I arrived in New York two weeks ago. I am writing my diary in English because my English teacher Rachel says it is a good way to practice English. So far, I like New York and my school. I have three classes a day. Most of my classmates come from Japan, South Korea, Spain, Germany and Australia. There aren’t many Chinese students, so I have to use English most of the time. I am learning a lot! I am living in student housing, and I have my own comfortable room.

My English is hopeless! I was on the bus this morning and a man spoke to me, but I hardly understood him. I was very sad. Why is my English improving so slowly? I want to make lots of American friends, but this isn’t happening so easily. I’m a shy girl. It is hard for me to talk to some people, even my classmates! I like them, but sometimes I can’t understand them very well. I miss my friends and family. I want to go home in December.

I went to a school party last Friday and it was great. I talked with a Japanese boy named Kenji, a German girl named Wendy and an Italian girl named Carla. We talked about our countries’ customs (风俗) and our experiences in America. We are going to walk around New York together this weekend. Also, Kenji wants me to write for the student newspaper here at school. Maybe things are getting better!

Everyone gets angry. Many things may make you angry. Maybe your teacher gave you too much homework. Or maybe a friend borrowed your favorite video game and then broke it. You may get angry when something doesn’t go your way. Maybe you get angry when your team loses an important game. Or maybe you become a road rager(路怒族) when a driver accidentally cuts in front of you. That makes you angry!

You need to know what to do with your anger. Here are some things you can do when you feel angry.

◆Talk to a friend you can trust.

◆Take some exercise.

◆Draw pictures.

◆Run around the outside of the house three times as fast as you can.

◆Sing along with the CD player.

◆Think good thoughts may be about a fun vacation or your favorite sport.

Never getting angry is impossible. But when you’re angry, you can do something and it can make things better. Don’t let anger be the boss of you.

Shared life has become part of the lives of the old people in some communities (社区) in Beijing in recent years.

“The shared kitchen appeared in the community service center for the old in Shunyi several years ago,” said Zhang Mei, a young woman heading a volunteer group.

She set up the kitchen after she and her workmates found that the old people were sometimes hungry when they came to the service center to have a rest or take part in some activities.

Each person can bring his or her own cooking tools, fresh and tasty ingredients and good recipes (食谱) to the kitchen. It is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

“I brought my oven and noodle press (压面机) to the kitchen for two reasons. Firstly, I have some more at home, and I don’t want to leave them unused. Secondly, these can make our cooking much easier. At times, we make biscuits and they turn out to be very tasty,” said 64-year-old Guo Qiuling.

Mrs.Wang, a 70-year-old woman, has a special deep feeling for the kitchen. In her eyes, it is more than a place where she can have something to eat. “Last year, my husband died. That made me feel sad and lonely for a long time. I’m glad to have such a place to allow me to communicate with others, ” said Mrs.Wang.

The kitchen is to improve the communication among the old and help them lead a happier life.

Look for an inspirational（鼓舞人心的）story? I’m afraid nothing is greater than that of Zhang Jiwen. His story is beautiful and moving. He made the impossible possible and his work has made a difference to lots of people’s lives.

Mr.Zhang, seventy-six, comes from Chongqing. From 2012 to 2015, he built an about 1.5-kilometer-long road with the help of his wife. For the old man, it is more than a road. It’s his dream.

Mr.Zhang grew up in a village. Later he moved to Chongqing, but he never forgot about his hometown. He got the idea of building a road after he heard the news-children from a faraway village had to come down a dangerous mountain to reach their school. He paid himself.

What made the building even harder was that the old man is almost deaf. When he started working, many people thought he was crazy. However, the brave man didn’t care. His wife was his helper. She visited him in the mountain and brought him meals.

Because of Mr.Zhang and his road, children now go to school more easily. The strong-willed man didn’t stop there. He has marked over 100 dangerous mountain roads on a map, and plans to build roads as many as possible.
