A boy helped save the life of his friend from choking (噎) in the dining ball at school while having their lunch there. Many people watched the video of the accident on the Internet.

In the video, the new student Jackson just got a seat and ate his chicken sandwich. Suddenly the food stuck (卡住) in his throat and his face turned red. Hunter Olsen sat across from Jackson.

He thought that Jackson was just joking and laughed at it along with his friends.

But soon it became clear that Jackson was really choking and tried to cough the food out. He pointed to his throat to tell Hunter that he was not playing. Hunter realized that he had to do something and used the Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法). Finally, Jackson coughed the food out and could breathe again.

Ms. Howa who taught them the Heimlich maneuver during her health class, said she couldn’t believe her ears when she heard what happened. But she was over the moon to know that her student put what she taught into practice. She was so proud of Hunter.

Hunter said he wasn’t interested in Ms. Howa’s class because he thought he would never use it in his life, but her great teaching helped him know what to do when in trouble. Then he said, “I just thought that doing something was better than doing nothing.”

I grew up in New Hampshire, a small town in South Canada, where in my father’s words for the seasons were “Spring. Summer, Fairtime and Winter!” At that time, a week-long fair was held in the town every autumn. Thousands of people from other towns came to sell and buy things. It was the busiest time of the year.

When “Fairtime” came, my grandma became the most “useful” and busiest person of the family. Grandma was good at cooking. All her relatives liked the food she cooked. During “Fairtime”, they would come to live in her house and have meals there.

Grandma was always happy to look after them.

Year after year, many people moved to big cities. There was no longer “Fairtime”. Grandma became very old and was gradually going blind. We did our best to make her day-to-day life as comfortable as possible. However, she didn’t look happy. She often sat in her room for hours, without saying a word.

To attract people to move back, the Town Hall decided to reopen the fair. One day, when I came back from school. Grandma, with a big smile on her face, told me her two nieces(侄女) would come. “They said the food I cooked was very delicious and they want to stay in my house again.” Grandma said happily, “They will stay here for one week and we can have a big party. That must be the busiest week I’ve had in years!”

I suddenly realized that Grandma didn’t want to be looked after. She wanted to be “useful” and helpful.

You have lots of things you'd like to do. But sometimes it's hard to get to the finish line-just like your goal. How can you break your bad habits and develop good ones?     16     Here are a few opinions we often get from kids, followed by ideas that might help.

● I can't get away from screens.

    17     If you usually spend time lying on the sofa and watching TV programs or a video when you're bored, go somewhere else instead. Take a book to your room or your violin to the backyard. Or ask if you can help cook in the kitchen.

Start with "showing up. " Then take one small step or do one tiny task, followed by another and another. For example, how do I practice the piano? First sit at it. Then play one note at a time.

Starting with a super-simple step often helps. Why? It's easy, quick, and gets you in action.     19    

● I have no time.

Take a look at the choices you make about how you spend time. Do those choices show what's important to you? Can you spare 10 minutes a day to work on a goal? Let's suppose you want to be singer.     20     Talk with a parent about why your goal counts. Discuss whether you can let go of something less important to free up time to achieve it.
