Do you still remember the cultural TV show National Treasure hosted by Zhang Guoli on China Central TV? As a cultural show, this program is to show the background stories about some national treasures. The treasures in the show are presented by national treasure keepers who tell their stories with the collections in a special way. Today, I’ll introduce two treasures to you.

Recently, China has announced the list of the first five national parks. Each of them is divided into two parts—the core（核心）protection area and the general control area. In the core protection area, only research and surveillance（监视）in science are allowed. And the general control area is open to the public, allowing travel activities such as camping and hiking. In the future, national parks are expected to be natural classrooms. People can learn about different kinds of animals and plants through eco-friendly travel activities.

Three River-Source National Park on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is the largest national park in China. Because it is home to the sources of the Yangtze, Yellow and Lancang rivers, people call it “China’s water tower”.

Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park is in Heilongjiang and Jilin Provinces. It covers an area of 14,100 square kilometres. It is our country’s biggest and only place for wild Siberian tigers and Amur leopards to live in.

Wuyi Mountain National Park in Fujian Province is a UNESCO natural and cultural heritage site（遗址）. The forest makes up over 96 percent of the park. The park is the paradise of birds, kingdom of snakes and world of insects. You can also see the Danxia landform（地貌）there.

Giant Panda National Park connects panda habitats（栖息地）in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu Provinces. Inside the park are more than 1,600 wild giant pandas. They make up over 70 percent of the pandas in China.

Hainan Tropical Rain forest National Park is the largest tropical forest in China. There are more than 400 kinds of plants that can only be found in Hainan.

Giving directions in different places

If you ask people of different countries “Could you tell me the way to the post office?”     36     In Japan, people use landmarks instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, “    37     Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, “Follow me.”     38     Sometimes if a person doesn’t know the answer to your question, he or she, like a New Yorker, might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.”     39     They usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan!

    40     You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language. He or she will usually point to the correct direction. Go on in that direction and you may find the post office!

In classes, your teachers will talk about the topics that you are studying. They provide important information for you to know when you take tests. So you must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say. Here are the three stages（阶段） of taking notes and what you should do during each stage.

1.Before Class

Review your notes you have taken before you come to class. This will be good for remembering what was covered, and get you ready to understand new information in class.

2.During Class

Keep your attention on what your teacher is saying and “the signal words” that tell you what your teacher is going to say and it is important to write them in your notes. Examples of signal words are “the most important point… and remember that…”. Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the blackboard. Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviations（缩写） such as med for medicine, using symbols such as “%” for percent, and writing short sentences.

3.After Class

Rewrite your notes to make them more complete and accurate（准确） by changing abbreviation into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences. Use them to answer your questions. If necessary, ask your teacher for help.
