I asked my dad if I’d ever made him cry before because I couldn’t remember ever seeing him cry.
“There was once,” he said. He told me that when I was one year old, he put a pen, a piece of paper money, and a toy in front of me. He wanted to see which one I would pick. It’s a tradition that a lot of Chinese people do when their kids are one year old.
According to this tradition, it shows what the kid will value (重视) most when they grow up. For example, if the kid takes the pen, it means he or she will be a smart person in the future. If the kid takes the money, it means he or she will value money more than others and will become rich. If the kid takes the toy, it means he or she will like fun things and play a lot.
My father didn’t take this tradition so seriously. He was just doing it out of curiosity. He wondered which one I would pick anyway. He said that I just sat there and looked at the three things. He sat across from me and waited to see the result. I moved toward him and he held his breath. To his surprise, I pushed everything aside and went right into his arms. He didn’t realize that he was one of the choices.
And that was the first and only time I made him cry.

At eleven, I decided to learn to swim. There was a pool at the gym. Mother warned against it, and reminded me of the drowning in the sea. But the gym pool was safe.
I had a childhood fear of water. This started when I was three years old and father took me to the beach. The huge waves knocked me down and swept over me.
The pool was quiet. I was afraid of going in all alone, so I sat on the side of the pool to wait for others. Then came a big boy. He yelled, “Hi! Skinny! Get the hell out of here!” With that he picked me up and threw me into the deep water. I landed in a sitting position, and swallowed water. But I was not frightened-when my feet hit the bottom, I would make a big jump, come out of the surface. It seemed a long way down. I gathered all my strength when I landed and made what I thought was a great jump. Then I opened my eyes and saw nothing but water. I tried to yell but no sound came out. I went down, down endlessly.
When I came to life, I found myself lying on the bed in the hospital.
I never came back to the pool. This memory stayed with me as the years went by. It took me away the joy of boating and swimming. Finally, I decide to get a coach. Bit by bit, he built me a swimmer. Several months later, the coach was finished, but I was not. Sometimes the fear would return.
This went on until July. I swam across the Lake Skyworth. Only once did the fear return. When I was in the middle of the lake, I put my face under and saw nothing but bottomless water. I laughed and said, “Well, Mr. Fear, what do you think you can do to me?”
I had overcome my fear of water.

Recently, the Ministry of Education has issued (发布) five documents on strengthening (加强) the management for primary and middle school students, among which sleep management is required. It’s time to change our way of life and study.
You may think the best way to solve a difficult problem is to keep working on it, even overnight. But the truth is just the opposite: Your best chance to solve a problem is actually to sleep on it.
A team of researchers at Northwestern University, US, found that sleeping is useful in both making memory stronger and re-organizing it. This can help you solve problems.
The researchers did an experiment (实验) with 57 students. They asked them to solve 42 difficult problems on the first day. The students worked on each problem while listening to different music. The research encouraged students to remember the music they heard while solving the problems. In the end, there were six problems that the students still hadn’t solved.
The students then went back home to sleep. They were given special sleep-monitoring (睡眠监测) and music players. The players played music connected with the unsolved problems while the students were in the slow-wave sleep (慢波睡眠) stage. This stage is when people are likely to dream and reorganize their memories.
The next morning, the students tried the unsolved problems again. Researchers found they were 55 percent more likely to solve them. The music activated (激活) the memories they had of the problems while they were sleeping. It allowed them to “work” on the problems in their sleep.
Earlier studies of both people and animals have shown that sleep can not only make memory stronger, but also help us organize information in our brains. This study seems to support that understanding. So, the next time you face a difficult problem, sleep on it. Then play some music to remind yourself of the problem.

Do you often listen to music or watch TV while eating?
Some researchers from Brigham Young University carried out two experiments to test the relationship between “ the food sound salience (进食声音特性)” and the amount of food you eat during a meal. In the first experiment, people were given snacks to eat while they wore headphones.
In the second experiment, they found it could make people eat less when people just heard chewing sounds through an advertisement. These two experiments show that you should mind not just the taste and the appearance of food, but also the sounds when you are eating.
So the next time you eat something delicious, turn the music player and TV off.
A.They could listen to loud or quiet music. |
B.Can you hear your chewing (咀嚼) sounds? |
