family.”
When they were waiting for their mother, the girls put their presents(礼物) for her in a basket. Soon they heard the sound of a key in the front door.

Then they all ran into the hall to greet their mother.
“Merry Christmas, Mother!” they cried.
“Merry Christmas, little daughters!” Mrs. March said. She hugged them all and kissed them. Then she suddenly became very serious.
“Girls, listen. I want to say something before breakfast.” They all sat down at the breakfast table and Mrs. March went on.
“I went to see a poor woman this morning. Her name is Mrs. Hummel. She lives near here in one room with her seven children. They are cold and hungry because they don’t have a fire or any food. The oldest boy Jack came to ask me for help. Girls, can we give them our breakfast as a Christmas present?”
For a minute, nobody spoke. But a lot of words came to their mind. “Are they hungry to die?” “Are their clothes all worn out(破烂的)?”. Then Jo said, “Mother, I’m so happy that you came back before we started eating!”

The Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games was held from July 28 to August 8. It is a great chance for global athletes (运动员) to talk with and learn from each other. To help them have a better understanding of Chinese culture (文化), we held all kinds of cultural activities, such as bamboo weaving, shadow puppetry, kite making, paper cutting and so on in the athletes’ village.
And these activities run from morning to evening. The athletes usually come to the experience (体验) center in their free time, especially in the evening. Every room has masters (大师) and volunteers to guide the athletes. For most of them, it was their first time to experience Chinese hand-made art forms.
A Taekwondo athlete from Iran, was interested in making kites. “In my country, culture is a big thing, so I wanted to see and learn Chinese culture to see the differences and enjoy it. And there are some similarities. In fact, when I was a child, my father always made kites for me. You do it the same here and it was so nostalgic. I really miss the old days. I’ll try more.” says she.
The Australian team leader Bob tried paper cutting and said he needed more practice. He felt it was very challenging but relaxing. “I have three young children at home in Australia, and I’ll give this to my youngest daughter. She must love it. I think it’s an eye-opening experience to be here in China and experience the Chinese culture. It’s wonderful to come here and learn more.”

Do you often compare(比较)yourself with other people and wish you could be more like them? We are all different in our own way. Self-acceptance can help you feel happier and better about yourself.
What is self-acceptance?
Self-acceptance means learning to accept(接受)the things that make you who you are. And being thankful for what you’re good at, like sports, science or singing. Self-acceptance also means valuing(重视)the parts of you that don’t shine very brightly, like being forgetful or untidy. A 12-year-old girl, Lily, says self-acceptance means “knowing your own weaknesses and strengths(强项), and accepting who you are no matter what other people say or think.”
Why is self-acceptance good for you?
When you accept who you are, you worry less about things you can’t change. It makes you feel happier and more confident. The Anna Freud Centre, a charity that helps young people, says everyone can feel that they have to be perfect(完美的), but that makes us forget about the little things that make us special. ▲ For example, some people may find letters or numbers hard to read, but they might have strengths in other things, like finding good ways to work out problems.
How can you accept yourself?
Start by making a list of all the things you like about yourself. Maybe you’re good at cooking, or people find it easy to talk to you. Also, try saying kind, happy things to yourself in a mirror every morning. Think up ways to treat yourself, such as taking a long shower, watching your favorite film, or eating delicious ice-cream. But don’t forget it’s important to eat healthy food and get enough sleep.
32. Which of the following is NOT true about self-acceptance?A.Learning to accept who you are. |
B.Being thankful for what you are good at. |
C.Knowing your own weakness and strengths. |
D.Worrying about the parts of you that don’t shine very brightly. |
A.It can also help you know what you’ re really good at. |
B.Accept yourself and never say you can’t do it. |
C.It’s important to learn from people around you. |
D.Live the life you like to make yourself happy. |
A.By giving examples. | B.By asking questions. |
C.By telling stories. | D.By comparing differences. |
A.Learn to Love Yourself | B.How to be a Perfect Person |
C.Accept Yourself and Others | D.Relax and be Happy |
①In the past ten years, AI-driving(人工智能驾驶)has achieved an important milestone in development(发展). The first AI-driving bus went on a road test in Shenzhen in 2017. Changsha became the first city in China to use AI-driving taxis in 2020. And now, you can even take an AI-driving taxi in Chongqing.
②In an AI-driving car, AI plays the driver’s role. A special tool is put at the front and sides of the car to get information from the road, and then send it to the central part to make decisions and drive the car.
③AI could be a “better driver” than humans because its reaction(反应)time is much shorter than humans’. Also, unlike humans, AI never gets tired after long-time driving so there is no fear(担心)of this problem. Besides, when two humans drive too close on a road and one has to slow down to avoid(避免)an accident, both would like the other to do so, and this is a big problem because they cannot talk to each other. However, that problem will not happen to two AI-driving cars because they could “talk” through the cloud and decide which one should slow down.
④However, there are more unknown things on real roads. For example, there is a chance that bad people may get into the car and drive it fast.
⑤The biggest problem for AI is not about learning to remember road signs, but about whether(是否)it can have a good reaction in sudden and unexpected situations(突发情况). People still worry about some safety problems that we didn’t even think about, but after more road tests, it is going to do better.
⑥Although there are still some problems that need to be solved, we can already see AI-driving cars on the road. We believe they are going to be widely used one day. We can just keep waiting and hope to meet them in the near future.
36. AI could be a better driver than humans because it ________.①can react in a shorter time ②has fear of nothing
③never gets tired ④can drive better in unexpected situations
⑤can “talk” through the cloud to avoid accidents
A.①②③ | B.①③⑤ | C.①④⑤ | D.②③④ |
A.Changsha is the first city in China to test the AI-driving bus on the road. |
B.AI never gets tired after long-time driving but people do. |
C.Bad people can easily get into an AI-driving car and drive fast. |
D.The AI-driving car may not react well if it meets a horse crossing the road. |
A.To ask people to buy AI-driving cars in the future. |
B.To tell people the use of AI in driving cars. |
C.To show that AI-driving cars have a bright future. |
D.To find out the danger of AI-driving cars on real roads. |

When summer comes, quite a few people enjoy swimming in the water. There are many places for swimming, but first you need to know how to be safe.
Tips on water safety; ◆Read all of the signs before swimming, because you must make sure you’re tall enough(足够)and old enough. ◆Find out how deep the water is first. If you’re just learning to swim, stay in the shallow(浅的)water. ◆Check your health condition first. Make sure you’re not too full or too hungry. Don’t jump in the water if you don’t feel very well. ◆Do some warm ups before swim in order to prevent hands or feet cramps(抽筋). ◆Always have an adult watch you when you’re in the water. Make sure there’s a lifeguard, and she or he can help you. ◆People who are not good at swimming are not allowed to get in the water for rescue. | This summer vacation, Li Mei went to a water park with her friends. She just started to swim, but she didn’t wear the life jacket. When she swam to the deep water area, she got drowned(溺水). Luckily, a lifeguard(救生员)saw it and saved her. |
In August, five students went swimming in the Fish Scale Dam in Ya’an, Sichuan. When they played water in the river, it started to rain. A villager saw them and shouted, “Keep away from the river! The rain is getting hard, and the river will be soon flooded(淹没).” After hearing this, they quickly swam to the bank, and ran to the safe places. However, a boy didn’t get to the bank in time. When the river suddenly flooded, he was washed away. His friends got so worried. Some of them shouted for help and called 119. The others looked around and found a piece of wood. They threw it to the boy to help him keep floating(漂浮). After a while, some villagers came with a long rope and a life ring. Finally, the boy grabbed the rope and got rescued(救助). |
46. Why do we need to read all the signs before swimming?
47. How did the boy get rescued?
48. Can you think of another two tips on water safety? What are they?
