Ren Kexin is preparing a New Year gift for her best friend. It is a cross stitch(十字绣). Making the gift takes up a lot of her free time. “I’m interested in making gifts myself,” said the girl in Grade 10, “and I believe my friend will like it very much.”
Many Chinese students make gifts instead of buying them. Ren is one of the students. A DIY gift is not only cheaper but also interesting to make and it has a special meaning.
Teenagers also make other gifts like bracelets(手链)and Chinese knots. “Gift shops may sell many of them, but any gift you make yourself is special.” Zheng Ruobing, a 16-year-old girl said. She once made a gift for an American teacher. Her teacher was excited with the cross stitch.
However, not all students are DIY fans. Luo Dinghan thinks making gifts is a waste of time. “I often buy gifts for my friends, as time is more important than money,” he said. “And some gifts you get from shops are much more beautiful.”

A long time ago, when all the grandfathers and grandmothers of today were little boys and little girls or very small babies, or perhaps not even born, Dad, Mum, Mary, Laura and Baby Carrie left their little house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin. They drove away and left it lonely and empty in the clearing among the big trees, and they never saw that little house again. They were going to the Indian country. Dad said there were too many people in the Big Woods now. The path that went by the little house had become a road. Almost every day, Laura and Mary stopped their playing and watched in surprise at a wagon (四轮马车) slowly passing by on the road.
Wild animals would not stay in a country where there were so many people. Dad did not like to stay, either. He liked a country where the wild animals lived without being afraid. He liked to see little fawns (小鹿) and their mothers looking at him from the woods, and the fat, lazy bears eating berries (浆果) in the wild-berry lands. In the long winter evenings, he talked to Mum about the Western country. In the west the land was level, and there were no trees. The grass grew thick and high. There the wild animals ran and fed as though they were in a grass and there were no settlers. Only Indians lived there.
