文章大意:本文主要讲了作者在一岁抓周的时候,他什么物品都没有选,而是选择奔向父亲,这件事让父亲落泪。

I asked my dad if I’d ever made him cry before because I couldn’t remember ever seeing him cry.

“There was once,” he said. He told me that when I was one year old, he put a pen, a piece of paper money, and a toy in front of me. He wanted to see which one I would pick. It’s a tradition that a lot of Chinese people do when their kids are one year old.

According to this tradition, it shows what the kid will value (重视) most when they grow up. For example, if the kid takes the pen, it means he or she will be a smart person in the future. If the kid takes the money, it means he or she will value money more than others and will become rich. If the kid takes the toy, it means he or she will like fun things and play a lot.

My father didn’t take this tradition so seriously. He was just doing it out of curiosity. He wondered which one I would pick anyway. He said that I just sat there and looked at the three things. He sat across from me and waited to see the result. I moved toward him and he held his breath. To his surprise, I pushed everything aside and went right into his arms. He didn’t realize that he was one of the choices.

And that was the first and only time I made him cry.

A.a penB.paper moneyC.a toyD.himself

At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the gym. Mother warned against it, and reminded me of the drowning in the sea. But the gym pool was safe.

I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.

The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi! Skinny! Get the hell out of here!” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep water. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened-when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great jump. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down endlessly.

When I came to life, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.

I never came back to the pool. This memory stayed with me as the years went by. It took me away the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decide to get a coach. Bit by bit, he built me a swimmer. Several months later, the coach was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the fear would return.

This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Skyworth. Only once did the fear return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Fear, what do you think you can do to me?”

I had overcome my fear of water.

8. The author’s fear of water was caused by________.
A.his poor skill in swimmingB.his mother’s warning of drowning
C.an outing to the beach with his fatherD.an unpleasant memory of the pool
9. Why was the author not scared to death when he was thrown into the water?
A.He knew how to swim in the pool.B.He felt that the pool in the gym was safe.
C.He was waiting for others to save him.D.He came up with an idea to get out.
10. By “but I was not” in paragraph 5, the author probably means________.
A.he was still a poor swimmer.
B.he had not come out of the fear yet.
C.he was not afraid of drowning any more.
D.he was not satisfied with the swimming training.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Goodbye, Mr. FearB.Hello, Childhood Fear
C.A Swimming AdventureD.My Excitement for Swimming

文章大意:本文主要介绍了睡眠的好处。

Recently, the Ministry of Education has issued (发布) five documents on strengthening (加强) the management for primary and middle school students, among which sleep management is required. It’s time to change our way of life and study.

You may think the best way to solve a difficult problem is to keep working on it, even overnight. But the truth is just the opposite: Your best chance to solve a problem is actually to sleep on it.

A team of researchers at Northwestern University, US, found that sleeping is useful in both making memory stronger and re-organizing it. This can help you solve problems.

The researchers did an experiment (实验) with 57 students. They asked them to solve 42 difficult problems on the first day. The students worked on each problem while listening to different music. The research encouraged students to remember the music they heard while solving the problems. In the end, there were six problems that the students still hadn’t solved.

The students then went back home to sleep. They were given special sleep-monitoring (睡眠监测) and music players. The players played music connected with the unsolved problems while the students were in the slow-wave sleep (慢波睡眠) stage. This stage is when people are likely to dream and reorganize their memories.

The next morning, the students tried the unsolved problems again. Researchers found they were 55 percent more likely to solve them. The music activated (激活) the memories they had of the problems while they were sleeping. It allowed them to “work” on the problems in their sleep.

Earlier studies of both people and animals have shown that sleep can not only make memory stronger, but also help us organize information in our brains. This study seems to support that understanding. So, the next time you face a difficult problem, sleep on it. Then play some music to remind yourself of the problem.

12. What did the researcher at Northwestern University find?
A.Sleeping can help people solve problems.
B.Listening to music can improve memory.
C.Music can help people solve problems faster.
D.People can solve difficult problems in their dreams.
13. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A.the teamB.the universityC.sleepingD.memory
14. What do we learn from the last paragraph?
A.This study supports earlier studies.
B.The research is of little practical value.
C.This study should have had animals included.
D.No research has been done in this field before.
15. If we divide the passage into three parts, which of the following is the best?
A.①②③④-⑤⑥-B.①②-③④⑤⑥-
C.①②--④⑤⑥⑦D.①②-③④⑤-⑥⑦

文章大意:本文是是一篇说明文,主要介绍了咀嚼时发出的声音对吃下的食物量的影响。
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。

Do you often listen to music or watch TV while eating?     16     A new study has found that the sounds you make while chewing have a great influence on the amount (量) of food you eat.     17

Some researchers from Brigham Young University carried out two experiments to test the relationship between “ the food sound salience (进食声音特性)” and the amount of food you eat during a meal. In the first experiment, people were given snacks to eat while they wore headphones.     18     When they were given loud music, they ate two pieces of bread. When given quiet music, however, they ate only one piece of bread.

In the second experiment, they found it could make people eat less when people just heard chewing sounds through an advertisement. These two experiments show that you should mind not just the taste and the appearance of food, but also the sounds when you are eating.     19

So the next time you eat something delicious, turn the music player and TV off.     20     You will find it interesting. Your food will be more delicious. At the same time, you will be full, but with little food.

A.They could listen to loud or quiet music.
B.Can you hear your chewing (咀嚼) sounds?
C.Just enjoy the food and your chewing sounds.
D.Change your life habits and become different.

F.The result suggests that people are likely to eat less if they can hear themselves eating.
