The last Monday in March is an important day in China. It is a day for school safety education. This year, the day falls on March 28th. It helps students learn more about safety and make sure they are safe. What are some accidents at school? How can you keep yourself safe? Take a look!
The main accidents at school are stampedes (踩踏), earthquakes and fires.
A stampede always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, put your hands around your head. Move to one side, and bend (弯) your body and legs.
Earthquakes happen all over the world. When you feel everything is moving, quickly get under a desk and hold on, according to China Earthquake Administration. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines (电线).
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. This way, you won’t breathe in smoke. Many people die in a fire, not because of the fire, but smoke. It makes them cough and they can’t breathe. That’s very dangerous! So when you want to get out, you should make yourself lower to the floor. Then you can breathe some fresh air.

Happy Rain on a Spring Night Du Fu Good rain knows its time right; It will fall when comes spring. With wind it steals in night; Mute, it moistens each thing. O’er wild lanes dark cloud spreads; In boat a lantern looms (突然出现). Down sees saturated reds; The town’s heavy with blooms (开花). Translated by Xu Yuanchong |
This famous poem, with four couplets, was written by Du Fu (712—770, Tang Dynasty) when he was living and farming in Chengdu. His farming experience taught him to be thankful to nature. The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s happiness and love for the spring rain. The rain is good because it “knows” the right time to came. Here the poet uses personification (拟人), as if the rain were smart enough to come in time for the farmer’s busy season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night without making any noise. Unlike the summer storms, the spring rain finishes its task without being known.
In the third couplet, the poet describes a peaceful scene to us. In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy. It’s a sign that there will be enough rain during the night. The light from the riverboat makes the dark scene a bit livelier.
Lastly, the poet starts to imagine. Tomorrow morning, he thinks, the city of Chengdu will become beautiful when all of the flowers bloom after the rain.

Is it shi (是) or si (斯) in the sentence “Thus when Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man...” (“故天将降大任于是/斯人也”)? Most people “clearly remember” that it’s si, while the textbooks say it’s shi. Many studies have proven that “feeling certain” about a memory has nothing to do with the facts. Memories can be blurred (模糊) by belief, imagination and time.
·
In an experiment, scientists told 2 groups of college students about a man who left without paying the restaurant bill. The first group was told that he “liked to steal (偷窃)”. The second group was told that he left because be got a phone call. A week later, the first group remembered a higher bill—10 to 25 percent more than the bill actually was. The second group remembered a lower bill. This showed that how we expect or believe things to happen can distort (扭曲) our memories.
·Remembering things that never happened
In another experiment, people watched a film and were asked: “How fast was the white car going when it passed the barn?” In fact, there was no barn. But about 20% of the students said they had seen it. That’s because imagination after getting a hint (暗示) could leave a memory trace in the barn.
·Si or shi
In the case of si or shi, some people said that “si” sounds more like ancient Chinese. That’s why most people relate it to the ancient classic. On the Internet, the version (版本) of “si” is so widespread and popular that it gave people a wrong hint as time went by.
