In 2005, Cliff Jones began a journey round Britain on a unicycle, a bike with only one wheel. He had already made a documentary film about his experiences travelling around Europe in a 50-year-old car. He was mad about motor sport and had a job building racing car engines. To save money, Cliff rode to work in London on an old bicycle, which he also used to go to France on holiday. “That trip opened my eyes,” he says. “I decided to do a tour of Britain by bike.”
Cliff didn’t want a normal touring bike, and he knew he wanted to build one himself. “The craziest bicycle I could think of was a unicycle, so I went to a factory to see how they are made.” After one false start in 2004, when he had to turn back because of a knee injury, he finally set out in 2005. He was away for four months, and travelled over 8,500 kilometres.
The best bit of the trip was arriving in Wales and seeing Mount Snowdon. “Although I met cyclists who could easily ride up mountains on their bikes, which I couldn’t do, I never regretted my unicycle. The further away from London I got, the more amazed people seemed by it.” His worst moment came when he had to drink some dirty water from a stream. A serious fever kept him in bed in hospital for five long days. He was determined not to give up and go back home before he had completed his challenge, but found it hard to carry on because he felt so weak. Though he had a hard time, Cliff now says, “If l could afford it, I would like to do something similar again.”

I hardly ate breakfast. I didn’t pay attention in class. I kept thinking of the Relays Friday.
The 4×100 relay means four runners each run a hundred metres. Each runner passes their baton (接力棒) to the next runner. Since I’m the fastest, I’ll surely run the anchor leg. The anchor gets the baton last. The anchor crosses the finish line. The anchor is your chance to win. The anchor gets the praise.
All day long I imagined Friday’s race: Samuel leads off, he hands the baton to Billy halfway through the first turn, Billy hands to Paul. I look back past my shoulder. They’re all coming. I pick out Paul. He’s running into the final turn, he’s fifteen metres from me... ten metres... I take off. I put my left hand behind me (Hit it! Hit it! Now!). I feel the baton hit my left hand. I hold it and rush out. I’m dead last, ten metres behind everybody. It’s hopeless. By the time I hit the straightaway (直道), I’m passing the next-to-last runner, then the next, and the next. Forty thousand people jump. “Who is he?” they ask, and the answer comes, “It’s Coogan! Crash Coogan of Springfield!” I pass another, and now there are only three ahead of me, but there’s not enough time. “He can’t do it!” They scream, and now there are two ahead of me and the finish line seems so close and there’s only one ahead of me now and the human hurricane is blowing at my back, and I’m on the leader’s shoulder and suddenly there is complete silence. Seeing us sideways (侧向), we look like one. I remember the coach told me that in a close race, the one who leans (前倾) will win, so now with one last breath I throw my arms back and my chest forward and the red finish line breaks like a butterfly across my shirt. I slow down, I stop. I throw the baton high into the air, and the hurricane finally catches me and I close my eyes and let the cheer wash over me: COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOGAN!
31. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 2?A.To prove Crash is a good racer. |

A.Running as fast as he can. | B.Following the coach’s advice. |
C.Trying to win the relay race. | D.Making the crowd feel excited. |
A.The weather on the race day. | B.The excitement inside his body. |
C.The sound made by the other runners. | D.The noise made by people in the stands. |
A.It is difficult to win a relay race. | B.Crash wanted the race to last longer. |

“What a pretty Jasmine flower! What a pretty Jasmine flower! Nice to see and nice to smell! Praiseworthy scent, and white as well!”
Have you ever heard of this famous song, Mo Li Hua (Jasmine Flower)? Mo Li Hua is a Chinese folk song from Jiangsu Province. The song is so well-known that the jasmine flower became the Province Flower of Jiangsu in 2007. It was one of the first Chinese folk songs to be liked by people outside China. There are two versions (版本) of the song. One of them describes a custom of giving jasmine flowers, popular in the southern Yangtze River delta region.
Over time Mo Li Hua has been popular both in China and abroad. The song dates back to the 18th century. It was created during the Qianlong era (1735—1796) of the Qing dynasty. In 1896, the song was used as temporary (临时的) national anthem by the Qing Chinese officials in Europe. In 1982, the song found a place on a UNESCO list of recommended songs and was put into the musical textbooks in Asia. When Hong Kong and Macau returned to China in 1997 and 1999, this music was played in the ceremonies. An adaptation (改编) by Tan Dun and Wang Hesheng was played during the medal ceremonies at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. In 2018, with Second Farewell to Cambridge by the famous Chinese poet Xu Zhimo, Mo Li Hua was sung in Chinese by the King’s College Choir (国王学院合唱团) in Cambridge University. In its 500-year history, no other Chinese songs have ever been recorded. On the evening of February 15, 2022, Wang Yaping played part of the popular music Mo Li Hua on Shenzhou-13 at the Lantern Festival.
The song expresses sincere and simple feelings of Chinese people. People describe the music as “heart-touching”. It is such a beautiful song that it almost stands for China abroad. This melody is a cultural gift from the Chinese people to the world. With music, friendship is our message around the world, trying to achieve worldwide understanding.
